David’s Notes

Overview of the movie/story.
Any backstory about the move?
Directors/producers statements.
Statements from anyone involved?

Good message:

Our lives should not be dictated by the approval of others.
54:40 - What ralph really wanted: “the medal was going to change all of that for me.”
Ralph realized he didn’t need the medal.
Penelope realized she was happy with her glitch.
The movie stops short.
Who then should it be dictated by?
The movie doesn’t give an answer.
The real answer is God that “in Christ we have nothing to prove and no one to impress.
Galatians 1:10 ESV
For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.
The value of friendship.

Where it deviates:

Message: “I should affirm and embrace who I am.”
Where do we see this? 6:30 - 7:00 - “I’m bad, and that’s good.” Affirmation.
The message: “You must be who you are.”
This phrase came back at the climax scene of the movie and Ralph said it again.
Yes and no
Yes, in that…
God created you in his image.
God made you with a personality.
He made you unique and with a purpose.
When you come to Christ, you are given a Spiritual gift to add value to the body of Christ. Rom. 12:6-7
Romans 12:4–7 ESV
For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching;
We should be content with our lot in life and have gratitude for it.
No, in that…
We are sinful and should not celebrate our brokenness.
Rather our brokenness and awareness of sin should drive us to see our need for Jesus to save us.
We are called to repent of our sin and receive forgiveness from it, never to celebrate the sinful parts of us. God wants to change us, not leave us the way we are. Rom. 12:1-2, Rom. 8:29, 2 Cor. 5:17
2 Corinthians 5:17 ESV
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.
Romans 8:29 ESV
For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.
Romans 12:1–2 ESV
I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
So, the phrase, “I’m bad and thats good,” is quite contrary to the Biblical perspective.
The deep question this movie is trying to answer is this, “How am I to think about myself?”
Without the gospel, our awareness of our badness will either…
Lead us to despair
Lead us to embrace it: Justify it or be numb to it.
Lead us to denial, “I’m bad and that’s good.”
With the gospel, we can look it in the face and say, “I’m bad, and that’s bad. But Jesus saved me from the condemnation for my badness. I am forever forgiven and am now a child of God.”
Romans 5:8 ESV
but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
1 John 1:9 ESV
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Romans 8:1 ESV
There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

How it points to Christ:

Was Wreck-it Ralph able to change? We see that he wasn’t actually bad.
Points to the Christ narrative
To save his friend Penelope he…
Left his place of safety.
Penelope was stuck, with no hope.
Ralph used his strength in one last effort to save Penelope and the game.
The enemy thought he had conquered Ralph and Panelope, but he did not.
Look at Christ’s sacrificial love. John 15:13, 1 John 3:16
1 John 3:16 ESV
By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers.
John 15:13 ESV
Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.
