Introduction

Jeremiah 17:9–10 NLT
9 “The human heart is the most deceitful of all things, and desperately wicked. Who really knows how bad it is? 10 But I, the Lord, search all hearts and examine secret motives. I give all people their due rewards, according to what their actions deserve.”
Last week, we looked over the 10 commandments that God gave to the Israelites, and discussed the difference btween ceremonial laws and moral laws.
In Connection Groups, you learned this week about the Israelites rebelling against God, and making a gold calf to worship.
Following the theme of Sunday, God spared the Israelites from death. God certainly was angry, and was going to kill them, but Moses, pleaded with the LORD and He relented.
God had the full right, and authority to kill every single one of them. But He did not. He instead, let them live, despite the numerous amounts of times they rejected Him.
God gave them chance, after chance, after chance. They rebelled against Him many times.

Why did they Reject God?

The same reason everyone does. Our hearts are wicked, and sinful.
Jeremiah 17:9 NLT
9 “The human heart is the most deceitful of all things, and desperately wicked. Who really knows how bad it is?
As stated last week and many other weeks, our hearts are wicked, and we are descieved by our hearts.
Our hearts lead us to:
Lie
Steal
Kill
Have sexual relations with same sex
Covet
And reject God, and anything good.
2 Timothy 3:1–5 NLT
1 You should know this, Timothy, that in the last days there will be very difficult times. 2 For people will love only themselves and their money. They will be boastful and proud, scoffing at God, disobedient to their parents, and ungrateful. They will consider nothing sacred. 3 They will be unloving and unforgiving; they will slander others and have no self-control. They will be cruel and hate what is good. 4 They will betray their friends, be reckless, be puffed up with pride, and love pleasure rather than God. 5 They will act religious, but they will reject the power that could make them godly. Stay away from people like that!
This text, shows the state of the world we live in now. According to scripture, we are living in the last days.
Let’s break down this text, and examine it closer.
2 Timothy 3:1 NLT
1 You should know this, Timothy, that in the last days there will be very difficult times.
Many Christians pray and hope for a “better time” to come. But friends, scripture is clear, these days will be difficult times. It may get better in small ways.
But no matter who is elected president, no matter how much peace we enter, no matter how great our economy is, times will continue to get worse and worse.
2 Timothy 3:2 NLT
2 For people will love only themselves and their money. They will be boastful and proud, scoffing at God, disobedient to their parents, and ungrateful. They will consider nothing sacred.
The 10 commandments we’ve talked about are shown here. People will make idols of themselves and money. They will worship creation, rather than the creator.
They will be boastful, and proud, scoffing at God. Being proud and boastful leads to this mentality. Why do I need God, when I have gotten this far by myself.
No one get’s anywhere without God allowing it. These people who claim they came to richness and fame and glory without God, are so naive.
2 Timothy 3:3 NLT
3 They will be unloving and unforgiving; they will slander others and have no self-control. They will be cruel and hate what is good.
As their hearts continue to harden, they will be unloving, unforgiving, and slander others. Using the tongue God blessed them with, to curse God’s creation.
They will be cruel, and hate what is good.
Friends, when we’re slaves to sin, we hate what is good. What is good? The Bible says God is good. And all good things come from Him.
Who is good? The Bible says no one is good. Only God.
So where does that leave us? We hate what is good, good is God, we hate God.
2 Timothy 3:4 NLT
4 They will betray their friends, be reckless, be puffed up with pride, and love pleasure rather than God.
A continuation of how messed up the world is. We betray those close to us, we are prideful and love pleasure rather than God.
In our sinful state, we want to do whatever is pleasurable to us. Despite how much is displeases God.
Sex before marriage
Pornography
Vaping, smoking
Cussing
Lying
Stealing
Disobeying
These thing are a result of our sinful heart. Our hearts lead us to do these things, because our hearts are wicked. Our hearts want only what brings us pleasure. We don’t care who it effects, or how God views it.
2 Timothy 3:5 NLT
5 They will act religious, but they will reject the power that could make them godly. Stay away from people like that!
Friends, some of you have been coming to this youth group for a good while. You have heard the Word of God week after week. Pastor Grady and I stand up here each week, reading to you the Bible.
You have acknowledged it, unless maybe you have zoned out week after week.
You come here, and you act religious, like you love Jesus and know Him personally.
But then you go back to school, and bull, and lie, and cuss, and vape, and go home and watch pornograhy. You think we don’t know, but the students sitting around you have seen it. And word travels fast.
You may know about Jesus, but you’ve never met Him. You don’t know Him personally.
I am not trying to scare you into a decision, but knowing about Christ is not enough to get you into Heaven.
Your Wednesday night attendance record will grant you no favor from God.
Unless you repent of your sins, and trust Jesus, you will not be saved.
You might be feeling a conviction of your sins, and sitting here in this moment wondering if you should trust Christ. But you might be thinking of putting it off.
Friend, life is not guaranteed. You may not make it home tonight.
You are rejecting the power, that can make you godly.
Your sins and trespasses against God can be forgiven. Just like the Israelites rebelled against God, you have too. But he offers you salvation tonight.
Respond to him.
