The Crucifixion

We learned last week from Jamo that Pilate actually did not want Jesus blood on his hands but for the sake of pleasing man he allowed for it to happen showing us just because everyone else thinking something is right dose not make it right,
Upon sentence the person was scourged and then executed. Which means to be whipped, they actually did double the normal amount, if we flip over to Matthew we read more about happened that day.
Matthew 27:27–31 ESV
Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the governor’s headquarters, and they gathered the whole battalion before him. And they stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him, and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on his head and put a reed in his right hand. And kneeling before him, they mocked him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” And they spit on him and took the reed and struck him on the head. And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the robe and put his own clothes on him and led him away to crucify him.
So after all of this we see Jesus all whipped and beaten, his back is all lashed and then has to put at least a 175 pound cross on it and travel to his final destination.
The Crucifixition was intended to humiliate the person as much as possible to draw attention to the condemned and thier crime. There would have been people all on the sides of the road watching and chanting essentially a parade to his own funeral.
He goes to the place known as Golgotha in aracmaic in english it would translate over to calvary.
V18 this was a pretty brutal picture I mean they drove nails through his wrists and ankles, then hung him up imagine how much that would have hurt when they drop the cross in the hole.
Then on either side we see two other criminals and we know from Lukes gospel that one actually one of them sort of mocks Jesus and kinda says okay miracle boy if you really are the messiah get us off these crosses.
While the other actually rebukes the first criminal and says Jesus will you remember me when when you come into your kingdom?
Dose any one what Jesus Says to respond.
He tells him” Truly i tell you, today you will be with me in paradise”
We see that he is saved by faith alone, not a baptism not by being a good person but by simple faith alone.
We also see all of humanity represented here the sinless saviour, the one who is saved by faith. and those who choose to reject Jesus.
V19 So typially the criminal would have this plaque carried with them listing off the crime they had commited, But Pilate writes, “ Jesus of nazareth king of the jews.” because he could find no wrong in Jesus;
V21 We see that the chief priests did not like that because he didnt want people to believe he was the messiah. Rather he wanted to people to think this is why we are crucifying him.
V22 But romans and priests aren't exactly fond of each other so Pilate likely says out of spite I have written what ive written. and where they crucified Jesus was next to a public road so many would have seen this.
V23-24 we see a prohecy being fufilled from Psalm 22 and I want to highlight that this is the difference between Christianity and any other religon is the amount of prophecies that we have.
25-27 Even on the cross Jesus is still thinking of others, In particular here his mom.He says woman as a show of endearment, remember this word, was used differntly in this time,
He essentially tells John take care of my mom, mary is a widow at this time and likely older in age,
28-29 we see Jesus fulfilling another prohecy showing us that Jesus is still controlling what is going on here,
30 We get problay the greatest words man kind has ever heard it is finished, notice how Jesus chooses to give up his won spirit no one take it from him yet he chose when.
But God the creator stepped down into creation to the lowest of low so low to the point he was naked on a cross, in order that we may be able to be forgiven our sin,
This act alone should feul us all to want to surrender our lives to him in verything that we do.
Why dose the story of the Cross motivate you?
