Good morning
Missing Announcements:
Special welcome to the first time guest
My name is Zach Wells if we haven’t had the chance to meet and I’m excited to be here before you
I’m not John (he’s actually at a DNOW and will be back for our One27@Night Kickoff tonight)
This morning is a bit of an extension of last week if you were here, and I hope that you guys are ready to talk today… instead of me just teaching up here for 40ish minutes you guys are going to be able to walk through this passage in Philippians 2 with one another.
Before we jump in though, let’s pray…
5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus,
Which mind? ~ We have to go back and read v.1-4
1 So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, 2 complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. 3 Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. 4 Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.
Have a mindset that is others focused, selfless, and invites the outsider.
V.5 is clear too, that you have this mind if you are in Christ Jesus because His Spirit which is selfless lives inside of you..
Here’s what I want you to do, take time to look up and read aloud at your groups different translations and I want you to grab just one partner and explain v.5 to them as if they don’t have regular access to the Bible or doesn’t know Jesus…
What does it mean to have Christ’s mindset?
How do we have the same mindset as Christ?
How do we display this in our relationships with one another?
Let’s continue:
5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
Verses 6-8 describe the humility of Jesus. This is our ultimate example.
V.6: Hypostatic Union : 100% God yet 100% Man yet was humble enough to submit to His Father’s will (yet in some regard is His will as well LOL)
Never get over this fact about Jesus
V.7: God didn’t have to be born in the likeness of men, He could’ve chosen a different pathway for salvation but God became a servant to sympathize with us…
We have an all powerful God but also a God who relates to us like none other
V.8 He took death upon Himself in our place to satisfy the wrath of God… this isn’t a very widely held view shockingly but that’s what Jesus’ death did. God has wrath against sin and Jesus (if you are a believer) took upon that wrath for you.
What I want you guys to do is fill out the blanks as a table… so if Adam was made in God’s image, Jesus is… there isn’t the perfect answer I’m looking for but you guys walk through this and if you are overachievers try to find verses that correlate with each of these that you have.
was made in God’s image. ~ was and is the very essence of God.
wanted to be like God ~ took on the likeness of man.
wanted to exalt himself ~ emptied Himself.
was discontent being God’s servant ~ assumed the form of a slave.
arrogantly rejected God’s word in sinful disobedience ~ humbly submitted to God’s word in perfect obedience.
succumbed to temptation ~ overcame temptation; crushed the tempter.
brought the curse on the world ~took the curse for the world.
was condemned and disgraced ~ was exalted by the Father.
Talk about the answers given
How can you go from being more like Adam to more like Jesus? In other words, how can you practically live out John 3:30?
“He must become great, I must become less (John 3:30)”
Discuss around your table… be practical don’t give surface level answers.
9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Verses 9-11 show Christ’s position and our right response. Declaring Jesus as Lord in the 1st century also meant denouncing Caesar as Lord.
You were living against the grain of culture if you pronounced that Jesus was your Lord, and we don’t really experience this here in Texas at ALL
Here being “Christian” is the culture, but also if we are honest… if you are truly living out your faith as a Christian here in TX, you will more likely than not stand out… if you are sharing your faith regularly, practicing discipleship, and committing your life to the bride of Christ
Question: Knowing that every knee will bow to Jesus as Lord one day (v.10),
what are some ways you can practice this now? (give time to share)
Secondly is this, what areas of your life is Jesus not Lord of yet… a lot of us like the idea of Jesus being our Savior but not our Lord… we want the assurance of salvation but not the unknown discomforts that might cost us in this life… so what areas of your life have you not fully surrendered to Jesus yet?
What would a life fully surrender to Jesus this semester look like? Zoom in on just this semester…
To close:
Who’s one person who needs Jesus in your life? What are you actively doing right now for them? What can you be doing for them… be practical.
How can someone be praying for you? & then actually pray
