This morning, we’re here to grieve the loss of Hannah Joy, Eva Ruth, and Elijah Daniel Robinson. We’re here because their lives were very special, and they were very loved. During their short lives, they were prayed for and celebrated, and they will be always be remembered and cherished. That’s what makes today so difficult. We want them here with us. Their mom and dad and grandparents want to hold them and rock them. And, the comfort that we have is that we don’t face this alone. God draws near to the brokenhearted, and He walks with us in our suffering.

Psalm 23 ESV
A Psalm of David. The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

In the days ahead, you will no doubt have a range of emotions, thoughts, and questions. God invites you to bring them honestly before him and to express them to him. Use the words of David in the psalms of lament when you don’t have the words yourself.

Psalm 77:1–4 ESV
I cry aloud to God, aloud to God, and he will hear me. In the day of my trouble I seek the Lord; in the night my hand is stretched out without wearying; my soul refuses to be comforted. When I remember God, I moan; when I meditate, my spirit faints. Selah You hold my eyelids open; I am so troubled that I cannot speak.

As you grieve, grieve with the hope that is found in Jesus’ resurrection. Hannah Joy, Eva Ruth, and Elijah Daniel are with the Lord.

2 Corinthians 4:7–18 ESV
But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us. We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies. For we who live are always being given over to death for Jesus’ sake, so that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh. So death is at work in us, but life in you. Since we have the same spirit of faith according to what has been written, “I believed, and so I spoke,” we also believe, and so we also speak, knowing that he who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus and bring us with you into his presence. For it is all for your sake, so that as grace extends to more and more people it may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God. So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.

Today, it’s impossible to see past the tears that you’ve cried and the pain that you’ve felt. But, the Gospel promises that your suffering will not last. One day, you will cry for your precious little ones for the last time. You will join them and enjoy Jesus’ presence with them forever.

Revelation 21:1–4 ESV
Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”

Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!
