Q52 What does every sin deserve? A52 Every sin deserves God’s wrath and curse, both in this life and that which is to come (Ga 3:13)
Interaction: Why would anyone want to be cursed? Hold on… what is a curse? WISHING OF DIVINE ILL INTENT ON ANOTHER - NOT BLASPHEMY
Why would anyone want themselves to be harmed by God?
Why would Moses say to God? “Please blot me out of Your book!”
Exodus 32:30–33 “Now it happened on the next day, that Moses said to the people, “You yourselves have committed a great sin; but now I am going up to Yahweh, perhaps I can make atonement for your sin.” Then Moses returned to Yahweh and said, “Alas, this people has committed a great sin, and they have made gods of gold for themselves. “But now, if You will forgive their sin—but if not, please blot me out from Your book which You have written!” And Yahweh said to Moses, “Whoever has sinned against Me, I will blot him out of My book.”
Why would Paul say to Christians, “I wish I were accursed”
Romans 9:1–5 “I am telling the truth in Christ, I am not lying, my conscience testifies with me in the Holy Spirit, that I have great sorrow and unceasing grief in my heart. For I could wish that I myself were accursed, separated from Christ for the sake of my brothers, my kinsmen according to the flesh, who are Israelites, to whom belongs the adoption as sons, and the glory and the covenants and the giving of the Law and the temple service and the promises, whose are the fathers, and from whom is the Christ according to the flesh, who is God over all, blessed forever. Amen.”
Transition to Theological Concept So why would anyone want to be cursed by God? So that others would not be cursed by God.
Who else actually was cursed by God? JESUS - Where does the Bible say that?
Question and Answer: So here is tonight’s question: Q52 What does every sin deserve? A52 Every sin deserves God’s wrath and curse, both in this life and that which is to come (Galatians 3:13“Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”—” )
Restate: Because we are sinners, do we all agree that we all are sinners… we are under the curse of God’s wrath. The curse with an eternal penalty. That is some hard news. So how do people get saved - someone, someone perfect had to take our curse for us.
Questions? Who has a question?
Repeat Q52 What does every sin deserve? A52 Every sin deserves God’s wrath and curse, both in this life and that which is to come (Galatians 3:13“Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”—” )
Why does this matter?
That curse didn’t just go away - God punished Himself, God cursed Himself so that His creation could be set free from the penalty our sins earned.
God saved us from Himself by becoming cursed
God is so good so kind that He didn’t simply overlook our sin but utterly and entirely and completely paid for all sins by pouring out His wrath against sin upon Himself
So how should this lesson change us?
It should make us want to know the God that would do this for us.
It should make us treasure the God that would come to set us free from sin
Knowing this should make us want to share what God has done for those that are still under the curse of God’s wrath

Definitions and Examples for Key Terms
Wrath Definition: God’s holy and just anger directed against sin and evil. Example: Like a judge sentencing a criminal, God’s wrath is His righteous judgment against all wrongdoing. Here is a riddle, when is good news not good news? LET THEM ANSWER AND PERHAPS WRITE THEIR ANSWERS ON THE BOARD
Riddle answer: Good news is not good news when the good news is not for you. If your job announces raises for folks and you find out that you didn’t get a raise but everyone else did that is good news… just not for you. If the teacher announces to the class… Good news! The test results were really good but when you get your test back you find out you failed. It was good for everyone that did well but that news did not include you. Do you have a similar experience?
Transition to Theological Concept So has anyone heard of Jonah? Tell me about Jonah LET THEM RELAY THE STORY OF JONAH - THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT THEY REPENTED OF SIN AND WERE SAVED FROM JUDGMENT. TIE IN FUTURE JUDGMENT ON NINEVEH IN NAHUM.
Nahum 1:15“Behold, on the mountains the feet of him who proclaims good news, Who announces peace! Celebrate your feasts, O Judah; Pay your vows. For never again will the vile one pass through you; He is cut off completely.”
You see Nineveh after Jonah they turned back against God. They heard the announcement of good news but it wasn’t for them. It was for Judah, Nineveh’s enemy! When is good news not good news? When it is not for you.
