January Self-Examine

When a new year comes up it is always a time to look back at the previous year and take tally of what we have done and what goals we hit or goals that we missed.
It is a chance to set new goals and fall short of those goals.
But what we are really doing when we look back and look forward is that we begin to examine and access ourselves.
In 1 cor 11, Paul is speaking to the Corinthians about how to take the Lord’s supper properly.
And in verse 28 he says;
1 Corinthians 11:28 ESV
Let a person examine himself, then, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup.
Paul is saying look at yourself— examine yourself as you come to the table as you take the bread and drink the cup.
Look inwardly and assess how we are doing in our walk with the Lord.
Sometimes when it comes to spiritual things we tend to think about it only on Sunday mornings—
I heard a quote this week that if we only think about Jesus once a week for one hour, he isn’t our savior— merely just someone we visit.
Paul is saying take stock— look at yourself.
I think for many of us, as the new year came around we looked at where we are when it comes to our financially situation, we want to be a better employee or maybe a better boss, be a better spouse or parent, we want to get swoll in the gym, have a better diet, grow in our leadership or even learn a new hobby.
Yet, how many of us took into account our spiritual walk when we set new goals?
How many of us took an examination of our faith and set goals on how we can grow closer to the Lord?
Maybe it is looking at sin that has plagued us for years and it is finally time to confess and seek freedom for that sin.
Maybe it is us to laying that down at the foot of the cross where Jesus forgives and offers freedom from sin.
Maybe it is us just growing in ur faith.
Looking to be discipled by someone or for us to disciple someone.
Maybe it for us to get of the sidelines and get involved with what God is doing here.
So this morning before we take of communion I want us to take sometime to just quiet our souls, seek the Lord and examine ourselves before we come to the table this morning.
After a few moments— I will lead us in taking the bread and the cup.
PRAYER
1 Corinthians 11:23 ESV
For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread,
Take the Bread:
1 Corinthians 11:24 ESV
and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”
and then the Cup:
1 Corinthians 11:25 ESV
In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.”
1 Corinthians 11:26 ESV
For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.
Will you pray with me:
