Rejoice for the Resurrection!

A woman was on her way to church and he booked a grab car…the car arrived and she quickly jumped in the back.
Halfway through the drive, she asked the driver a question, but the driver didn’t respond. So she leaned forward and tapped the driver on the arm. The driver let out a loud scream, swerved into the other lane, almost hit another car, slammed on the brakes, and skidded over to the shoulder.
The woman and driver sat in silence for a minute from the shock of what just happened. Finally, she said apologetically, “Wow, I’m so sorry. I had no idea that tapping your shoulder would alarm you like that.”
“No, wala ra kay gibuhat nga sayop Ma’am. It’s just that it’s my first day driving a Grab Car. You see, for the past 25 years, I’ve been driving a PORLON.” (naanad man gudang driver nga patay ang iyang pasahero)
It’s often scary or uncomfortable for most people to discuss death, but as Christians, we can discuss about death, we are not afraid of death because we have hope and joy that Jesus, our savior has overcome death. We have a living savior who will resurrect us from the dead.
We are going to study today, the words of Jesus that would remind us of his power and I believe it would give a reason to rejoice!
Go with me now to John 5:25-30. I have entitled this morning’ sermon “Rejoice for the Resurrection!”
What: Jesus gave a discourse in response to the Jewish leaders who are trying to kill Jesus because he claimed to be equal with God.
Why: To give clarity of His Divinity and why he is worthy of honor like the Father, not rejection and persecution.
We can rejoice for the resurrection because of the Unique Characteristic of Jesus as both the Son of God and Son of Man:

I. Jesus as the Son of God has the power to give life (vv.25-26)

Son of God - 9x in John
As Son of God - Jesus, like the Father is self-existent and has the power that God has - to give life! (John 1:4; Romans 11:36)
“An hour is coming and now is” - the present reality in the advent of Jesus. Jesus is talking about Spiritual Resurrection - here and in the present , accomplished through his life, death, and resurrection.
Eph 2:1-6 - We were spiritually dead but Jesus gives life (spiritual - now)
Application:
1. Place your faith in the finished worked of Jesus Christ on the Cross, for he alone has the power to give you a new life!

II. Jesus as the Son of Man has the authority to execute judgment (vv.27-29)

Son of Man - 12x in John
As Son of Man - Jesus is the ultimate judge of all mankind. Why?
Jesus is God-man who entered fully into human life, experienced temptations and trials, and knows what it is to be human.
As Son of Man - Jesus fulfills the prophecy in Daniel 7:14
Daniel 7:14 NASB95
14 “And to Him was given dominion, Glory and a kingdom, That all the peoples, nations and men of every language Might serve Him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion Which will not pass away; And His kingdom is one Which will not be destroyed.
v.28 Here, Jesus is talking about the general (all) physical Resurrection - future (end time), upon the return of Jesus.
2 Resurrections - good deeds to resurrection of life, evil deeds to a resurrection of judgment. Jesus as just God will punish the violators.
Deed? Salvation by works ni? While works do not save, they provide the basis for divine judgment because those deeds manifests the condition of the heart
Luke 6:45 “45 “The good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth what is good; and the evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth what is evil; for his mouth speaks from that which fills his heart.”
You’re not saved by your deeds; you’re revealed by your deeds. Deeds make a difference in judgment. Every deed will count.
Timothy Keller
We are saved by faith alone, but not by a faith that is alone. True faith results in good deeds, including adherence to the moral law of God.
James Montgomery Boice
Good deeds? Believers of Christ walks in newness of life (delights in good deeds) - Romans 6:3–5 “3 Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death? 4 Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection,”
Application:
1. Pursue good deeds because you are saved.
How? Show the fruit of the spirit in the way you live!
Matthew 5:1–10 (NASB95)
3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. 5 “Blessed are the gentle, for they shall inherit the earth. 6 “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. 7 “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy. 8 “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. 9 “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. 10 “Blessed are those who have been persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
the characteristic of the people belonging to the kingdom of God

III. Jesus works in harmony with the Father (v.30)

Jesus gives life and judgment in obedience to the Father because they are one and united.
Both Jesus and the Father are one in desire and will.
Every operation that extends from God to the creation, has its origin from the Father, and proceeds through the Son, and is perfected in the Holy Spirit. - St. Gregory on Nyssa.
Both Jesus and the Father is worthy of honor.
Application:
Give Jesus the honor that He deserved - worship and praise!
Conclusion:
It is a sad reality that there are some people who don’t believe in the resurrection of the dead and because of that they have not prepared for eternity. They have not believed in Jesus and they have continued living their lives thinking that there are no consequences to their sins and evil deeds.
Brethren, if you have heard the Gospel and have believed in Jesus and are living in the Light, tell those who are in darkness that they have to prepare when they still have time. They have to believe in Jesus and repent from their evil deeds!
Brethren, if you really understand the gravity of the resurrection, fulfill the great commission with courage and joy… through the strength from Christ!
“No Christian has made significant progress who does not eagerly anticipate the day of their death and resurrection.” - John Calvin
- The Apostles - progress in sanctification and mission - they were transformed (coward to courage) and they were willing to die because of their belief in resurrection- made a significant impact to the world.
⁃ The Missionaries - Jim Elliot, William Carey, David Livingstone - eager for the resurrection. made a significant impact to the world.
They left the world with joy in their hearts because they know that Christ awaits them on the other side of the door!
They were not afraid to die, they were willing to die because they believe in a living savior!
The resurrection must be a source of hope and joy for us, for whatever illness, sufferings, trials that we go through in this world - when death comes - we will be welcomed by our heavenly Father.
The resurrection must be a source of hope and joy for us, for when we die, we will be able to see our loved ones again in the new heaven and new earth!
Let us rejoice for the Resurrection!
