Intro
Animal guessing game with Christian. He didn’t know certain details about animals. Hard to guess.
Need: Not understand who Jesus is.
Main Idea: Jesus is who he claims to be
Not clear instruction in genealogy, but we must determine why it’s there. Differences between Matthew and Luke. First is number of people. Matthew wrote stylistically. 3 groups of 14. Luke’s account is less style and more accurate. Different names. I’m going to go into that later in the sermon. Rehashing OT stories.
Luke 3:21-38
Truth #1: He is the Messiah
Exp. First we have the baptism. Verse 21-22. JB was baptizing by the Jordan and he baptizes Jesus as well. Three major signs of Jesus’ baptism:
His Baptism - Not a sign of repentance, but one of anointing. His ministry began after this. What was his ministry? Fulfillment of righteousness. Matthew 3:15
Matthew 3:15 ESV
But Jesus answered him, “Let it be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he consented.
Descent of the Holy Spirit - Descended like a dove. Literally in bodily form. Where else do we see a dove over water? Genesis 8:8-9
Genesis 8:8–9 ESV
Then he sent forth a dove from him, to see if the waters had subsided from the face of the ground. But the dove found no place to set her foot, and she returned to him to the ark, for the waters were still on the face of the whole earth. So he put out his hand and took her and brought her into the ark with him.
Genesis 1:2 ESV
The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.
HS was at creation, peace above waters of chaos. With Noah, peace above waters and flood. At baptism, peace above waters of baptism. Representing Christ taking God’s wrath on himself. Messiah.
Voice of God from heaven - God, who has been silent, speaks now to Jesus. The entire Trinity is involved. Well pleased = satisfied. Righteousness. He can only give what he has. If he is savior, it means we need one.
Ill. You are given what you need. I won’t put an epi pen in my leg unless I’m having an allergic reaction. God wouldn’t send a savior if we didn’t need one.
Arg. 2 Corinthians 5:18-21
2 Corinthians 5:18–21 ESV
18 All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; 19 that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. 20 Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. 21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
Christ - Jesus is the Messiah, savior.
App. Trust him as savior.
Believe you need a savior. You have sin and need a way back to God.
Believe it’s not you. Can’t be you.
Truth #2: He was human
Exp. Genealogies reveal family lines. Savior had a family tree. Lineage that dates all the way back God himself. Let’s read through some of this. Verse 23-27. Zerubbabel. Led Israel away from Babylon. Verse 31-34. Boaz, kinsman redeemer. Jacob, name changed to Israel. Wrestled with God. Isaac, son of the promise. Abraham, whose line would bless the nations. Verse 36-38. Noah, the flood. Adam, the son of God. Genealogy begins with Jesus and ends with God.
Arg. Why is it important? Two reasons:
He understands our needs. Hebrews 4:14-16
Hebrews 4:14–16 ESV
14 Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
He is the necessary sacrifice. Human sin caused the divide. Human sacrifice is needed to atone.
Ill. Take out a loan, they want money. If I try to give them my mountain bike, they won’t take it. Human sin brought division, and human sacrifice is required.
Christ - Human, meets our needs. Meets needs of loneliness, pain, temptation.
App. What do we do? Follow him.
Acknowledge his humanity. We dwell in divinity, but forget his humanity.
Relate to his suffering. You can put yourself in his suffering. Brings you peace when he says he would be with us.
Truth #3: He is king
Exp. Lastly, we see the genealogy points to his royalty. Several kings mentioned. None greater than David. Verse 31. God promised his throne would last forever. Jesus ushers in the eternal kingdom. NT writers agree.
Arg. Revelation 1:5-6
Revelation 1:5–6 ESV
5 and from Jesus Christ the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of kings on earth. To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood 6 and made us a kingdom, priests to his God and Father, to him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.
1 Timothy 6:14–15 ESV
14 to keep the commandment unstained and free from reproach until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15 which he will display at the proper time—he who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords,
John 18:36 ESV
36 Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting, that I might not be delivered over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from the world.”
Christ - King, sovereign. We live in his kingdom. All that we see is his. All that we have is his.
App. What do we do? Give him your allegiance.
Trust in his sovereignty. Over periods and times of leadership. Rulers, etc.
Trust him with your life. He has a plan put into motion from the beginning.
Conclusion
Believe in the savior, believe in his humanity, believe in his kingship.
