The Encouraging word
The Encouraging word
Imagine you're having a terrible day. You failed a test, forgot your homework, and your best friend isn't talking to you. Then, as you're walking down the hall, someone says, 'Hey, you’re really good at that art project. You inspire me!' Suddenly, you feel a little lighter. That one sentence shifted your whole mood, didn’t it
The Hurtful Word
The Hurtful Word
Now think about a time when someone said something unkind to you. Maybe it was a comment about your appearance or something you worked hard on. Those words stuck with you, didn’t they? They echoed in your mind long after the person walked away.
The Power of the Tongue
The Power of the Tongue
The Tongue and Teaching
The Tongue and Teaching
James 3:1 “Not many should become teachers, my brothers, because you know that we will receive a stricter judgment.”
James starts here pointing out that teaching has the power to guide and miss guide
However, it is the underling problem that he wants to address
Tongue and Spiritual life
Tongue and Spiritual life
James 3:2 “For we all stumble in many ways. If anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is mature, able also to control the whole body.”
“We all stumble in many ways” —> None of us are perfect
The tongue is a crucial—and often deadly—part of the body.
It’s like a master switch.
Take command of it, and you have the potential for bringing your spiritual life under control.
James 3:3–4 “Now if we put bits into the mouths of horses so that they obey us, we direct their whole bodies. And consider ships: Though very large and driven by fierce winds, they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs.”
What the tongue does can have great effect
What the tongue does can have great effect
James 3:5–6 “So too, though the tongue is a small part of the body, it boasts great things. Consider how a small fire sets ablaze a large forest. And the tongue is a fire. The tongue, a world of unrighteousness, is placed among our members. It stains the whole body, sets the course of life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.”
The destructive nature of it
Some individuals started gossip fires years ago, and the flames are still burning
It can destroy self-esteem, devastate relationships, ruin a career, and kill a ministry
Can be used as a weapon
The sin of man as it relates to his speech:
Romans 3:13–14 “Their throat is an open grave; they deceive with their tongues. Vipers’ venom is under their lips. Their mouth is full of cursing and bitterness.”
James 3:8 “but no one can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.”
The Tongue and the Heart

Good and bad from tongue
Good and bad from tongue
James 3:9–10 “With the tongue we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in God’s likeness. Blessing and cursing come out of the same mouth. My brothers and sisters, these things should not be this way.”
a contradiction this should be
We live in a time were we are quick to speak negativity about others
God’s Creation not just other believers
James 3:11–12 “Does a spring pour out sweet and bitter water from the same opening? Can a fig tree produce olives, my brothers and sisters, or a grapevine produce figs? Neither can a saltwater spring yield fresh water.”
A fig tree cant produce olives is it is then it must be a olive tree

The Way to Wisdom
James 3:13–14 “Who among you is wise and understanding? By his good conduct he should show that his works are done in the gentleness that comes from wisdom. But if you have bitter envy and selfish ambition in your heart, don’t boast and deny the truth.”

The Fruit of Wisdom
The Fruit of Wisdom
James 3:15–18 “Such wisdom does not come down from above but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. For where there is envy and selfish ambition, there is disorder and every evil practice. But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peace-loving, gentle, compliant, full of mercy and good fruits, unwavering, without pretense. And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who cultivate peace.”
