Read Text
Matthew 14:22–33 “Immediately he made the disciples get into the boat and go ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. After dismissing the crowds, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. Well into the night, he was there alone. Meanwhile, the boat was already some distance from land, battered by the waves, because the wind was against them. Jesus came toward them walking on the sea very early in the morning. When the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost!” they said, and they cried out in fear. Immediately Jesus spoke to them. “Have courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter answered him, “command me to come to you on the water.” He said, “Come.” And climbing out of the boat, Peter started walking on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the strength of the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus reached out his hand, caught hold of him, and said to him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?” When they got into the boat, the wind ceased. Then those in the boat worshiped him and said, “Truly you are the Son of God.””
Someone recap what I just read.
What do you think the main idea of this passage is? Fix your eyes on Jesus.
3. In your own words what does it mean to fix your eyes on Jesus?
4. How do you fix your eyes on Jesus?
(in the passage we see three ways, by keeping your focus on Jesus, keeping your faith in Jesus, and keeping your praise on Jesus)
Read Matthew 14:25–27 “Jesus came toward them walking on the sea very early in the morning. When the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost!” they said, and they cried out in fear. Immediately Jesus spoke to them. “Have courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.””
1. What problems are the disciples facing in this passage ?
2. Why is it important that the disciples focus on Jesus in this situation?
3. Why do we tend to struggle with Focusing on Jesus? What does this reveal about our hearts?
4. Why is it important to focus on Jesus in the midst of our difficult circumstances?
Read Matthew 14:28–31 ““Lord, if it’s you,” Peter answered him, “command me to come to you on the water.” He said, “Come.” And climbing out of the boat, Peter started walking on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the strength of the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus reached out his hand, caught hold of him, and said to him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?”
What is Faith?
What role does Faith play in our spiritual growth?
3. In Matthew 8, Jesus had already calmed a storm in front of peter, so peter knew that Jesus had authority over the wind and the waves, yet he still doubted, what does this reveal about peter?
4. Why do we doubt God in situations even when we know intellectually that he is all powerful?
5. How does the Gospel drive out doubt?
Read Matthew 14:32–33 “When they got into the boat, the wind ceased. Then those in the boat worshiped him and said, “Truly you are the Son of God.””
What is worship?
What is the significance of worship?
