Introduction
The saying goes you don’t know what a person is made of until they are in hot water is a reality. The hardships as well as the plenty of life reveal what is in us and sometimes it isn’t pretty.
This is what we will see as Israel has been settled in the land and a generation arises that does not know the Lord or obey Him.
Now these are the nations which the Lord left, to prove Israel by them, even as many of Israel as had not known all the wars of Canaan;
Only that the generations of the children of Israel might know, to teach them war, at the least such as before knew nothing thereof;
Namely, five lords of the Philistines, and all the Canaanites, and the Sidonians, and the Hivites that dwelt in mount Lebanon, from mount Baal-hermon unto the entering in of Hamath.
And they were to prove Israel by them, to know whether they would hearken unto the commandments of the Lord, which he commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses.
And the children of Israel dwelt among the Canaanites, Hittites, and Amorites, and Perizzites, and Hivites, and Jebusites:
And they took their daughters to be their wives, and gave their daughters to their sons, and served their gods.
And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord, and forgat the Lord their God, and served Baalim and the groves.
Therefore the anger of the Lord was hot against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Chushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia: and the children of Israel served Chushan-rishathaim eight years.
And when the children of Israel cried unto the Lord, the Lord raised up a deliverer to the children of Israel, who delivered them, even Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother.
And the Spirit of the Lord came upon him, and he judged Israel, and went out to war: and the Lord delivered Chushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand; and his hand prevailed against Chushan-rishathaim.
And the land had rest forty years. And Othniel the son of Kenaz died.
P. God wants his people to know Him and will put them in situations to test their resolve to know Him.
D. God still today wants us to have a relationship with Him.
T. 1 John 1:3–4 “That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ. And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full.”
Yet, we find in this life if we are unguarded with our relationship with God we default to sin. We find this in the nation of Israel.
God proves his people’s commitment to him, punishment when disobedient, prevailing against oppression when the Lord is sought, and peace once again in the land.
God proves His people’s commitment.
explain
The purpose of enemies is to test his peoples loyalty.
Who were the nations:
The Philistines along the Mediterranean
The Canaanites, Sidonians, and Hivites that dwelt in Mount Lebanon till Hamath.
God wants to know the loyalty of his people and give them the opportunity to learn to war.
The word to know and its cognates are used four times in these eleven verses
Ignorance 1 of war
Instructed 2a know how to war
Initiated 2b Get experience
Insightful 4 Commitment of obedience
God also does not intend our lives to be without conflict.
The Christian is called to suffer for Christ. 1 Peter 2:21 “For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:”
The Christian is to know how to war.
2 Timothy 2:1–3 “Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also. Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.”
Psalm 144:1 “Blessed be the Lord my strength, Which teacheth my hands to war, And my fingers to fight:”
Put on the armor and fight. Get in the battle or be trampled. Ephesians 6:13 “Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.”
You are going to be able to be loyal and win. 1 Corinthians 10:13 “There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.”
argue
The testing of the Lord is difficult, but forces us to seek his strength.
Psalm 105:4 “Seek the Lord, and his strength: Seek his face evermore.”
Have you been seeking God with discipline or lazy. If you are lazy you’ll be beaten.
illustrate: Proving metals. The dross is removed. The dross was already there. It was brought to the surface by the heat of the fire.

How deep is your resolve to obey God.
Job 23:10 “But he knoweth the way that I take: When he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold.”
God Punishes his peoples disobedience.
explain
Look at the service of God’s people.
Serve the false gods
They forsook the God who made and redeemed them.
This was caused through
infiltration - dwelling with the heathen instead of getting rid of the heathen.
intermarriage with the heathen.
Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?
Serve Baalim (plural)
Serve Chushan-rishathaim - double wickedness.
argue
illustrate: you are stuck with the consequences. You may choose your sin, but not its consequences.

God will chasten you if you are his child because he loves you.
God will chasten you so you return to him.
God Pays attention to his peoples cries of repentance.
explain
Lamentations 3:22–24 “It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness. The Lord is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him.”
Psalm 51:17 “The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: A broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.”
argue
I have cried out and I am still in the hardship.
You may be forgiven, but choice have consequences.
