Months ago, we were watching college gameday on a Saturday morning and they were doing an interview of the Missouri head coach. Well in the same screen, there was a yellow robotic dog walking around the field. I mean I couldn't take my eyes off it because of what it was resembling. Spot, which is what they called it, could do everything you wanted it to. It could dance, sit, stand, roll over, do tricks! It was so fascinating that I had to look it up. Apparently, this is a well developed thing where you could order you a robotic dog today for less than 2k. I know that might sound like a lot of money but If you knew what a real one cost you wouldn't be shocked. I say all of that to say this, it mimicked everything of being alive, yet it was dead!
Not only robotic animals have the reputation of being alive, but yet dead, but a lot of churches today do as well. The lights may be on, there might be a lot of activity going on, there might be a lot of money coming in, there is a buzz in the community, it might really mimic being alive, but its dead.
All you have to do is go watch the inauguration and you can tell between the 5 or 6 that got up to pray what was alive and what was not. Franklin Graham and the Pastor from Detroit both just prayed heaven down. The others read prayers and it was dry!
I think it would be right, If we were to take a honest inventory of our church, what would Jesus say about our church?
Lets take a look into 3 ways we can examine our lives and live faithfully in the present and in the future!
1. Awaken from Apathy
1. Awaken from Apathy
And unto the angel of the church in Sardis write; These things saith he that hath the seven Spirits of God, and the seven stars; I know thy works, that thou hast a name that thou livest, and art dead. Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die: for I have not found thy works perfect before God.
Sardis was blessed with an abundance of gold in the Pactolus River in ancient times, adding to the power and wealth of the Lydian Empire. The city was centered on a high, steep acropolis jutting out from Mount Tmolus. It was the supreme setup! They had it all and then some!
BUT....their strength actually became their weakness.
You could highlight how these verses urge us to awaken from spiritual lethargy. Despite having a reputation for life, the church in Sardis was spiritually dead. The call to 'wake up' is a reminder to evaluate our spiritual state honestly and strive for an authentic connection with Christ. It's an encouragement to not rest on past achievements but pursue continuous spiritual growth through Christ, who is the source of true life.

Remember therefore how thou hast received and heard, and hold fast, and repent. If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee.

Perhaps, emphasize the importance of remembering and holding fast to the teachings of Christ. This verse suggests that the antidote to spiritual slumber is a return to the foundational truths of the Gospel. Reflect on how recalling and faithfully obeying Christ's teachings can reignite our faith. The verse serves as a warning to be vigilant, as unexpected judgment awaits those who neglect their spiritual responsibilities.
3. Rewarding the Relationship
3. Rewarding the Relationship
Thou hast a few names even in Sardis which have not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with me in white: for they are worthy. He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels. He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.
Maybe, draw attention to the promise of walking with Christ for those who remain steadfast. These verses offer hope and assurance to the faithful, emphasizing that true life and victory is found in Christ. It suggests that genuine faith leads to intimate fellowship with Jesus. Encouraging the congregation, this passage reassures them that living a vibrant, Christ-centered life results in eternal recognition and joy with God.
