Good morning Life Church -
Stand with me as we read together the Word of the Lord to us today.
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me,
Because He anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor.
He has sent Me to proclaim release to the captives,
And recovery of sight to the blind,
To set free those who are oppressed,
To proclaim the favorable year of the Lord.”

TODAY WE START A NEW SERIES

The Gospel of Luke - REVEALING THE TRIUNE GOD IN THE PERSON OF JESUS.
This series will take us all the way to Easter April 20th.
The goal of this series is two fold.
Knowing the Triune God through Jesus
Identifying how we must worship Him in response to His revelation of the Father, Himself, and the Spirit.

We will be starting in Luke chapter 4
We just finished Christmas season
And we have discussed the Epiphany of Jesus to the wisemen of the East.

LETS GET A BIRDS EYE VIEW OF CHAPTER 3 AND 4 AND THEN WE WILL ZOOM IN ON VERSES 14-21.

Jesus is baptized by his cousin John the Baptist in the Jordan river.
The Holy Spirit descends on Jesus like a Dove.
Here the Spirit anoints Jesus for His ministry to God and for Humanity and reveals His true identity.
and the Holy Spirit descended upon Him in bodily form like a dove, and a voice came out of heaven, “You are My beloved Son, in You I am well-pleased.”
Then the Spirit of God leads Jesus into the wilderness to be tested by Satan.
SATAN OFFERS THREE TEMPTATIONS TO JESUS.
Use your power to feed yourself - think about you and your needs first not the mission of God. - Man shall not live on bread alone but every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.”
I will give you this land, the people, and the glory of it all, if you will bow before me. Jesus responds - You shall worship the Lord your God and serve Him alone.
Throw yourself of the temple, let them all see you as your Father sends angels to catch you. prove to them now through power, who you are. Jesus responds - You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.
WE WILL SEE THE DISTINCTION OF THE MISSION OF GOD COMPARED TO THESE TEMPTATIONS IN A SHORT BIT.
Jesus is then led by the Spirit to return back near His home and go about teaching the Kingdom of God.
And Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about Him spread through all the surrounding district.
And He began teaching in their synagogues and was praised by all.
And He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up; and as was His custom, He entered the synagogue on the Sabbath, and stood up to read.

The worship practice starts with
Reciting the Shema
“Hear, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord is one!
“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.
Praying while facing Jerusalem / Congregation all says amen after each prayer
Reading from sections of the scrolls of the Law and Prophets
A sermon and discussion
Followed by a Benediction or blessing.
Any male could read from the appointed sections of the scroll and give the sermons. A male could also be asked to give a sermon. The readings and the sermon speaker were all chosen ahead of time.
THIS IS IMPORTANT BECAUSE IT INDICATES THAT JESUS HAD BEEN ASKED TO BE A READER OF THE SCROLL OF ISAIAH.
IMAGINE THE COURAGE IT TOOK JESUS TO DO WHAT HE IS ABOUT TO DO.

HIS HOMETOWN Synagogue where he worshipped as a child and young man.
Likely filled with relatives and others who knew him well.
The religious leaders were those who mentored and raised him up in the Law of God.
IT IS HERE THAT THE HOLY SPIRIT LEADS JESUS TO PRONOUSE THE MISSION OF THE TRIUNE GOD IN AND THROUGH JESUS.

And the book of the prophet Isaiah was handed to Him. And He opened the book and found the place where it was written,
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me,
Because He anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor.
He has sent Me to proclaim release to the captives,
And recovery of sight to the blind,
To set free those who are oppressed,
To proclaim the favorable year of the Lord.”
And He closed the book, gave it back to the attendant and sat down; and the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on Him.
And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”
NOTICE HOW LUKE CONNECTS THE SPIRIT TO ALL OF THIS.
NOTICE HOW LUKE CONNECTS THE SPIRIT TO ALL OF THIS.
Baptism of Jesus / led into the wilderness by the Spirit to be test / The Spirit inspires Jesus to fight the temptation using the Law of God / Spirit empowers Jesus to teach / The Spirit leads Jesus to speak at the Synagogue. Finally Luke connects the Mission of God with the anointing of the Spirit.
LUKE IS NOT PAINTING A PICTURE OF A MAN WITH A MISSION CONFINED BY SPACE AND TIME.
NO, LUKE IS SHOWING US THE MISSION OF THE TRIUNE GOD.
A MISSION THAT SPANS SPACE AND TIME
FROM THE FALL UNTIL THE RETURN
THIS MISSION IS THE MISSION OF THE FATHER, SON, AND HOLY SPIRIT TO REDEEM HUMANITY FROM THE MESS WE HAVE MADE BY FALLING IN LINE WITH SATAN.

NOW LETS COMPARE THE TEMPTATIONS OF JESUS TO THE MISSION OF THE TRIUNE GOD IN JESUS.

Use your power for selfish gain to satisfy your human cravings -
Jesus says His mission is to the lowley and poor to give them the Good news that God has taken over the world in and through Him.
Satan promises power, glory, and a earthly kingdom if Jesus will bow before him.
The Mission of the Triune God is about liberty and freedom from the tyrany of Satan and the oppressive systems Satan builds in the hearts and mind of men. Freedom from sin, death, and evil.
Throw yourself off the temple and in a wondrous work of power prove to the people who you really are.
The mission of the Triune God is about healing the blind spiritually and physically to see. Jesus will use His power but not for His own self interests but rather for others to be set free and healed.

THIS BRINGS US TO OUR TWO QUESTIONS

WHAT DOES JESUS REVEAL ABOUT HIMSELF, THE FATHER, AND THE HOLY SPIRIT?
AND IN RESPONSE TO THIS REVELATION, HOW SHALL WE WORSHIP HIM?
WHAT JESUS REVEALS -
WHAT JESUS REVEALS -
Jesus announcment says the people can no longer simply view me as a carpenter, the son of Mary and Joseph. Not even a great teacher or prophet. No Jesus has revealed Himself as the Messiah, the Son of God.
Jesus shows us that the Triune God is -
Declaring the Good news of His reign over all the false gods and their evil ways. And he is doing this first to the low and poor, the mistreated, and those on the fringe of society. Even the weak and poor matter to God as much as the strong and wealthy.
God is setting people free from the bondage of sin, death, and spiritual powers through Jesus. Slaves to sin, slaves to the horrors of sin, the Triune God has come to set you free.
Healing the physically and spiritually blind - opening eyes to the reality of the Kingdom of God and the victory of God over the old order of the false gods.
Setting free those who are oppressed by evil, sin, shame, evil forces, wicked schemes of man, depression, hopelessness.
Declaring freedom to the World in Jesus - Jubilee has come - all the debt of our sins and mistakes have been canceled in Jesus. All that was lost due to the fall, our rebellion, and the evil done to us and the evil we did to others, will be restored.
THIS IS THE MISSION OF THE TRIUNE GOD -
NOW WE MUST ASK, HOW DO WE WORSHIP SUCH AND GOOD AND WONDERFUL GOD?

“If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.
But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as from the Lord, the Spirit.
TO WORSHIP IS TO OBEY AND TO BE TRANSFORMED INTO HIS IMAGE, AND CHARACTER.
We recognize Jesus as the Messiah - The second member of the Trinity who has come to set humanity free.
We must bow to His mission and join His mission.
Unashamedly proclaim the Gospel of Jesus in church and outside the Church walls.
We must not choose one kind of man over another when it comes to the Gospel but, rather we take the Gospel to all.
We must like our forefathers build systems, societies, and economic opportunities that are built on the Lordship of Jesus and the deliverance of humanity.
We must set spiritual and physical captives free.
We must pray for the healing of the blind, sick, and broken, and like our forefathers build hospitals, mental health systems, that bring physical healing to the poor and broken.
We must restore our public witness and proclimation of Jesus / Build systems that reflect Jubilee - freedom of all mankind in and through Jesus.
WORSHIPPING JESUS MEANS WE SUBMIT AND JOIN IN THE MISSION OF THE TRIUNE GOD.

Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves;
do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others.
Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus,
who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped,
but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men.
Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name,
so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
Let us Pray
‘Our Father who is in heaven,
Hallowed be Your name.
‘Your kingdom come.
Your will be done,
On earth as it is in heaven.
‘Give us this day our daily bread.
‘And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.
‘And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.’
LET US COMMISSION ONE ANOTHER THIS MORNING TO JOIN THE MISSION OF THE TRIUNE GOD, TO LEAVE THIS PLACE AND TO SET THE WORLD ABLAZE DECLARING AND LIVING THE GOSPEL OF JESUS.
