Intro

Students!
We are in week 2 of our Mark series!
I hope you have been taking the Mark journaling Bibles serious!
Rather you use them for notes during the message
Personal Study
Add it to your collection of Bibles that you’ll one day use
Or anything else — I said this last week but I believe these will help you change and grow so much deeper in your relationship with Jesus if you just commit to using it
Here is my progress — show mine
But anyways back to the book of Mark!
A lot has happened in Chapter 1 since we left it last week
We talked about JTB showing up and baptizing
Well here is a recap of what happened:
VS. 8-11: Jesus was baptized
VS. 12-13: Jesus went into the eremos (wilderness / place of preparation) to reject Satan and seek the Lord before his ministry starts
VS. 14-15: Jesus starts preaching the gospel in Galilee
VS. 16-20: Jesus calls his first disciples, Simon, Andrew, James and John
VS. 21-28: Jesus casts out a demon from a man
VS. 29-34: Jesus healed many people including Simon’s mother-in-law
VS. 35-39: Jesus went to eremos to seek the Lord
VS. 40-45: Jesus healed a Leper which was considered impossible
Not to mention the Greek word “Euthys” was used 11 times — euthys is what is translated as “Immediately / at once” to show how Jesus was moving with urgency and decisivness
I told you last week — Mark is a book of ACTION!
Well today is no different

Bible passage

We are going to pick up immediately in verse 1 of chapter 2
Mark 2:1–12 ESV
1 And when he returned to Capernaum after some days, it was reported that he was at home. 2 And many were gathered together, so that there was no more room, not even at the door. And he was preaching the word to them. 3 And they came, bringing to him a paralytic carried by four men. 4 And when they could not get near him because of the crowd, they removed the roof above him, and when they had made an opening, they let down the bed on which the paralytic lay. 5 And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven.” 6 Now some of the scribes were sitting there, questioning in their hearts, 7 “Why does this man speak like that? He is blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?” 8 And immediately Jesus, perceiving in his spirit that they thus questioned within themselves, said to them, “Why do you question these things in your hearts? 9 Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise, take up your bed and walk’? 10 But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he said to the paralytic— 11 “I say to you, rise, pick up your bed, and go home.” 12 And he rose and immediately picked up his bed and went out before them all, so that they were all amazed and glorified God, saying, “We never saw anything like this!”
This is one of the most famous stories / miracles that Jesus does
He heals a paralyzed man!
Proclaims forgiveness of sins!
A roof is tore down!
It’s madness! And I love it!

Last week to this week

That is one of the best representations of what happened in the story
Plus it’s LEGO so its 10x better!
But last week we talked about how we should strive to be like JTB!
How we need to prepare a path for people to meet Jesus and these four friends do just that!
They do exactly what we talked about!
And they show us how we should be doing it!

Have compassion

The first thing the 4 friends are teaching us is this:
Have compassion
We need to have compassion on those that are lost and hurting and in need of a Jesus
The friends saw the man every day!
Because he was unable to walk he was considered unclean by Jewish terms and therefore couldn’t work
Instead he had to rely on peoples compassion
He relied on people to:
Give him money so he could eat
Drag him into town so he could beg for money
Clean and bathe him
Bring him and cook him the food he had money for
Literally everything
This man was dependent on others for everything in his life
It’s not a stretch to determine that the was dependent on the 4 men that helped him get to Jesus
I mean why would they go all that way for someone random — it could have been a relative, family member, or friend
But whatever the relationship — they had COMPASSION!
They cared for this man and his well being
They wanted to see him get to Jesus
They wanted to see him healed fully!
Students this needs to be the same thing for us
We need to have compassion for people
We need to see people struggling and care about them
If we trust in Jesus and his saving power — we must have compassion on those that are lost!
We must care that they are like this man — in desperate need of someone to show them the right path!
Isaiah 53:6 ESV
6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.
We have all at one time been like sheep — turning away from the Lord
If you trust in Jesus we must have compassion on those who still don’t know about him!

Tear the roof off

This compassion is what is going to fuel us to do the second thing the friends demonstrated:
Tear the roof off
The friends didn’t stop with just caring for their friend
They didn’t feel bad for him and let that stop them
Instead they did everything they could to him to Jesus
They dragged him to the house
They tore a roof off
As I was studying Mark 2 I came across this quote that sums up the magnitude of what they did:
Mark A. Jesus Is Lord over Sin and Sickness (2:1–12)

While Palestinian homes would have been accessible to someone wanting to get on the roof, it was by no means a daily occurrence. The houses were low, usually with an outside stairway to reach the roof. The roofs were tiled and covered with thatch. The four men had to drag the cot up the stairs, tear up the tiles, and dig through the thatch. The hole would have to be large enough to get the cot through. Add to this the annoyance of the people below. Debris would be falling on them as they tried to listen to the words of Jesus. A further complicating matter would be the damage to someone else’s property. We have no idea how the owner of the house, whether it was Simon Peter or someone else, reacted to the destruction of his property, but we can imagine that it came as quite a shock!

Think about that!
Just because you could get to the roof doesn’t mean it was normal — yet they did it carrying their friend
The hole they dug through the roof had to be large, debris is falling on people — that didn’t stop them
They had to get their friend to Jesus!
Nothing was going to stop them!
The ramifications for destroying private property? Doesn’t matter!
They had to get their friend to Jesus!
WE NEED TO TEAR THE ROOF OFF!
That is how people come to Jesus!
When we do whatever it takes to get them to Jesus!

Conclusion

Students our compassion for people must fuel our desire to get them to Jesus
We must tear the roof off!
BE THAT GUY!
BE THAT GIRL!
Be the one that always Jesus jukes and changes the subject to faith
Be that one that always makes it about faith
Be the one that always invites people to Church
Why? Because JESUS CHANGES LIVES!
Mark 2:5 ESV
5 And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven.”
Jesus saves!
HE FORGIVES SINS!
If you trust in Him he’s done it for you!
And he can do it for them too!
HAVE COMPASSION!
TEAR THE ROOF OFF!
