Hunger and Thirst: the Pursuit of Godliness
Holiness/Purity/Consecration/
Psalm 51:1–6 “1 Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. 2 Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin! 3 For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. 4 Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you may be justified in your words and blameless in your judgment. 5 Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me. 6 Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being, and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart.”
What is holiness- status of being set apart
“Mom’s favorite china” has a special place in the function of the household. It is not used for “dirty jobs”
Greek- Hagios
There is a line that we cross when we come to Jesus.
God draws that line.
God may work on one issue at a time
He may work on a different issue in you than in me
Our job is not to point out fault in each other, but to encourage one another and wait patiently while we grow in sanctification.
The call to Purity
The call to Purity
27 Religion that is pure and undefiled before God the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.
19 But God’s firm foundation stands, bearing this seal: “The Lord knows those who are his,” and, “Let everyone who names the name of the Lord depart from iniquity.”
14 Do all things without grumbling or disputing, 15 that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, 16 holding fast to the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain.
1 Peter 1:13–19 “13 Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 14 As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, 15 but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 16 since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.” 17 And if you call on him as Father who judges impartially according to each one’s deeds, conduct yourselves with fear throughout the time of your exile, 18 knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot.”
the Abuse of “Purity”
the Abuse of “Purity”
punitive and coercive attempts to control the behavior of others (shovel)
a means of deflection: my shame= your burden of obedience
the Purpose of Purity (Holiness)
the Purpose of Purity (Holiness)
not to obtain moral perfection
to experience consecration for the sake of relationship
(vs legal standing)
The Process of Cleansing
The Process of Cleansing
Psalm 51:7–12 “7 Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. 8 Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones that you have broken rejoice. 9 Hide your face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities. 10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. 11 Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me. 12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit.”
