Let me ask you a question this morning:
What has Jesus done for you?
Just share one thing Jesus has done for you. Isn’t it amazing to think about all of the things Jesus has done for you? Jesus has done all sorts of things for me. Just to name one, and it’s the one we all have in common, Jesus saved me from my sin and has given me eternal life through His death and resurrection. Anything I get after that is because Jesus is extra nice.
Some of you in the room may be thinking to yourself, “well Pastor Luis, I can’t think of one thing Jesus has done for me.” You might think Jesus has not done anything for you. I want to share with you this morning that Jesus has a lot of gift for you. The Bible says this about Jesus:
45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Jesus has come to serve us, and today we are going to see 2 things Jesus wants to do for you and other people. Before we read our passage for today:
Why was the book of Mark written?
To prove that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, who suffered, died, and rose again as Lord.
What is Jesus’ plan?
His plan is to save the world from its sin with His death and resurrection.
29 As soon as they left the synagogue, they went with James and John to the home of Simon and Andrew.
30 Simon’s mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they immediately told Jesus about her.
31 So he went to her, took her hand and helped her up. The fever left her and she began to wait on them.
32 That evening after sunset the people brought to Jesus all the sick and demon-possessed.
33 The whole town gathered at the door,
34 and Jesus healed many who had various diseases. He also drove out many demons, but he would not let the demons speak because they knew who he was.
So as we read this, it kind of answers our question. What’s our question again?
What does Jesus do for people?
Jesus does a lot for people but one of the things He wants to do for people is: He wants to heal people.
29 As soon as they left the synagogue, they went with James and John to the home of Simon and Andrew.
30 Simon’s mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they immediately told Jesus about her.
31 So he went to her, took her hand and helped her up. The fever left her and she began to wait on them.
So Jesus get together with his disciples, and Simon’s, or Peter’s, mother in law was sick. The Bible tells us she was in bed with a fever. Have you ever had a fever so bad that you couldn’t get out of bed? Those are the kind of headaches that make you want to cry.
Peter’s mother in law was so sick that she couldn’t get out of bed and the disciples tell Jesus about her. Have you ever gone to someone and you told them about your problems, but you’re not looking for them to help you with you problem you just want them to listen?
That’s how I imagine the disciples told Jesus about Peter’s mother in law. “Hey Jesus come on in, my mother in law wanted to come and greet you but she can’t because she is feeling sick”
The Bible does not tell us that Petter asked for help, The Bible says all he did was tell Jesus about his problems. But Jesus doesn’t just sit back, What does the next verse say?
31 So he went to her, took her hand and helped her up. The fever left her and she began to wait on them.
Jesus goes to find her, He takes her hand, and he helps her up. Guys, this isn’t magic. Jesus doesn’t have to cast a spell or pray that God will heal her, you know why?
Because Jesus is God. Jesus walks into the room and He helps her up like she wasn’t even sick in the first place. You know what’s crazy about all of this to me?
That Jesus goes out of His way. Jesus did not have to heal this lady, but it was one of the first things He did when He met her. Why does He do that?
Because we have a God that is intentionally involved in our lives.
God is not distant, and He is not unreachable. God is an arms length away and if you would just reach out to Him, He will reach out to you. The Bible says this about God’s character:
8 Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
If you would reach out to God, God will extend His hand to show you true love and healing.
And when God heals you, it’s like you’ve never been sick. Now, as we read this and we see this amazing miracle that Jesus performed you might be thinking to yourself, God will heal me of my sickness. And He can, But that doesn’t mean He always will.
Some of you may be sick, some of you may know someone you love is in the hospital. And if you are in a place in which you feel like you or someone you know can’t be helped by a doctor then you should reach out to God. You should reach out to God all of them time. But I also want to be honest with you. God may heal you or your loved one but God also might not.
I don’t want to stand up here and pretend like God will always say yes to the things we ask Him. But I promise that if you reach out to Jesus, He will respond. I promise that if you reach out to Him, He will understand. I promise that if you reach out to God, He will feel what you are feeling.
God may heal you or someone you know and if He does, Give Him the glory. But if He doesn’t God still deserves the glory do you know why? Because in the same way that God healed this woman physically, God can, and if you give Him the chance, He will heal you spiritually.
What does that mean? It means that God will take your sins off your back and make so like you never sinned against Him at all.
I don’t think we realize it, but sin carries a weight that you don’t think about until you are carrying it. Sin brings its own set of consequences and one of those consequences is eternal separation from God. Jesus comes out of His way to heal that, to take that away so that we don’t have to worry about that specific consequence.
Jesus comes into our lives, he takes our hand, and he wipes our sin away and if we hold on to His hand, He will raise us up. But I want you to pay close attention to what happens right after he picks us up:
31 So he went to her, took her hand and helped her up. The fever left her and she began to wait on them.
It says the fever left her and she began to what?
It all depends on which version of scripture you use, but they all mean the same thing. The NIV says she began to wait on them.
KJV - Began to minister to them.
ESV - she began to serve them.
When Jesus comes into your life and He takes away your sin, He doesn’t do it so that you and I will go back to it, He doesn’t do it so that we can now be defeated by it, He doesn’t do it so we can lay back down and be bed ridden by our sin, Jesus takes our sin away so that we can be free from sin. And now that you and I are free, we are free to serve Jesus.
Let me ask you a question, if you are saved, how are you serving Jesus? Many of us might be thinking, I want to serve but I don’t know how. We can talk about that, we have a few different way we can plug you into service here at church. But what more important that what you do, is who you serve. Please remember that Jesus heals us from our sin so that we can be free from it.
What does Jesus do for people?
He heals them. But that is not all he does. He delivers people from satan.

32 That evening after sunset the people brought to Jesus all the sick and demon-possessed.

34 and Jesus healed many who had various diseases. He also drove out many demons, but he would not let the demons speak because they knew who he was.
That same day all of these people heard what Jesus had done, so all of these people gathered at the door and some people were physically sick and so many of them were spiritually sick. And while these people gathered at that door, Jesus began to heal these people.
How many of you guys in here know someone who is sick or knows someone who has been sick? Is every person you know in the hospital? No, because although you and I know people that are sick, we also know a lot of people that are physically healthy. Right?
There is something we all have in common though:
1 As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins,
2 in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient.
3 All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath.
At some point, before Jesus, we were all spiritually sick.
If you have a headache what do yo do? You take tylenol. If you have stomach problems you turn to pepto, if you have heard burn get you some thumbs, and if you need surgery then go see your doctor. But if you are like
1 As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins,
Dead in sins, then the only one who can help you with that sickness is Jesus. You and I can’t just head into the pharmacy and get something for my sins because it doesn’t exist out there. The only medication for my sin is the blood of Jesus. The only fix you and I can get for our transgressions is to be in right relationship with the Son of Man who is Jesus.
While Jesus may not always heal us from our physical sickness and disease, if you ask Him to He will always forgive you of your sins.
So why does Jesus heal people from their physical sickness sometimes? To prove to you and I that He is the Messiah. And if Jesus, who is God, can heal people physically, then you can know for certain that He can heal people spiritually.
Something that stick out to me in this story is the last verse we read:
34 and Jesus healed many who had various diseases. He also drove out many demons, but he would not let the demons speak because they knew who he was.
Jesus wouldn’t let the demons speak. And I wonder why sometimes? It feels like Jesus is trying to hide that He is the Messiah but that’s not what’s happening here.
People would come to Jesus so that He could heal them or so that Jesus could feed them and while Jesus did heal some people and He did feed some people that was not His primary objective. Some people worshiped and loved Jesus like you and I do today. But many people treated Jesus like a free healthcare clinic or like the local magician that could take away all of our physical problems.
Do you guys remember Jesus’ plan? We talked a little bit about it at the beginning:
His plan is to save the world from its sin with His death and resurrection.
Jesus’ main objective isn’t to heal us physically, although He might do that as well, His primary goal is to save us from our sin so that we can be in right relationship with Hi, someday. I mentioned earlier that sin carries a big weight and we don’t even think about it until we carry it.
Guys, the biggest weight to our sin is that it separates us from a good and perfect, holy God. And that God loves you and wants to be in right relationship with you. If you feel like you are your wits end, if you feel alone, if you feel like there is no way out, then reach out to Jesus. We should be like these people that gathered at His door and asked for help.
