Worship

Defintion of Worship: Worship is the awed response to the saving acts and praiseworthy character of God. It is praise rendered to a Holy God which is sinful to render to any created being.
Exodus 34:14 ESV
(for you shall worship no other god, for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God),
Isaiah 2:8 ESV
Their land is filled with idols; they bow down to the work of their hands, to what their own fingers have made.
Such worship was refused by Peter
Acts 10:25–26 ESV
When Peter entered, Cornelius met him and fell down at his feet and worshiped him. But Peter lifted him up, saying, “Stand up; I too am a man.”
and by an angel
Revelation 22:8–9 ESV
I, John, am the one who heard and saw these things. And when I heard and saw them, I fell down to worship at the feet of the angel who showed them to me, but he said to me, “You must not do that! I am a fellow servant with you and your brothers the prophets, and with those who keep the words of this book. Worship God.”
Worship can be described as much more than singing, it is offering your entire life as a living sacrifice
Romans 12:1–2 ESV
I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
We can break Worship down into 4 different areas;
Worship is found in the bible under “Proskyneo” in greek of hwh in hebrew.
Means = Bowing down to a deity.
When Moses came back to egypt after speaking with God it says;
Exodus 4:31 ESV
And the people believed; and when they heard that the Lord had visited the people of Israel and that he had seen their affliction, they bowed their heads and worshiped.
The second word is Latreuo means “To worship a deity, conceived of as serving the deity”
and was used all through the OT to say what you worship, you will serve.
Deuteronomy 11:16 ESV
Take care lest your heart be deceived, and you turn aside and serve other gods and worship them;
Last word is Ainesis = Offering words of homage as an act of Worship.
It’s used most often through the Psalms Psalm 66:2
Psalm 66:2 ESV
sing the glory of his name; give to him glorious praise!
the last word is Sebazomai - it means “To show devotion to a deity or image of a deity”
It’s what Paul uses when describing the wrath of God;
Romans 1:24–25 ESV
Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen.
As we go through these definition of Worship, we can see that it’s more than just singing a song - It’s living out the commandment of Jesus;
Matthew 22:37 ESV
And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.
We where created to Worship our God - In every aspect of our lives.
Worship lives out our vision, to be fully devoted to a Holy God, to offer Him all of us, because Jesus offered us all of Him.
You are here, not only because you have an amazing gift that God has given you, but because we see your heart for the Lord, and we want you to help lead others to have a heart full of devotion for the Lord.
Let me finish by reading one of our core verses;
Psalm 95 ESV
Oh come, let us sing to the Lord; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation! Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise! For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods. In his hand are the depths of the earth; the heights of the mountains are his also. The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands formed the dry land. Oh come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker! For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand. Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts, as at Meribah, as on the day at Massah in the wilderness, when your fathers put me to the test and put me to the proof, though they had seen my work. For forty years I loathed that generation and said, “They are a people who go astray in their heart, and they have not known my ways.” Therefore I swore in my wrath, “They shall not enter my rest.”
