V. 1-5 Jesus coming off a confrontation with the Pharisees reiterates that He is the light of the world. This time He does so by healing a man who had been born blind. It wasn’t a personal sin that caused this blindness and it wouldn’t be a good work that healed him. This man was blind for this moment. So that Jesus might prove who He is and bring glory to God.
V. 6-7 The way Jesus heals the man is pretty gross. He spits in the dirt and mixes it into mud. They He wipes it on the guys eyes and tells the man to wash in the pool of Siloam.
V. 8-34 Everyone around the man is amazed at what has happened. It even garners the attention of the Pharisees who hate Jesus and everything He does. Hoping to find Him guilty of breaking the sabbath and hoping to remove a follower of Jesus from their synagogue the Pharisees question the blind man who can now see.
We see a couple things from this that are worth noting.
The simplicity of his testimony (V. 25)
All he knows is his experience. There were no fancy doctrines or creeds. All he knew was that Jesus changed his life.
The boldness of his testimony (V. 30-33)
He challenges the Pharisees claim boldly and presents an argument they can do nothing about.
The cost of his testimony (V. 34)
Being removed from the synagogue ment your relationship with God was cut off.
V. 35-38 Jesus wants to do more than just heal this mans physical blindness. He invites him have his eyes opened spiritually too. This man’s life is forever changed. The was the first time he saw the face of his Healer and it led him to worship.
Worship is the natural response to the presence of Jesus.
V. 39-41 Jesus closes this chapter with a warning. Being wise in our own eyes. Feeling like we are good enough and have no need for Jesus makes us spiritually blind. The pharisees were unable to see who Jesus was and what He was doing. They were unwilling to see because they were blind. The blind man wasn’t blind spiritually because he knew he needed the Son of Man. When Jesus revealed Himself to him the blind man saw and believed.
Questions:
Do you see and know Jesus? Has He changed your life or are you spiritually blind?
What is your testimony?
If Jesus has opened your eyes to His truth, how can you help other see Jesus for who He truly is?
Are you willing to take a stand for Christ even when it is costly?
