Jonah 3:1-5

Bible Passage: Jon 3:1–5

On may 28 1993 the Mississippi mas choir release entitled it remains to be seen.

The had a song that i believe most of us know it was called your grace and mercy.

I love that song i love the words to the song matter of fact a few words are, your grace and mercy brought me through, im living this moment because of you i want to thank you and praise you too your grace and mercy brought me through.

I love that song because they were conveying a message to the listeners that we in bad shape.

In a bad condition deserving what punishment they deserve.

But because God was so merciful and graceful they sing that God has brought them through.

It was no good of their own that God had brought them but it was simply Because the Lord Jesus was showed great mercy.

Thats all of our testimony this Morning if in this church under the sound of my voice and have a relationship with the Lord and on your way to heaven when christ comes get you.

Its not because you deserved it. But its because God extended relentless mercy towards you.

MPT: That’s what our text is about this Morning that is God has shown relentless mercy to a nation of people who were wicked and deserving of destruction.

But yet through a stubborn prophet named Jonah God would give them the opportunity through his mercy for Repentance.

MPT: That’s what our sermon is about this morning how when we lost and without hope and deserving of whatever God allowed sent or allowed in our life.

Because God has showed us his relentless mercy we have granted not a second chance but another chance to get our lives back in order with Him.

Summary: In Jonah 3:1–5, God commands Jonah a second time to deliver His message to Nineveh, an impending judgment due to their wickedness. Jonah obeys, and upon receiving his warning, the people of Nineveh, from the king to the commoner, respond with genuine repentance, demonstrating the transformative power of God's word and mercy.

Big Idea: God's mercy is available to all who repent, emphasizing that His love transcends judgment and extends to the furthest corners of society. Through obedience, we become instruments of His grace.

1. God's Relentless Call

Jonah 3:1-3 Then the word of the LORD came to Jonah the second time, saying, 2 “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and call out against it the message that I tell you.” 3 So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the LORD

Exegesis:

God gave Jonah a second chance to obey Him, as He has many of His servants.

The writer did not clarify exactly when this second commission came to Jonah.

It may have been immediately after Jonah reached dry land, or it may have been sometime later.

The writer's point seems to be that God gave the prophet a second commission, not when it came to him

God does not always give His servants a second chance to obey Him after they refused to do so initially. Jonah after being so reluctant to follow the call of God on his life God spared Jonah live to give him a second chance to follow God.

In Jonah's case, God sovereignly chose to use Jonah for this mission—just as He had sovereignly sent the storm and the fish to do His will.

The sovereignty of God is a strong revelation in this book.

illustrations:

there is a story about a man who was incarcerated for a crime he committed in his youth. While in prison,

he came to faith and realized the enormity of his past mistakes.

Upon his release, he dedicated his life to helping at-risk youth avoid the same path he took.

God had not only forgiven him; He had turned his life around, providing him an opportunity to restore and counsel others.

This teaches us that with God, second chances can lead to transformed lives.

3. Nineveh's Genuine Repentance

Jonah 3:5
You could consider the unexpected repentance of the Ninevites as a testament to God's transformative grace, available for all who turn to Him. This reflects the ultimate grace offered through Christ's sacrifice. Highlight the theme of radical transformation, encouraging believers to trust in the power of repentance and forgiveness, as these can lead to redemption and new life in Christ.
