Deepen our relationship with God (Dennis Norby)

What it is NOT:

1. Mysticism/Magic/superstition
Colossians 2:11–14 ESV
11 In him also you were circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, 12 having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the powerful working of God, who raised him from the dead. 13 And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, 14 by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross.
Adolph Koberle, The Quest for Holiness
Sanctification of soul (mysticism), of thought ()
The Good News: We don’t have to go up on a ladder. Jesus has come down to us.
Koberle defines mysticism as believing that divinity lies in the hidden streams within our heart.
What’s in your heart? Sin.
Good news: God changes your heart.
Colossians 2:6 ESV
6 Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him,
If you want to grow deeper, stay there ALWAYS.
“His mills grind slowly.” -ancient saying
If you want to grow deeper in your relationship with Christ it takes time.
The Christian life is a life of faith from beginning to end. Keep looking to Christ and you will be established.
Colossians 2:7 ESV
7 rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.
Deepening our relationship with God is not our work.
To receive something is to be given something.
“For them” and “for you”
The Lord’s Supper
God’s Word given to you.
Keep holding fast to Christ for you.
Rooted
Psalm 1:3 ESV
3 He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.
Built
Established
This is a courtroom metaphor. To have standing.
All of these things are done to you. They are passive. He does this for you.
Take time. Make use of the means God has given you. Listen to this Word. It tells us of the Great Jesus. It tells us of His work for us.
Philippians 1:6 ESV
6 And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.
Deepening our relationship has to do with faith… in Jesus Christ, not in faith, or works, or anything else.
The Christian walks in the way pleasing to God by grace through faith.
Ephesians 2:8–10 ESV
8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
Deepening our relationship with the God has to do with studying God’s Word.
Many of us have had the privilege of growing up in a Christian home, being rooted/taught in the Word of God and established in the faith.
Established in “the” faith (ESV) not “your” faith (NASB)
It isn’t about you. Look more to Jesus and what He has done.
Illustration of being afraid of swimming deeper in the pool.
When we go deeper, Jesus is the one who takes us there, and He will take care of you there.
Jordan Langness
“May you become covered in the dust of your Rabbi.”
As trees go up they grow down.
Where do trees get their
through carbon (the building blocks of life) from the air received by photosynthesis.
Like being surrounded by the Spirit (air)
