1st that paul mentioned
pastor is to act as the shepherd to the flock
Fundamental role
Biblical term for someone who watches over is an “overseer”
Those who admonish you: the Greek word: “to put in mind” - it means to warn, to caution you
Paul is reminding us in the body of Christ that we need to be esteeming those who have that responsibility
Verse 13: esteem them, highly, in love
It’s not about their title, but what they do
be at peace among yourselves
To allow the peace of Christ to rule among our relationships - peace among you
Peace requires both parties to want to be at peace - one party can be it very hard
Romans 12:18 as far as it depends on you, it will not be possible to have peace with everyone. But you don’t have to reciprocate with someone challenging.
Greek word interpreted as: idle, lazy, irresponsible - used only here and 2 Thessalonians
people used to live communely - share because you want to, not because you have to
this was a problem in the early church. Some were taking advantage of the group and lazy.
10 Even while we were with you, we gave you this command: “Those unwilling to work will not get to eat.”
People need encouragement who worry
Weakness is people who are weak in faith - wishy-washy
All of these character traits require patience. Not everyone is gifted to work people in the church on these different things. Some people are more visionaries.
There are people who want to do wrong to Christians, but that does not give us the right to respond negatively.
Do good, not just to people in the body of Christ, but to everyone.
19 Dear friends, never take revenge. Leave that to the righteous anger of God. For the Scriptures say,
“I will take revenge;
I will pay them back,”
says the Lord.
20 Instead,
“If your enemies are hungry, feed them.
If they are thirsty, give them something to drink.
In doing this, you will heap
burning coals of shame on their heads.”
21 Don’t let evil conquer you, but conquer evil by doing good.
verse 16:
rejoice always
Romans 5:2-5
because of that we can rejoice in the hard times knowing what is being produced in us even in the difficult times. It’s okay to acknowledge it’s difficult. You are not alone. God is with you.
Pray without ceasing
Obviously you can’t kneel down close your eyes and pray all day long
Talking to God normally throughout the day
Give thanks IN all circumstances (not thanks for the circumstances)
We can do this because we serve a sovereign God.
God controls all circumstances
Bible verse: acknowledge Him in all of his ways
Do not put out the Spirits fire
We quench the Spirit whenever our actions or attitudes are contrary to the actions of the Holy Spirit
Peter removed people from the room before asking God to bring them back to life because unbelief can quench the Spirit
We need the Holy Spirit to work in us and for us to minister to others.
Without the Holy Spirit we are left with the flesh of man
The flesh of man cannot bring about life, only death. The flesh counts for nothing.
verse 20:
Do not despise prophetic utterances, but test everything
He’s talking about words of prophecy given now.
Do not walk in an attitude of disdain.
God has gifted certain individuals in the church to speak prophetically. If we stop respecting the gift we can miss what the Lord is trying to tell us.
Some people believe that the biblical revelation in the form of prophecy has ceased.
The Bible is done being written. And that’s why we have to test everything. Measure it by the standard of God’s Word.
The Word alone is enough, but there are times when the Holy Spirit decides to speak into someone and give guidance and insight to someone and people.
Speak the truth in love
Often we speak the truth but not out of love and we cut people down
Sanctification
Paul prays may the God of peace sanctify you. It’s something you do. Paul says “He will do it.”
