Transcript
Johnny the painter, was big on cutting corners so he could make more of a profit. So when a church hired him to paint their wooden building, Johnny submitted the lowest bid, and was hired. As always, he thinned his latex paint with water to stretch it.
One day while he was up on the scaffolding -- the job almost finished -- he heard an oppressively loud burst of thunder, and it began raining cats and dogs.
The torrential rain washed the thinned paint off the church while intense winds blew Johnny off his scaffolding to the church graveyard, surrounded by puddles of thinned paint.
Johnny interpreted this as a warning from God above, so he got on his knees and cried: “Oh, God! Please forgive me! What should I do?”
God’s voice thundered from heaven: “Repaint and thin no more!”
You don’t have to have fallen in sin to have experienced brokenness by the way. Just take a look at Job.
Job’s suffering wasn’t because of his sin
Job was a rich landowner and live stock owner
he then lost his possessions - then all his kids - and lost his health - all within a couple of days
on top of that his friends spoke wrong of him and the situation
Suffered for about 9 months
Sometimes suffering shapes us for special service to others
Sometimes it is an attack by Satan on our lives
Sometimes we don’t know why we suffer
At those times are we willing to trust God in spite of unanswered questions?

I pray that my will bends to your will - potter and the clay - that His hands are molding me into the person that He would have me be.
Review of Davids sin....
If there_ is no repentance, there can be no pardon.
Some years ago a murderer was sentenced to death in the United States.
The murderer's brother, to whom the State was deeply indebted for former services, besought the governor of the State for his brother's pardon.
The pardon was granted, and the man visited his brother with the pardon in his pocket. "What would you do," he said to him, "if you received a pardon?" "The first thing I would do," he answered, "is to track down the judge who sentenced me, and murder him ; and the next thing I would do is to track down the chief witness, and murder him."
The brother rose, and left the prison with the pardon in his pocket
5 Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me.
Brokenness causes us to hate sin and our fleshly nature. I disgust in what I’m capable of doing in my sinful nature. This helps create a bearer of repeated sin in my life.
The Apostle Paul had the same kind of disgust.
18 For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh; for the willing is present in me, but the doing of the good is not.
This came up out of my spirit the other day that in order to fully realize who we are in Christ we must first understand who we are in Adam and the sinful nature that has befallen all of us.
13 Whoever conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will obtain mercy.
6 Behold, You desire truth in the inward parts, And in the hidden part You will make me to know wisdom.
Truth in the inward part helps us from living life as a hypocrite. Not just giving lip service to the Word of God.
I would say that most don’t live with truth on the inside and act a different way on the outside. Or when someone has a genuine heart and most of the time acts in genuine. Usually its the other way around.
Fresh appreciation of the wisdom of God. There will be a hunger for it. Brokenness will cause a hunger for the Word.
“God I want to hear from you!” Sometimes it takes a adverse circumstance to enter our life to brake us and we come back to the Word of God that we have neglected.
7 Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
8 Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones that you have broken rejoice.
Repentance brings joy and gladness back into our lives. It brings a refreshing.
19 “Therefore repent and return, so that your sins may be wiped away, in order that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord;
20 and that He may send Jesus, the Christ appointed for you,
He talking about the joy and gladness of being right with God. Not being king of Isreal or having wealth. David had all the power and money he could ever want but it wouldn’t compare to being right with God. That’s the greatest blessing. For about a year of his life he had all these things but didn’t have joy and gladness due to unbrokenness and unrepentant.
Sometimes we loose sight of whats valuable. We let the deceitfulness of riches, pride of life, the lust , cares enter in. We think awe thats were the gladness and joy is found.
However God brakes us and brings us back to the place of what true riches are. What really matters in life. To begin the day, go through my day, and end my day with the knowledge that I’m right with you.
9 Hide your face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities.
Brokenness brings a sanctified regret for sin. “I’m ashamed that you know this about me.” In our culture we try to protect people from the shame of their wrong actions and decisions. No one must never be ashamed or ever feel that emotion. However when I’ve done something that is shameful that I should feel those feelings in a Godly way. And it can be helpful in building a barrier between me and ever doing in what I was ashamed of.
Not get into beating yourself up or depression. Its not condemnation. Its that healthy “Lord I never want to find myself in this place again - I never want to do this again - I’m so ashamed and I never want to feel this way again in my life” Its called a healthy regret of our sin. And in God’s hands it healthy.
10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.
David is saying give me a new attitude, a new motivation, and help me become a new person in this area that I have fallen. Brokenness says “ I never want to be like that again please change me.” Not just the outward action but the intentions and motivations of the heart.
11 Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me.
Brokenness and repentance allows us to once again treasure the presence and anointing of the Holy Spirit.
Sampson is a great of example of the anointing of the Holy Spirit being taken from him.
Sampson was a judge with a tremendous anointing of the Spirit. He tore a lion apart with his bear hands. One time slayed 30 men. Another time another time took the jawbone of a donkey and killed 1000 men with it.
We all know what happened. He went after Delilah who was forbidden for him to do. She asked Sampson the source of his strength and kept asking until he gave up his secret.
As soon as Sampson sinned with Delilah by Sampson acting in betrayal towards God he lost his anointing.
Had his eyes poked out and ended up as a slave.
12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit.
Lost his joy for a year and then brokenness brought it back.
13 Then I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners will return to you.
Brokenness brings a fresh appreciation to serve the Lord and preach the Gospel and repentance.
Brings a concern for others and their spiritual state.
14 Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, O God of my salvation, and my tongue will sing aloud of your righteousness.
15 O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare your praise.
Brings a spirit of praise and worship. How precious is praise and worship from a place of brokenness. People get accustom and familiar to it. We get familiar in a unhealthy way to Jesus and His church.
