Q53 How can we escape God’s good wrath against us for our sins? A53 Escape depends upon agreeing with God and believing His Gospel (Mk 1.15)
Interaction: Is God good? What else is good about God (WRITE OUT AS LONG A LIST AS THEY CAN COME UP WITH)
Is God’s justice good? Is His righteousness good? Is His holiness? (THIS IS INTENDED TO GET THEM TO THINK ABOUT HOW GOD’S GOODNESS PERMEATES ALL HIS ATTRIBUTES)
SLOWLY What about God’s wrath? Is God’s wrath against sin good? (LET THEM THINK ABOUT THIS - DON’T RUSH THEM)
Scripture:
2 Peter 2:4–9 “For if God did not spare angels who sinned, but cast them into the pit and delivered them to chains of darkness, being kept for judgment; and did not spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah, a preacher of righteousness, with seven others, when He brought a flood upon the world of the ungodly; and if He condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to destruction by reducing them to ashes, having made them an example to those who would live ungodly lives thereafter; and if He rescued righteous Lot, oppressed by the sensual conduct of unprincipled men (for by what he saw and heard that righteous man, while living among them, felt his righteous soul tormented day after day by their lawless deeds), then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trial, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment for the day of judgment,”
Transition to Theological Concept So because God is good He pours His wrath out on wicked angels and people and because God is good He decides to save some like Noah and Lot
Here’s a question did the folks that were drowned in the flood have a chance to escape? Yep! they had 100 years to repent, they had a century to agree with God and believe in His means of salvation - but only Noah did.
What about the folks in Sodom and Gomorrah? Lot’s life had been a testimony against them and when the angels came to rescue Lot the people of Sodom turned on him, but only Lot and his daughters survived. His sons-in-law when they were warned mocked against the warning. What should they have done? They should have run for the hills to escape the good wrath of God.
Question and Answer: So here is tonight’s question: Q53 How can we escape God’s good wrath against us for our sins? A53 Escape depends upon agreeing with God and believing His Gospel (Mark 1:15 “and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.””)
Restate: Jesus’ first recorded words in the Gospel of Mark are, “repent and believe the Gospel!”
What is it to repent? Quite simply it is agreeing with God about
Our sin
Our sins consequences and penalty
Our need of a Savior to take the penalty in our place
To repent is to turn, to change direction, to change our mind - to stop going in a bad direction and return to the straight path.
What is it to believe?
To believe is to have a confident assurance in what God has said - it is like sitting in a chair, we know that it will hold us up and we put all of our weight in the chair - not even worrying if it will work, we put all our weight on it
Hebrews 11:1“Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.”
What is the Gospel
1 Corinthians 15:1–6“Now I make known to you, brothers, the gospel which I proclaimed as good news to you, which also you received, in which also you stand, by which also you are saved, if you hold fast the word which I proclaimed to you as good news, unless you believed for nothing. For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that He appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. After that He appeared to more than five hundred brothers at one time, most of whom remain until now, but some have fallen asleep.”
Questions? Who has a question?
Q53 How can we escape God’s good wrath against us for our sins? A53 Escape depends upon agreeing with God and believing His Gospel (Mark 1:15 “and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.””)
Why does this matter?
Those who agree with God in repentance and believe in God’s Good News can expect to avoid God’s good wrath
Those that reject God and His Good News will confront His wrath against their sin personally
There are many many people that believe that God will receive them into heaven because they are “good” - it isn’t true. Only God is good and only perfect people go to heaven (Perfection is received by faith in the Gospel)
So how should this lesson change us?
This lesson should first and foremost lead to a praise to God for His good wrath against sin - He is the perfect Judge that will not let any one sin slide
This lesson should cause us to look at ourselves as God does. If in Christ a perfect child of God who is sinless because of Jesus’ payment on the cross, if outside of Christ a reasonable expectation of God’s justice
This lesson should lastly generate within us a deep concern for others who do not know of their danger. And not just a concern but also a willingness to warn - whether they heed the warning or not is not our responsibility

Ask if anyone has questions then define terminology
Definitions and Examples for Key Terms
Wrath Definition: God’s holy and just anger directed against sin and evil. Example: Like a judge sentencing a criminal, God’s wrath is His righteous judgment against all wrongdoing. (Romans 1:18 “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness,” )
Repentance: Turning away from sin with sincere regret and a changed heart. (2 Corinthians 7:10 “For godly sorrow produces a repentance without regret, leading to salvation, but the sorrow of the world brings about death.”
Faith: Trusting wholly in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus for salvation. (Hebrews 11:1 “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.” )

68. Q. How may we escape his wrath and curse due to us for sin?
A. To escape the wrath and curse of God due to us for sin, we must believe in the Lord Jesus Christ (Jn. 3:16), trusting alone to his blood and righteousness. This faith is attended by repentance for the past (Acts 20:21) and leads to holiness in the future.
