Don't Give Up: The Power of Perseverance

Bible Passage: Galatians 6:9

Summary: In Galatians 6:9, Paul encourages believers not to become weary in doing good, promising that they will reap a harvest if they do not give up. This call highlights the importance of steadfastness in faith and good deeds amidst challenges.
Application: This passage helps Christians and others understand that perseverance in faith and good works is crucial, especially when faced with hardships or moments of doubt. It reassures them that their efforts will bear fruit in due time, encouraging them to remain committed and hopeful.
Teaching: This sermon teaches that perseverance is not just about enduring difficulties but also involves actively doing good and maintaining faith despite circumstances. It underscores the importance of spiritual endurance and its ultimate reward.
How this passage could point to Christ: This theme emphasizes that Christ is our ultimate example of perseverance. He endured the cross for the joy set before Him (Hebrews 12:2), which encourages believers to keep their eyes on Him as they strive to persevere in their own lives.
Big Idea: Perseverance in doing good is essential for Christians, as it leads to eventual blessings and fulfillment of God's promises.
Recommended Study: As you prepare this sermon, consider diving into the context of Galatians to understand Paul's argument about freedom and responsibility. Explore how perseverance is portrayed throughout scripture, perhaps using Logos to examine cross-references that discuss suffering and endurance, such as James 1:12 and Romans 5:3-5. Investigating certain lexical choices in the original Greek may help deepen your insights into the significance of 'weary' and 'reap' in this context.

1. Persist Through Weariness

Galatians 6:9a
You could begin by emphasizing the exhortation from Paul to not become weary in doing good. Highlight how perseverance is necessary when facing trials and resisting the temptation to give up on righteous living. This part of the passage suggests that believers are encouraged by the Apostle to maintain their efforts in kindness and faith, trusting that their work is not in vain. Link this to Christ's perseverance during His earthly ministry and His ongoing intercession for us.

2. Promise of the Harvest

Galatians 6:9b
Perhaps focus on the promise of reaping a harvest if we do not give up. This assurance provides hope and encourages endurance by reassuring believers that their perseverance has a purpose and will yield results. Connect this to the life of Jesus, who persevered for the joy set before Him. This part of the passage can remind the congregation that God rewards perseverance and faithfulness, affirming that enduring trials is an integral part of the Christian journey.
Consider the story of Job, a man who faced unimaginable loss and suffering yet remained steadfast in his faith. Despite his friends urging him to abandon hope, Job declared, 'Though He slay me, yet will I trust in Him' (Job 13:15). Job's perseverance through pain is a testament to God’s faithfulness, and his story reassures us that even in the darkest times, holding onto our faith in Christ is worth it.
Paul writing in his letter, presents a theme that we all can shout about. Paul proclaims to his readers that there is freedom in Christ! We are free from the chains of the law! We are free from the power of sin, and we are free to live in and serve our Savior!!!
And in Christ, we are free to share one another’s burdens and love one another! Despite what’s going on in the world, because of Christ, all of this is possible! Here in Galatians 6:9 is a word of encouragement that I believe we can all use today! Because I think that the situations going on in the world might be making some people doubt! We’ve had a rough year or more where we’ve witnessed news clips regarding the senseless killing of our Black men and boys! We’ve witnessed acts of terrorism here and abroad! And even now, the fate of our government and hangs in the balance because the Republicans were so bent to oppose Obama, they didn’t see the fox sneaking into the henhouse! I don’t know about you, but I’ve asked God on more than one occasion, if He was still with us!!! Amen?
This is real and we must remember that God was before anything in this world! God is our creator, believer and non-believer alike! He is the author of the world, and amazingly knew every twist and turn that each and every one of us would make! He knows who would be saved and who would reject Him! So, even though these events; these horrific and hurtful events have occurred in the world, we should have an expectation that something like this would occur.
Reflect on the life of Joseph, who faced betrayal, slavery, and imprisonment, yet never lost faith in God. His journey from the pit to the palace was fraught with challenges, but he persevered, trusting God’s plan. In Genesis 50:20, he reveals that what was meant for harm, God used for good. Just as Joseph's steadfastness led to salvation for many, our perseverance in Christ brings hope not only to us but to those around us.
Galatians 6 opens and tries to tell us that we ought to make doing good and living right a priority. Verse one lets us know that as believers that if our brother or sister is caught up in sin and we know about it as spirit-filled believers, we ought to be able to restore-to forgive them gently; but be careful not to go and sin with them! Amen?
And Paul tells us part of doing good also means that carry one another’s burdens; not just to bless others, but also to be all we are called to be in Christ Jesus!
We have free choice, right? And not everyone will choose to believe in Christ or live a life outlined in God’s Word! And one of the reasons God gave His only Son for our sins, is so that His righteous judgment could be carried out, because His Son covered them for us! However, it says in verse 7 that God is not mocked! A man reaps what he sows!!!!
And that means that there is still so much sin in the world! Evil can beget good! Selfishness cannot beget selflessness! We have to understand that actions have consequences, and until the people in power positions get right with God, we are going to have to expect that these horrible things will continue to happen! Because the world has been about the flesh and not of the Spirit and consequences are bound to occur! It may sound harsh, but it is so true! This is enough to make ANYONE get weary!
So here’s where we can get our shout on, because our text for this afternoon lets us know that our walk in Christ will not be in vain!!!
For those of you, like myself take their Christian walk seriously, we know it’s not easy to choose the narrow gate, because the world makes the wide gate look so much more appealing! I know I’m not the only one who wants to just do what you want to do! I know that sometimes, you want to pretend that still, small voice isn’t convicting you when you are trying to do that thing, you know the Word says we shouldn’t be doing!
It’s not easy to continue to live right and be kind, and not get a word of thanks. It’s not easy to walk the straight and narrow and see the wicked prosper!
We live the struggle; yet, we are called to deny ourselves daily, pick up the cross, and follow Jesus! But Paul is telling us not to get weary in well doing! We cannot give up in living our lives for Christ because Christ didn’t give up on us! When we were yet sinners, Christ died for the ungodly! We can’t give up in living for Christ, because if it had not been the Lord on our side, where would we be!!!
We cannot get discouraged in doing the work!!! Each and every one of us has a calling on our lives!!! Christ reconciled us to God and has given us the ministry of reconciliation. 2 Cor. 5:20 tells us, “Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making His appeal through us.” We are called to ask others on behalf of Christ, to be reconciled to God! SO THERE IS NO ROOM TO GET WEARY!!
There is a lot of work to do!!!! For every one that we know who’s saved, there are 20 others who aren’t. We can’t get weary, church; we can’t get comfortable in our salvation!!!! We just can’t lounge around in the pew! And for certain we cannot give up!!!
We cannot get weary in well doing! Why, because the bible says that in due season we will reap if we faint not!
What does that mean? What is the due season that we ought to hold out for? We are talking about God’s timing! This thought of ‘kairos’ the Greek word meaning ‘the appointed time’—God’s appointed time is a blessing but can be a point of frustration for us! It’s a blessing because anything we receive from God is a blessing! Even our every breath is a blessing! So, we can trust that if God has an appointed time; a due season, we can trust that we will reap a harvest of blessings!
Can I tell you that my timing most times is SO off!!! I think I’m doing the right thing at the right time, and things tend to not go well for me! God’s ways are not my ways! He knows just the day, just the right time and just the right place for us to be blessed!!!!
Yet, this same Kairos time; this due season can be frustrating when we work, and work and we try to stay positive and prayerful and it seems like nothing is changing!
But this is where our trust and faith in the one who is able to do exceeding and abundantly more than we can ever ask or imagine according to the power of the Holy Spirit at work within us!!! Which means that the blessing is in not giving up!!!
We have to believe that God will do what He said He will do in His word! God has promised us a future and a hope! But you can’t get weary in the work God’s laid out for us!
Jesus, said, work while it is still day, for when night comes, no one can work! So, don’t get weary! Because in due season, we will indeed reap the harvest!!!
There was a time last year when I felt like it was all too much! I just loss Mom and passed over for a promotion at work! No one knew how lost I felt, no one knew how much I really wanted to give up! But God sent a fresh word to me, and He told me don’t get weary! Because in due season! He has a harvest for me, unlike one I’ve ever seen before!
I’M HERE TO ENCOURAGE YOU TODAY! GOD’S GOT OUR BACKS! SO DON’T GET WEARY!
GOD’S GOT A BLESSING! WITH YOUR NAME ON IT!
GOD’S GOT A BLESSING! WITH YOUR NAME ON IT!
SO DON’T STOP WALKING IN THE CHRISTIAN WAY!
DON’T STOP BEING GENTLE, KIND, FAITHFUL, AND LOVING!
DON’T GET WEARY IN YOUR WELL DOING, BECAUSE GOD’S GOING TO BLESS YOU –IN DUE SEASON! YOUR SEASON IS COMING, IF YOU FAINT NOT!!!
IN DUE SEASON! TODAY MIGHT YOUR SEASON! TOMORROW MIGHT BE MINE! BUT WE CAN’T GET WEARY, BECAUSE WE ARE GOING TO REAP THE HARVEST! WE ARE GOING TO REAP THE HARVEST!
IF WE FAINT NOT!!!
HALLELUJAH!

In public life, especially in school, peer pressure can be overwhelming. Maybe you feel that everyone is indulging in activities that go against your values, and you’re tempted to just go along to fit in. Instead of giving in, remind yourself of the promise that God will reap a blessing if you hold on to your convictions. Find a trusted friend, mentor, or leader at your church, and share your struggles with them. Together, pray for courage and commit to standing firm in your faith, knowing that your integrity will set you apart and lead to unexpected blessings.
