Psalm 139:5–12 NLT
Psalm 139:5–12 5 You go before me and follow me. You place your hand of blessing on my head. 6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too great for me to understand! 7 I can never escape from your Spirit! I can never get away from your presence! 8 If I go up to heaven, you are there; if I go down to the grave, you are there. 9 If I ride the wings of the morning, if I dwell by the farthest oceans, 10 even there your hand will guide me, and your strength will support me. 11 I could ask the darkness to hide me and the light around me to become night— 12 but even in darkness I cannot hide from you. To you the night shines as bright as day. Darkness and light are the same to you.
God knows everything and is everywhere
Tonight: false identity
WE ALL HAVE A FALSE IDENTITY THAT IS WRAPPED UP IN SUPERFICIAL, SHALLOW, AND TEMPORARY THINGS.
Misc. examples.

Just got a fresh, new haircut – I feel great.
Just aced my chemistry test – Feeling fantastic.
Just got new shoes – Wow, I’m gorgeous.
Just got a huge check at work – I’m Jeff Bezos

Just got cut from the team – I’m a loser.
Got a bad haircut – I’m ugly.
Failed my test – I’m stupid.
I’m poor – I can’t do anything.

Our culture values these thing
They’re false!
FALSE identity.
A bad car accident.
IF YOUR VALUE AND IDENTITY ARE DEPENDENT UPON SUPERFICIAL TEMPORARY THINGS, THEY CAN BE TAKEN AWAY.
TEMPORARY IDENTITY EQUALS TEMPORARY VALUE.
Eternal
YOUR REAL VALUE CAN NEVER BE TAKEN AWAY BECAUSE IT IS ETERNAL.
Share story about son
Your real identity, and your real value come from one thing alone:
YOU ARE A CHILD OF THE KING.
Can’t earn it (the Gospel)
1 John 3:1a
1 See how very much our Father loves us, for he calls us his children, and that is what we are!
Willing to give his life
Died bc child
Conclusion:
Next lesson...
What are the superficial things that make you feel valuable to others, or to God?
What thing in your life, if taken away, would make you feel less valuable?
Would you feel like God loved you a little bit less?
That God would spend a little less time with you?
That God would kind of just forget about you?
OR – Are there GOOD things that you could do, that you feel like would make you more valuable or more loved by God?
Would you feel that God would love you more and spend more time with you if you did more stuff for him? Sinned less?
Living for something else = false identity.
My prayer today: worth from what He has already done.
PRAY
Small Group Questions:
In regard to superheroes who have a real identity and a secret identity, which is which? Is their crime-fighting identity their real identity, or their secret identity?
Do we create our own identity, or does God?
Are there any temporary/worldly things that you’re letting define your identity?
What would you do if those things were gone? Would you still feel valuable to people? Would you still feel valuable to God?
What do you need prayer for?
