Can you be religious and not righteous?
Can you be righteous and not religious?
Can you be righteous and not religious?
Some would say yes - I’m spiritual and not interested in organized religion
We will dive into that at another time
Religious: Living, worshiping and practicing in accordance to the belief system of that particular religion.

Paul in Athens
So Paul, standing in the midst of the Areopagus, said: “Men of Athens, I perceive that in every way you are very religious. For as I passed along and observed the objects of your worship, I found also an altar with this inscription: ‘To the unknown god.’ What therefore you worship as unknown, this I proclaim to you.
And they took the bull that was given them, and they prepared it and called upon the name of Baal from morning until noon, saying, “O Baal, answer us!” But there was no voice, and no one answered. And they limped around the altar that they had made. And at noon Elijah mocked them, saying, “Cry aloud, for he is a god. Either he is musing, or he is relieving himself, or he is on a journey, or perhaps he is asleep and must be awakened.” And they cried aloud and cut themselves after their custom with swords and lances, until the blood gushed out upon them.
Saul of Tarsus
circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; as to the law, a Pharisee; as to zeal, a persecutor of the church; as to righteousness under the law, blameless.
And looking intently at the council, Paul said, “Brothers, I have lived my life before God in all good conscience up to this day.”
“I myself was convinced that I ought to do many things in opposing the name of Jesus of Nazareth. And I did so in Jerusalem. I not only locked up many of the saints in prison after receiving authority from the chief priests, but when they were put to death I cast my vote against them.
How did Paul now view his religiosity
though formerly I was a blasphemer, persecutor, and insolent opponent. But I received mercy because I had acted ignorantly in unbelief,
The saying is trustworthy and worthy of all acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost.
Paul provides the solution to being religious but not righteous
We have family and friends that worship on a regular basis with great dedication
Co-worker who was a devout Catholic
Brothers, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for them is that they may be saved. For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. For, being ignorant of the righteousness of God, and seeking to establish their own, they did not submit to God’s righteousness.

They tie up heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on people’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to move them with their finger. They do all their deeds to be seen by others. For they make their phylacteries broad and their fringes long,
“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and cumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness. These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others.
In Acts 5 Ananias and Sapphira Lie to the Holy Spirit
Rich Young Ruler
And behold, a man came up to him, saying, “Teacher, what good deed must I do to have eternal life?”
He is a religious, sincere man - Was He Righteous?
Church in Ephesus in Rev 2.
“To the angel of the church in Ephesus write: ‘The words of him who holds the seven stars in his right hand, who walks among the seven golden lampstands. “ ‘I know your works, your toil and your patient endurance, and how you cannot bear with those who are evil, but have tested those who call themselves apostles and are not, and found them to be false. I know you are enduring patiently and bearing up for my name’s sake, and you have not grown weary.
But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first.
Righteousness is a position / or state you are placed in by God’s Grace, Mercy and the blood of Jesus Christ and your acceptance through obedience to the Gospel

Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God.
So Jesus also suffered outside the gate in order to sanctify the people through his own blood.
