In the Beginning...
In the Beginning...
1 In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.
Before time, before creation, before anything
God
God has always been and will always be
So how do we get to know someone beyond our comprehension
We get to know His name
In scripture the name is more than a title
“Name” in biblical usage correctly describes the person, place, or object and indicates the essential character of that to which the name is given.
Through out scripture the names given to God give insight to His character
The all powerful God, The everlasting God, The God who sees, heals, shepherds.
The list goes on and on
We are going to focus on 3 and their different uses and forms
Elohim - God makes himself known by this name as the Lord of intense and extensive glory and richness as he exercises his preeminence and power in the created cosmos
Yahweh - I AM - particularly stresses the absolute faithfulness of God
Adonai - the name that expresses faith, assurance, security, ready service, and thanksgiving
As we see these names and dive into them , we will find the immeasurable depth of God and His character.
Many are names given to God to describe these attributes
Today I want to look at the name God gave himself
Let’s pray
The Absolute God
13 Then Moses said to God, “If I come to the people of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ what shall I say to them?” 14 God said to Moses, “I am who I am.” And he said, “Say this to the people of Israel: ‘I am has sent me to you.’ ” 15 God also said to Moses, “Say this to the people of Israel: ‘The Lord, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.’ This is my name forever, and thus I am to be remembered throughout all generations.
He is the God of the fathers and of the covenant
He is the God unfettered by time or space
He is the God who is self-dependent
The great I am and the up close God
Later, God would go deeper
God’s Self Proclamation
Let me give you some background:
God is fed up with the Israelites but Moses intercedes and ask to see God’s Glory (or face) - rest of the story
Moses goes up the mountain to receive 2 new tablets with the Law (broke the first ones)
And God proclaims His name and nature
5 The Lord descended in the cloud and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the Lord. 6 The Lord passed before him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, 7 keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but who will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children and the children’s children, to the third and the fourth generation.”
A God of mercy and grace
A God of love and faithfulness
A God of forgiveness and justice
God is beyond us and at the same time very personal
What I mean is we are only scratching the surface
8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. 9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.
And yet God wants to us to know Him personally
9 The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.

Knowing God
One of the most wonderful things about knowing God is that there’s always so much more to know, so much more to discover. Just when we least expect it, He intrudes into our neat and tidy notions about who He is and how He works.

We will spend the rest of eternity getting to know more about God
It is not enough time
The point is God wants us to know Him
As we know Him we become who we were created to be
As we know Him we become the image bearers we were meant to be
As we know Him we cannot help but to tell others about Him
