Joshua, 2025
Message #2
01/12/2025
Joshua 1:10-18.
Central Idea: Joshua answered the call to lead the Israelites into the promised land.
Objectives: I want the hearers to know (cognitive) God’s calling requires them to answer with obedience so they might feel (affective) compelled to respond today answering the call and submitting their lives to His service (psycho-motor) according to whatever He calls them to do.
Guiding Question:
What is required to answer our calling?
We must do what God says. [vv. 10-11]
Deuteronomy 3:18–20 “18 “I commanded you at that time: The Lord your God has given you this land to possess. All your valiant men will cross over in battle formation ahead of your brothers the Israelites. 19 But your wives, dependents, and livestock—I know that you have a lot of livestock—will remain in the cities I have given you 20 until the Lord gives rest to your brothers as he has to you, and they also take possession of the land the Lord your God is giving them across the Jordan. Then each of you may return to his possession that I have given you.”
We must begin with the end in mind. [vv. 12-15]
The significance of these two-and-a-half tribes are important.
To prove Joshua is following all instructions (Num. 32:28-30)
To garner support of those already enjoying at least a glimpse of the promised land and rest (Numbers 32)
The promised rest, though, would not be fully experienced by the east tribes (those mentioned) until those on the west also experienced it.
Thus, for Joshua, it was important that he began leading with the end in mind— the end referring to the promised rest, the permanency of the land and security therein.
We must worship along the way. [vv. 16-18]
Obedience is the key to these verses and to the Israelites’ commitment to Joshua.
Obedience moves beyond mere hearing of the command to actually doing and going.
Rebellion instead of obedience was a serious offense.
Their commitment to Joshua, and their recitation of God’s command— be strong and resolute— reminds Joshua of his marching orders:
You lead us, strong and resolutely, and we will follow.
Response Questions:
[1] Have you accepted God’s promised rest for your life?
[2] Do you trust God’s leadership for your life?
Both God, Himself, as He leads and sends
And leaders God has called into your life— will you follow?
