We can love the world, or love God. If we love the world, there will be no room in our heart for the love of God. We cannot love both God, who is eternal, and the world, which is transitory.
Saint Augustine of Hippo
The Bible tells us to love our neighbors and also to love our enemies—probably because they are generally the same people.
—G. K. Chesterton
Gilbert Keith Chesterton (Poet and Essayist)

Love of God is the root, love of our neighbor the fruit of the Tree of Life. Neither can exist without the other, but the one is cause and the other effect.
William Temple (bishop)
The love of our neighbor is the only door out of the dungeon of self.
George Macdonald (Scottish Novelist and Poet)
