Video - Week 1
Title of the Series this Morning is “Joy”
Title of the Message this Morning is: Enjoying Yourself
Big Idea -
The secret to having joy in yourself is to find worth in what God says about you, and not what other people say about you or what you say about yourself.
To have joy in yourself, you find your worth in what God says about you.
Prayer-
“Lord, help us to see ourselves as you see us.
Help us to know who we are and who you made us to be.
Give us the courage to escape the traps of performance and comparison.”
Main Scripture - 1 Corinthians 3:21-22, Ephesians 1:3-5
Introduction
Introduction
I corinthians 3:21-22
Transition
We're going to look at the letter Paul wrote the church in corinth,
For context, Paul is on his second missionary journey, which means we're about in the year 52 AD, and he had just visited the church in Corinth, and now he is in Ephesus.
And there seems to be an exchange of letters between Paul and the people in Corinth.
And this letter is one of those letters where Paul responds to a lot of questions they had and all the reports he had been hearing.
One of the reports Paul got was about the pride and arrogance of the Corinthians.
People are trying to be the best at this new movement that followed Jesus.
Many people in Corinth were latching their identity and worth to some of the apostles, and Paul wants to correct that.
And so if we look in verse 21 and 22, this is what it says.
21 So let no one boast in human leaders, for everything is yours— 22 whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world or life or death or things present or things to come—everything is yours, 23 and you belong to Christ, and Christ belongs to God.
First thing Paul does is say “hey, listen! You guys need to get rid of this whole comparison thing and stop tying yourself to these different apostles.
The apostles all belong to Christ and Christ belongs to God.”
In fact, Paul wanted to tell them this partially because he knows that comparison is a joy stealer.
Joy Stealer

Comparing ourselves to others
I've found that when I compare myself to others, instead of having joy in that other person and how good they are at something, it actually raises my sense of anxiety, and I start to compete with them.

How to Have Joy about Yourself
Truth: Find your worth in what God says about you.
We are going to go on a quick journey to learn what God says about us.
Let’s look at Ephesians 1:3-5
3 Blessed is the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavens in Christ. 4 For he chose us in him, before the foundation of the world, to be holy and blameless in love before him. 5 He predestined us to be adopted as sons through Jesus Christ for himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,
This passage has five truths about you.
The first one is that I am blessed with every spiritual blessing.
I am blessed with every spiritual blessing (Ephesians 1:3)
Notice that it doesn’t say you are blessed with some of them.
You have every spiritual blessing.
Let that sink in.
Illustration
This passage says that God equips you with everything you need, with every spiritual blessing.
That's the truth of what God says about you.
And that's just one of the things I see in this.
Let's go to the second one.
You were chosen (Ephesians 1:4)
This also comes from Ephesians. It says, for he chose us in him when, before the foundation of the world, to be holy and blameless in love before him.
I love that phrase “before the foundations of the world.”
Before the world was even created, God was picking his team.
Illustration
And I don't know about you, but in school I hated picking teams.
I was never first, and I was never last.
But it wasn't always a fun thing.
When you were picked, that showed your value.
But you know what?
God showed how much he valued by when he picked you
He picked you [point to someone in the congregation].
He chose you [point to someone in the congregation].
He chose you [point to someone in the congregation]
and he chose you [point to someone in the congregation].
All those who are Christ followers, God chose you before the foundation of the world.
That's awesome.
Next, in the same passage, I am holy and blameless (Ephesians 1:4)
This truth can be a transformation in your life.
Sometimes we focus too much on living in the shame of being a sinner that is disobedient.
God lifts our head and says “hey, in my eyes,’ you have scored a perfect 10.
Not because of anything you did, but because of what Jesus did for you on the cross.
You now have the perfect score.
I look at you, and that is what I see.”
God looks at you and sees somebody that is blameless and holy, set apart for his purposes.
That's what he sees.
Next, it says that I am adopted as his child.
I am adopted as his child (Ephesians 1:5)
Again, we're still in Ephesians.
It says he predestined us to be adopted as sons and daughters through Jesus Christ for himself according to the good pleasure of his will.
And so I don't know about your family or what family of origin.
I don’t know if you had a good family or a family growing up.
It doesn’t matter if you loved your parents, hated your parents, or never knew your parents.
God says you are his adopted child and that you are now his son, you are his daughter.
Next it says that I am forgiven.
I am forgiven (Ephesians 1:7)
Is there that thing in your past that still rears its ugly head that you haven't forgiven yourself of?
Know that God has forgiven you because of what Jesus did for you.
The next thing God says about you is that
I am loved (1 John 3:1)
This verse says
It says, see what great love the Father has given to us, that we should be called God's children.
And we are.
I love how it ties between love and children there.
In another translation it says,
see what great love God has lavished on us.
And I just think of God lavishing us with his love like dumping water on us.
It's not just a little cup of love.
It's not just a little piece of love.
It is a bucket full of love that is poured onto us because now we are children of God.
Illustration
And here's the thing about children. When a parent has a child, you can't break that relationship because you are always a parent. Now that relationship can be estranged, and you could never be talking. That's not the point here. The point here is that you will always be a parent and there will always be a child.
And that's the same with God.
That relationship is permanent when you are a Christ follower, and it can't be broken.
You are God's child.
There's nothing you can do to really make God love you more.
And there's nothing that you can do to make God love you less.
The next one is that you are God's masterpiece.
You are God's masterpiece.
I am God’s masterpiece (Ephesians 2:10)
It is not an accident that God created you the way you are.
Illustration
And when I think of masterpieces, I think of the painter Bob Ross.
He's amazing.
But I love the care and attention he gives in his painting.
And he starts just painting something over here.
You have no idea what it is, but Bob said he is making a tree.
But I don't see a tree.
I just see blotches of paint.
And suddenly, within like two minutes, you see it.
It's trees with snow. And then the sun is beaming off this lake that he painted.
As you watch him, he creates a masterpiece before your eyes.
That's what God did with us.
He created you as one of his masterpieces.
The next is that I am a new creation.
I am a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17)
This is from 2 Corinthians 5, 17 where it says that you are our “made new.”
Illustration
I don't know if you ever watched any of these fix up shows, Fixer upper, or anything on HGTV.
Pepper watches the everyday.
They take this house that's like rat infested and there's mold everywhere.
And the kitchen is super small and like there's no dishwasher.
It's just disgusting there.
You can't even live there.
It's almost condemned.
They start removing walls and renovating the house.
By the end it's a gleaming white house that is brand new.
And it's got top of the line stainless steel appliances.
The kitchen has been totally remodeled and it's bigger than before.
It's a beautiful island with a granite countertop
It’s amazing the transformation that they do to that house.
That's the transformation that God does in our lives of taking us from that old, almost condemned house to something new
Lastly,
I belong. (1 Cor 12:27)
God says that you belong.
You belong in a new community, and that's who we are.
The commonality we have is our belief in Jesus Christ,
And we belong in this new community.
I have this phrase here that summarizes everything that is on that list that we just went through.
Let's say it together.
I am a blessed, chosen, holy, blameless, adopted, forgiven, loved, masterpiece, who is a new creation and belongs to a new community.
That is what God says about you.
So every day this week, I want you, when you wake up, I want you to see that.
I want you to read that every day next week and see how that changes the way you think about yourself.
Conclusion
Conclusion
So in conclusion, comparing yourself to others steals your joy.
The truth is you must find your worth in what God says about you.
And we saw what God said about us; We are blessed, chosen, holy, blameless, adopted, forgiven, loved. A masterpiece who is a new creation and belongs to a new community.
When you find your worth in God, you can have joy by knowing that your performance gets a 10 rating.
It's not our performance that gets the rating.
Rather, God has already given us a perfect 10 because of what Jesus has done for us.
You can remember to have joy because God has already deemed you as something that is valuable because he sent his son to die on the cross for you.
You can silence that inner critic and preach the truth of what God has said to yourself.
Doesn't that sound like a joyful life?
Let’s pray together.
Let’s pray together.
Salvation:
Salvation:
The Word of God says in: John 3:16
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
For “whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
If you’d would like to receive Jesus today, please pray this prayer with all of us:
Lord I believe that Jesus is the Son of God, and that He died On the cross for my sins and His resurrection from the dead gives me eternal life. I ask forgiveness of my sins, and I accept Jesus as my Lord and Savior. Amen.

I am a blessed, chosen, holy, blameless,
adopted, forgiven, loved, masterpiece, who is a new creation and belongs to a
new community.
We do not draw people to Christ by loudly discrediting what they believe, by telling them how wrong they are and how right we are, but by showing them a light that is so lovely that they want with all their hearts to know the source of it.” -Madeliene L’Engle (Lang ill)
