Life in a fallen world includes challenges from life itself as well as challenges from sin (both internal and external)
I. Challenges from Life Itself- 35:16–21
I. Challenges from Life Itself- 35:16–21
Challenges with our bodies (physical, mental, and spiritual, see the Gospels)
Challenges with our environment (natural disasters,
weather, etc.)
Challenges with other humans (both redeemed and unregenerate)
Often the challenges of life are mixed with the blessings of God.
II. Challenges from Sin (Both Internal and External)- 35:22
II. Challenges from Sin (Both Internal and External)- 35:22
These are often the harder challenges, because the closer we are to individuals (whether we are the sinner or the sinned against) will increase the pain, suffering, and hard work for restoration.
Proverbs 18:19 “A brother offended is more unyielding than a strong city, and quarreling is like the bars of a castle.”
Proverbs 6:34–35 “For jealousy makes a man furious, and he will not spare when he takes revenge. He will accept no compensation; he will refuse though you multiply gifts.”
A. Challenges from Internal Sin
A. Challenges from Internal Sin
These are sins we commit.
“Our sins can be forgiven, but the effects of our sins often must still be experienced.” Will Varner, Jacob’s Dozen: A Prophetic Look at the Tribes of Israel, 31
The principle well-said by John Owen remains, “Be killing sin, or sin will be killing you” (cf. Rom. 8:12–14)
B. Challenges from External Sin
B. Challenges from External Sin
These are sins committed against us.
The soul of the individual will affect our responses (saved vs. unsaved)
The significance of the sin will affect our responses (legal or illegal)
III. Principles to Help with Challenges
III. Principles to Help with Challenges
God directs all things, including the challenges of life, to cultivate Christ’s image in us- Rom. 8:28.
Maintain a thankful heart to God- 1 Thessalonians 5:18.
Minister, and be ministered to, as appropriate to the challenge- Rom. 12:9–21.
