**"The One Thing You Can’t Compromise"** This message dives into the third temptation of Jesus, where Satan offers power in exchange for worship. The enemy's goal isn’t to get you to worship him but to worship *anything* other than God. We’ll uncover why worship is so powerful, how the enemy tries to redirect it, and how Scripture equips us to resist temptation and stay devoted to the Lord.

3 Plays
Play 1 — Doubt God’s provision
Play 2 — Doubt God’s plan
Today we cover the 3rd and last play the enemy runs.
Compromise — Coffee
Tension
You have things like that too right? What compromise really says is “that wasn’t really that important.” That’s even how ou say it in conversation too right? Come on honey, it’s not that important but buy this. In some areas of your life that ok, compromise is great, but in others it’s dangerous.
Don’t compromise on your brakes — cars safety — good doctor — clean water — good beer (jk jk, just wanted to see if you were awake)
Somethings you don’t compromise on. You pay the extra, you drive the distance to get it, you sacrifice to make it happen why? B/c it’s important.
I am going to make the arguement today that your worship is like that also, you cannot compromise it. Trun with me...
Truth
Prep the ground — bring them up to speed on where we’ve been and where we’re going.
Matthew 4:8–11 NIV
8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. 9 “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.” 10 Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’” 11 Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him.
Now lets take a look at what really going on here.
Matthew 4:8 NIV
8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor.
Two different views for this event.
Jesus is seeing this in the heavenly places — somehow the enemy gets into Jesus head and presents all the nations of the world.
Jesus walks with Satan to a high mountain in the desert where he can see the the city of Jerusalem and the surrounding towns and villages.
I lean towards this one being what happened.
Matthew 4:8–9 NIV
8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. 9 “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.”
Notice this — the adversary always comes with a promise. Every temptation comes with a promise. A promise of…
Power — influence — money — comfort — control
Every time temptation comes with a promise. The reason why is bc the enemy wants you to compromise. He wants you to trade your purpose for what he has.
And at first it seems like these are excellent trades. Especially in this instance. Satan shows Jesus what he can offer (it’s a lie) and says all you need to do (the compromise is often easier than your calling, it’s a short cut) worship me.
Compromise your worship.
Worship is so powerful — Satan knows this, he was Heavens worship leader. He knew the importance of it and how it affected your soul. Thats why the same temptation he tries over and over again is to get us to compromise our worship.
Worship is love expressed through devotion and sacrifice.
In this instance he wants Jesus to worship him, but if we’re being honest he’s not trying to get you to do that. He trying to get you to worship anything but God. Anything but Jesus.
Worship the…
Money — status — influence — wife — husband — political party — political figure — self image — physical appearance — lifestyle
Satan doesn’t need you to worship him, he wants you to worship anything other than God. Anything that pulls you away from the Lord.
In short >> he wants you to love other things more than God. He wants you devoted to other things — sacrifice for other things.
B/c if he can get you to worship those things you won’t have time for God… isn’t he so good at that.
“I don’t have time to pray” — “Don’t have money to give” — “I would love to come to group, but I’ve got ________”
Now I am not saying that all that stuff is bad, but I am prompting you to ask the question.
What do I worship?
You worship something, what is it?
The enemy wants you to worship anything other than God. Jesus respond should be our response.
Matthew 4:10–11 NIV
10 Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’” 11 Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him.
Jesus again quotes scripture — this time Deuteronomy 6:13, is God’s warning to Israel not to worship anything other than him. It was a warning to them that nothing else in the world will provide what you need besides the Lord.
Notice something here >>> Jesus resisted the devil and after that he left him.
Now Satan will come back, but when you resist him he will move on — temptations don’t last forever. James the brother of Jesus sums it up this way…
James 4:7 NIV
7 Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
Testings aren’t forever, resist the lies and they’ll subside for a time — not forever he always comes back — but the Lord will come to your aid and refresh you for the next testing.
Application
The defense against lies is the truth — more specifically God’s truth. In a world where truth has been twisted and can mean anything we must lean on God’s truth.
When the enemy speaks, let Scripture respond.
That means you and I need to be familiar with the Word of God. We need to know what the Lord said about certain things. So when the lies come, we let Scripture respond. Just like Jesus did.
Inspiration
Think back to all the moments in your life where you believed the lie and started worshiping something else.
college you worshipped that girl — worshipped that job — worshipped your kids for a season — worshipped the money
How empty you were and how exhausted where you?
Recap on the 3 plays.
Play 1 — Doubt God’s provision
Play 2 — Doubt God’s plan
Play 3 — Compromise your worship
