Antiochus Mirrored But Worse

Antiochus Epiphanes is important, but mostly as a historical preview of the Antichrist. This is why so much space is given to describing the career of one evil man — because he prefigures the ultimate evil man. Antiochus Epiphanes is the “trailer” released well before the Antichrist, who is like the “feature.”
Daniel 11:36 ESV
36 “And the king shall do as he wills. He shall exalt himself and magnify himself above every god, and shall speak astonishing things against the God of gods. He shall prosper till the indignation is accomplished; for what is decreed shall be done.
Here we shift from what was fulfilled in the Ptolemies and the Seleucids to what will be fulfilled in the Antichrist, the final world dictator. Remember, Daniel was told that this revelation pertained to the latter days (Daniel 10:14), and this verse begins to look more towards this final world dictator.
We know that everything about this prophecy was not fulfilled in the person of Antiochus Epiphanes. Jesus said the real abomination of desolation was still in the future Matthew 24:15
Matthew 24:15 ESV
15 “So when you see the abomination of desolation spoken of by the prophet Daniel, standing in the holy place (let the reader understand),
The Apostle Paul paraphrased Daniel 11:36 in reference to the coming Antichrist: Let no one deceive you by any means; for that Day will not come unless the falling away comes first, and the man of sin is revealed, the son of perdition, who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God or that is worshiped, so that he sits as God in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God (2 Thessalonians 2:3-4).
2 Thessalonians 2:3–4 ESV
3 Let no one deceive you in any way. For that day will not come, unless the rebellion comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction, 4 who opposes and exalts himself against every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, proclaiming himself to be God.
Even though Antiochus Epiphanes set up a statue of Zeus in the Temple in Jerusalem and sacrificed a pig on the altar, spreading it’s blood and other fluids all over, the Antichrist will set up an image of himself and demand it be worshiped. This fulfills this prophecy more fully as “he takes his seat in the temple of God, proclaiming himself to be God.”
Ultimately the AntiChrist will do a lot of damage and harm but in the end, he will still be on a short leash and will fulfill God’s will and purpose.
Daniel 11:37–39 ESV
37 He shall pay no attention to the gods of his fathers, or to the one beloved by women. He shall not pay attention to any other god, for he shall magnify himself above all. 38 He shall honor the god of fortresses instead of these. A god whom his fathers did not know he shall honor with gold and silver, with precious stones and costly gifts. 39 He shall deal with the strongest fortresses with the help of a foreign god. Those who acknowledge him he shall load with honor. He shall make them rulers over many and shall divide the land for a price.
