Psalm 139
Psalm 139 (ESV)
1 O Lord, you have searched me and known me! 2 You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar. 3 You search out my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways. 4 Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O Lord, you know it altogether. 5 You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me. 6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high; I cannot attain it.
7 Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence? 8 If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there! 9 If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, 10 even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me. 11 If I say, “Surely the darkness shall cover me, and the light about me be night,” 12 even the darkness is not dark to you; the night is bright as the day, for darkness is as light with you.
13 For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. 14 I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. 15 My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. 16 Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.
17 How precious to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them! 18 If I would count them, they are more than the sand. I awake, and I am still with you.
19 Oh that you would slay the wicked, O God! O men of blood, depart from me 20 They speak against you with malicious intent; your enemies take your name in vain. 21 Do I not hate those who hate you, O Lord? And do I not loathe those who rise up against you? 22 I hate them with complete hatred; I count them my enemies.
23 Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! 24 And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!
God knows everything about you and He cares about everything in your life.
Psalm 139:1–6 (ESV)
1 O Lord, you have searched me and known me! 2 You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar. 3 You search out my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways. 4 Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O Lord, you know it altogether. 5 You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me. 6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high; I cannot attain it.
He knows your doing He knows your thinking He knows your reasons He is greater than you
God love is overwhelming, and leads us to worship.
Vs 8
God reigns over the entire universe and yet He is near to you
Psalm 139:7–12 (ESV)
7 Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence? 8 If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there! 9 If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, 10 even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me. 11 If I say, “Surely the darkness shall cover me, and the light about me be night,” 12 even the darkness is not dark to you; the night is bright as the day, for darkness is as light with you.
God is omnipresent in the world God is with you and leading you through all that you face in life God good, safe, and overcomes the darkness
Psalm 139:13–18 (ESV)
God made you on purpose, for a purpose.
Key words in this passage:
“Inward parts” = the most secret part, this is where you know right from wrong. In our culture we would call this the heart, in the Hebrew culture this is seen as the gut or kidney area. “frame” = the deepest parts of a person, indicative of a persons nature because they were the longest lasting part of the body after death. “Unformed substance” = embryo, this is significant because it means that at the point of conception God has the days and purposes of each person planned, before they have happened. God doesn’t look backward at the past to know the future- instead God has planned and prepared each person for the future He has designed. “thoughts” = want, purpose, aim, intention
God designed your personality
Not only did God design humanity, he is intricately involved in every life all the way down to the soul and nature of each person. This means God made you.
God’s creative work does not negate the stain of sin that is passed from Adam. Through faith in Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit God provides all that is necessary for a person to live in a manner that is worthy of His name and brings him glory.
God designed your body
This means your biology and gender are defined by God. This means your weaknesses, or even what the world would say isn’t worth living with is on purpose and for a purpose… even things like down syndrome, cerebral palsy, and other infirmities and diseases.
God designed your days and made you for them and them for you
Not only does this psalm point out that God makes a person, but he has a plan for them. Ephesians 1 says that in Christ God has works prepared beforehand of us to do.
God’s purpose for you is precious because life is precious
The God of the universe, of all creation, sees an embryo at conception- this is when life begins, and life is precious to God. He is the giver of life- all life.
God’s purpose for you is His glory
God’s plan is precious to David. This is the same for us as Christians. We recognize that God made us and made us with a plan, and we treasure and pursue God’s plan (thoughts) for us.
God is worthy of your praise
Unending praise! Even you if you listed everything you know about God on paper and continued in in your sleep when you wake up there are still things to praise him for- like the sand on the sea-shore.
God’s promise to Abraham was that his descendants would be like the sand on the shore or the stars in the sky- God is worthy of praise, and his church is the descendants of Abraham by faith (Hebrews) and is called to live lives of praise (scripture?)
God made you the way you are on purpose, for a purpose, and for His glory
This truth shapes how we understand our purpose and what we do with our lives. God’s glory and purpose will never contradict His expressed will… and this directly relates to sin.
God made just the way you are because of His purpose and plans for your life.
Psalm 139:19–22 (ESV)
19 Oh that you would slay the wicked, O God! O men of blood, depart from me 20 They speak against you with malicious intent; your enemies take your name in vain. 21 Do I not hate those who hate you, O Lord? And do I not loathe those who rise up against you? 22 I hate them with complete hatred; I count them my enemies.
When it comes to sin… you may think or say that God made me this way, therefore I can’t help it- and you may come to the conclusion that your sin is acceptable and even affirmed by God. But, this isn’t true- Romans 1 is clear, that those who reject God holiness will condone and support sin in their own lives and others. Sin isn’t about being better or worse, sin is about being against holiness… God is holy, we are sinners, and God will never condone the sin that Jesus died to save us from.
Fulfillment, joy, and satisfaction are found by living according to God’s design, purpose, and plan for your life.
This is true for all of your relationships and in all of your situations and circumstances. See Psalm 139:23-24
Psalm 139:23–24 (ESV)
23 Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! 24 And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!
God’s purpose and plan begins with surrender, is followed by faith in Jesus and repentance from sin, and then pursued by living according to His grand and good design.
Surrender your life to God by submitting to His design, purpose, and plans. Trust Jesus and repent of your grievous ways. Pursue and live life in ways that match up with your faith and testimony.
Love what God loves, hate what God hates, and never lose sight of the reality of His love, grace, and kindness toward us in Jesus.
God’s purpose and plan is for you, for the people around you, for those closest to you, for those around the world, and on Sanctify of Human Life Sunday- we want to be reminded that God’s purpose and plan is for the most vulnerable, voiceless, and powerless in the world- babies in the womb.
Three specific ways to be active today in honor of Sanctity of Life Sunday
