Isaiah 63:1-6
The Lord’s Day Of Vengeance
Who is this who comes from Edom,
in crimsoned garments from Bozrah,
he who is splendid in his apparel,
marching in the greatness of his strength?
“It is I, speaking in righteousness,
mighty to save.”
2 Why is your apparel red,
and your garments like his who treads in the winepress?
3 “I have trodden the winepress alone,
and from the peoples no one was with me;
I trod them in my anger
and trampled them in my wrath;
their lifeblood[a] spattered on my garments,
and stained all my apparel.
4 For the day of vengeance was in my heart,
and my year of redemption[b] had come.
5 I looked, but there was no one to help;
I was appalled, but there was no one to uphold;
so my own arm brought me salvation,
and my wrath upheld me.
6 I trampled down the peoples in my anger;
I made them drunk in my wrath,
and I poured out their lifeblood on the earth.”
[Prayer for the Lord to speak & get me out of the way]

Conversation between a prophet and the Lord
[Introduction]
“1 Who is this who comes from Edom,”
The Author first asks a question, Who is it? That Comes from Edom?
[Background Of Edom]
Edom is a nation neighboring Israel, which came from the descendants of Esau.
Esau is Isaacs's son and Jacobs's brother.
[Two Nations Fighting:]
Gen 25:23 “Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples from within you shall be divided; the one shall be stronger than the other, the older shall serve the younger.”
Remember, Esau despised God's gift of his birthright and sold it to his brother Jacob (Gen 25:34 B) Tried to kill Jacob then Esau rebelled against God’s covenant with Abraham, by marrying two Hittite Women.
^That is important^
God Changes Jacobs's name to Israel (In form, he also is representing Israel)
And we see Esau representing Edom in:
Gen 25:30 30 He said to Jacob, “Quick, let me have some of that red stew! I’m famished!” (That is why he was also called Edom.)
-The word Edom means “red” and Esau was born “red all over”
The Battle Between the Two Brothers also represents the battles of these two nations, Israel and Edom which are paralleled as Gods Chosen people, and the counterpart (Edom)
Genesis 33:4: We know that Esau and Jacob Reconciled.
Deuteronomy 23:7 A “ 7 Do not despise an Edomite, for the Edomites are related to you. “
However, they refused the Israelites’ request to pass through their land during the Exodus from Egypt (Num 20:14–29)
After this, We don't see the Edomites and the Israelites bonding, as we see David destroy them and make them their servants, recounted in 1 Chronicle 18:13
Also Saul, Soloman all battled against Edom (1 Sam 14:47; 1 Kgs 11:14)
It is clear throughout scripture that Edom is an enemy of Israel
God even addresses Edom in Ezekial 25:13
13 “ therefore thus says the Lord GOD, I will stretch out my hand against Edom and cut off from it man and beast. And I will make it desolate; “
SO, in this first line, “1 Who is this who comes from Edom,”
We know that this “WHO” is coming out of the nation of their enemies
[Read]
“ in crimsoned garments from Bozrah,”
-Hebrew: Hames - Crimsoned or “Wine-Stained/Blood Stained”
-Describing a battle scene
What is Bozrah?
-Capital City of Edom
-It’s name means grape gathering
Further Emphasis: This “Who” is coming out of Edom, Which is enemy territory, from the capital city, with wine-stained clothes.
[Read]
“ he who is splendid in his apparel,
marching in the greatness of his strength?
“It is I, speaking in righteousness,
mighty to save.””
The Hebrew meaning for Splendid- To Honour and or Glorify in this context
The Original audience still did not know who this warrior was.
We know:
The “Mighty To Save” Points us to Matthew 1:21
An Angel says to Mary “You Shall Call Him Jesus, for He will save His people from their sin”
The “Who” is referenced as the Messiah, and we know that is Jesus!
We see this picture of a great battle and victory from the Lord,
[Edom Represented as Lords Enemies]
What is this victory from? Oppression? Invasion?
-We know the Edomites invaded Judah and did not aid them during the Babylonian exile, so it is not that
-Verse 4 Points us to the answer. “For the day of vengeance was in my heart,”
- The Day of Vengeance is not just for the Edomites, Isaiah 34:8 says
“For the LORD has a day of vengeance,
a time of paying back Edom
for its hostility against Zion,”
However, Edom is used metaphorically here as a representation of all of Gods enemies and Zion is used as a term for all of Gods Kingdom and believers. Referenced from Deut 32:35, & Hebrews 12:18-29
The victory is from all of God's enemies, in the future judgement of the entire World.
[Re-Read]
Who is this who comes from Edom,
in crimsoned garments from Bozrah,
he who is splendid in his apparel,
marching in the greatness of his strength?
“It is I, speaking in righteousness,
mighty to save.”
Point 1: There is tension between God’s wrath and vengeance of His enemies that exists at the same time as being Mighty To Save
Application:
Our view of God should not be undermined by His abundance of grace and mercy, but in His coming Judgement and wrath as well.
He is described as glorious, mighty, righteous, great in strength, because of the wrath poured out.
There is real judgment still to come.
[Transition]
2 “Why is your apparel red,
and your garments like his who treads in the winepress?
The Prophet questions his blood-stained clothing
Winepress
-Literal Version (What the prophet compares it to)
Rectangle Box dug into the earth
Grapes Layed & Crushed with feet
Juice from Grapes stained workers clothes
3 “I have trodden the winepress alone,
and from the peoples no one was with me;
I trod them in my anger
and trampled them in my wrath;
their lifeblood spattered on my garments,
and stained all my apparel.”
-The word trodded is used as “dealt out” Gods wrath.
-What the Lord is talking about
Revelation 14:19 “The angel swung his sickle on the earth, gathered its grapes and threw them into the great winepress of God’s wrath.
-The winepress is represented as God’s wrath.
-The blood-stained clothes are the very lifeblood of God's enemies.
-Vivid imagery of what judgment will look like
This is heavy. The Lord will do this, and we know there was no Man with him, only Jesus who is dealing out this wrath.
Why is this righteous, why is this okay?
In order for God to be truly just, he must hold a standard of perfect Justice
-Because we have sinned, we have disobeyed the Lord.
-From this passage we know that We could not, and cannot escape the sin that we have committed because The consequence for sin is death - Romans 6:23
The Lord is Holy, Holy, Holy. Righteous, Mighty, and Just and He has no faults.
If He is truly just, then He must serve Justice.
Here's our dilemma. We want God to punish all of the evil, sickness, death, hurt, and sin. But we are sinful. That is the problem
4 “ For the day of vengeance was in my heart,
and my year of redemption had come. “
The day of judgment that we want for sin is going to come. And we want to experience the year of redemption. However, we deserve the day of vengeance!
So what do we do?
The only way to salvation is through Christ.
Romans 5: 8-10
8 “ but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. 10 For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life.”
The Lord, knowing that there will be none worthy enough to escape the day of Vengeance, sent His only son, in the form of God, to take the punishment for us.
Referenced from (Philippians 2:5-8)
He has given the free gift of salvation in Christ Jesus death and Resurrection.
We see what will happen to those who do not accept the free gift of salvation
“5 I looked, but there was no one to help;
I was appalled, but there was no one to uphold;
so my own arm brought me salvation,
and my wrath upheld me.
6 I trampled down the peoples in my anger;
I made them drunk in my wrath,
and I poured out their lifeblood on the earth.”
The Lord has promised this fulfillment.
Main Application:
Today is the day for salvation
Notice no time, or date in this promise. Any moment
How do I accept salvation?
Romans 10:9
because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
Repentance
Repent means to 180, Turn away
Turn away from your sins
Faith in Jesus
Access to the Holy Spirit to be set apart, and have a relationship with Christ
“And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the great and first commandment. 39 And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
The Lord has an appointed time when he will return, in Glory and Strength, in bringing his full wrath and judgment on His enemies. However, the Lord is gracious enough to be mighty to save us, even though we are unworthy. So we one day, we can spend the year of redemption with Him
Lets Pray
Ge 25:22–23.
The children struggled together within her, and she said, “If it is thus, why is this happening to me?” So she went to inquire of the LORD. 23 And the LORD said to her,
“Two nations are in your womb,
and two peoples from within you shall be divided;
the one shall be stronger than the other,
the older shall serve the younger.”
Revelation 19:13

in the north country by the river Euphrates.

all my mighty men in my midst;
he summoned an assembly against me
to crush my young men;
the Lord has trodden as in a winepress
the virgin daughter of Judah.
