The Gospel

Three circles explained.
God’s Design
Brokenness
Gospel
The gospel is the good news of Jesus coming to die for our sins, in our place, receiving the wrath and punishment we deserve, and exchanging his righteousness for our sin. Jesus lived a righteous life, died, resurrected, and then ascended into heaven where he is preparing a place for us.
We were created perfect in God’s image. Genesis 1:26-27.
Being made in his likeness is Relational, Representative, and Functional.
Being made after his likeness allows you to have communion with God.
Being made after his likeness gives you qualities that God has such as knowing right and wrong.
Being made in his image means there’s a responsibility to ultimately glorify God.
2. Sin Has Distorted this image. Adam and Eve sinned and because of their sin all humanity suffered the consequences. Genesis 3.
3. We all deserved death and the wrath of God because of our sin. None of us could meet God’s holy standards. Romans 3:23
Romans 3:23 ESV
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
4. God sent his son to live the righteous life we can’t live.
Matthew 5:17
Matthew 5:17 ESV
17 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.
5. The great exchange of my sin for his righteousness through repentance and faith in Jesus.
Romans 5:17–19 ESV
17 For if, because of one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ. 18 Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men. 19 For as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous.
6. God is restoring us to his original design.
Romans 8:21–22 ESV
21 that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. 22 For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now.
Romans 8:2 ESV
2 For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.

Who is Jesus?

Jesus was a historical figure. Not a fictional character. There is evidence to support he was a real person who walked among us. Internally and externally.
Josephus - Jewish Historian.

Jesus Claimed to be God.

1. The Jews wanted to kill him because he said I and the father are one. He is claiming to be of the same nature as the father. God.
John 10:30–33 ESV
30 I and the Father are one.” 31 The Jews picked up stones again to stone him. 32 Jesus answered them, “I have shown you many good works from the Father; for which of them are you going to stone me?” 33 The Jews answered him, “It is not for a good work that we are going to stone you but for blasphemy, because you, being a man, make yourself God.”
He is claiming to have existed before Abraham, and using the name God uses with Moses at the burning bush.
Exodus 3:14 ESV
14 God said to Moses, “I am who I am.” And he said, “Say this to the people of Israel: ‘I am has sent me to you.’ ”
John 8:58 ESV
58 Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.”
Because of these claims the people wanted to kill Jesus.
Mark 14:61–64 ESV
61 But he remained silent and made no answer. Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?” 62 And Jesus said, “I am, and you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven.” 63 And the high priest tore his garments and said, “What further witnesses do we need? 64 You have heard his blasphemy. What is your decision?” And they all condemned him as deserving death.

Jesus Never Sinned

Why was this important?
A Sacrifice needed to be perfect and flawless before God so that he can accept it.
1 Peter 2:22 ESV
22 He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth.
Hebrews 4:14–16 ESV
14 Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
Colossians 2:9 ESV
9 For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily,
Hebrews 1:3 ESV
3 He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,

Jesus was Human

1. Jesus was born like a human.
Luke 2:7 ESV
7 And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.
2. Jesus grew in knowledge like a human
Luke 2:52 ESV
52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and man.
3. Jesus had emotions like a human.
John 11:35 ESV
35 Jesus wept.
Matthew 26:38 ESV
38 Then he said to them, “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and watch with me.”
Jesus experienced anxiety, sadness, sorrow, pain, fear, and all the emotions we have.
4. Jesus also experienced temptation like a human.
Matthew 4:1 ESV
1 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.
Hebrews 4:15 ESV
15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.
5. Jesus experienced physical torture.
John 19:1 ESV
1 Then Pilate took Jesus and flogged him.
Matthew 27:29 ESV
29 and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on his head and put a reed in his right hand. And kneeling before him, they mocked him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!”
6. Jesus experienced public humiliation.
His private parts were exposed as a punishment for his crimes.
Matthew 27:28 ESV
28 And they stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him,
The Roman Crucifixion was the most terrible way to die. These men had no heart and no pitty for the criminals.
7. Jesus also experienced Death:
John 19:30 ESV
30 When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

Why was it necessary for Jesus to be fully God and fully man?

Because as a man he fully identifies with us. God required a man to obey all of his law. To be perfect. And no other man can do this except him. This righteous living was accepted by God when he offers himself as a sacrifice.
And as God he can satisfy the eternal wrath of God. Because our punishment is eternal and God is eternal. Our deserved punishment was eternal. Therefore this sacrifice needed to have eternal value. Jesus was eternal, but he was also man. His sacrifice on the cross was sufficient to satisfy the wrath of God.

What is Faith?

Faith is assurance and conviction:
Hebrews 11:1 ESV
1 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.
When we have conviction that Jesus is real and he is my savior, It will produce works in us.
Faith is a free gift of God:
Ephesians 2:8–9 ESV
8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast.

Faith is Backed by Works

Ephesians 2:10 ESV
10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
James 2:17 ESV
17 So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.

Faith is a Relationship

James 4:8 ESV
8 Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
Pray to him
read bible
fellowship with other believers.

Faith is Transformative

Romans 8:29 ESV
29 For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.
Romans 12:1–2 ESV
1 I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. 2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
