The Parable
The Parable
Luke is telling us right up front what the meaning of this parable is
V 1
pray and don’t lose heart
Paul tells us to pray without ceasing
be in contact with our Lord always
prayer should be like breathing
if we stop breathing we faint
And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint;
we breathe automatically we don’t have to think about it
we don’t need to put on a breathing machine at night to continue to breathe
as it should be with our communion with our Lord
What this parable is not saying
that we need to continually pester God with a prayer request
this parable is a parable of contrast
the king that the request is being made to is opposite of what God is
Lk 18:1
Praying Losing heart
Lk 18:2-5
The Widow God's Elect
Lk 18:6-8
Widow was a stranger We are God's children
Lk 18:6-8
Widow did not have open access (in that culture)
God's children have open access (Ep 2:18+; Ep 3:12+; Heb 4:16+; Heb 10:19-22+)
Lk 18:6-8
Widow did not have an advocate
We have an Advocate (1 Jn 2:1), a continual Intercessor (Ro 8:34+, Heb 7:25+), a High Priest (Heb 4:14-15+)
Lk 18:6-8
Widow had no promises she could claim
We have promises of God in His Word to claim (Lk 11:9-10+)
Lk 18:6-8
Widow had no internal helper
We have the Spirit Who helps us pray (Ro 8:26-27+)
Lk 18:6-8
Widow came to a court of law
We come to a throne of grace (Heb 4:14-16+)
Lk 18:6-8
Widow pled out of her poverty
We plead from perspective of God's plenty (Php 4:19+)
Lk 18:6-8
The judge was unrighteous
God is righteous
Lk 18:6-8
The judge could be bribed (common in that time)
God cannot be bribed
or argued with
Lk 18:6-8
Judge answered for fear of her forever wearying him
God answers for His glory and our good
read the parable and observe about all these things
V 1-5
Jesus wants us to come before The throne of grace and talk with your Lord
you don’t have to stand outside and yell and be bothersome
but have an intimate conversation with the Almighty
V 6
hear what that unjust judge said
I will do it because of her pestering
I’ll do it because I want some peace and quiet
I’ll do it because she is stressing me out
This is just the opposite of what God our Father would say when we come to Him in prayer
V 7
His elect
the ones that He Chose before the foundation of the world
the ones that Jesus came to die for
Jesus here is calling the believer the elect/ chosen ones
Jesus is teaching us that God will answer our prayers because of love
our Father will not delay in answering them
V 8
the prayers will be answered when the time is right
but we have to remember that for us quickly means before the sun goes down
but to God 1000 years is but a day
and
God is going to answer prayers according to His will
So don’t lose heart
don’t give up
continue to trust in Our Heavenly Father for your requests
Now that we have heard the normal preaching on this parable
lets put
In Context
In Context
Chapter devisions sometimes throw us off
what was the last 1/2 of chapter 17 about?
the second coming of Jesus
And He said to the disciples, “The days will come when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man, and you will not see it.
the church is being persecuted after Jesus leaves and goes back to Heaven
and they will long to see the return of Jesus
the Apostles will all die without seeing the rapture
we may all die without seeing the rapture
but I think this passage is speaking to the tribulation saints
because they are the only ones on earth that will be happy to see the return of Jesus
The tribulation Jews will also be happy to see their Messiah return
but they will first mourn over the fact that they rejected Him the first time
why am I saying this about the return of Jesus
the context is the second coming
the second coming is mentioned again at the end of verse 8
The widow wanted justice
V 7
what Justice will be needed for a saint an elect just before the coming of the King Our Lord?
turn to Revelation 7 9- 17.
These saints have come out of the tribulation where they have been killed
Then I saw thrones, and they sat on them, and judgment was given to them. And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded because of their witness of Jesus and because of the word of God, and who also had not worshiped the beast or his image, and had not received the mark on their forehead and on their hand. And they came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years.
turn to Revelation 6 9-11.
these are martyrs and they are asking for justice
and Jesus says just a little while longer
there are more of you coming
there are more of you that still need to be saved before I (Jesus) returns in my fury
with justice
“Now, will God not bring about justice for His elect who cry to Him day and night, and will He delay long over them?
can you see the context?
but no mater when it is we need to have an attitude of prayer
an faith that God will answer
that He has not forgotten
that we need to not lose heart
no matter what we are going through
no matter how bad life looks
no matter who is in office
no one will be as bad as the antichrist
so keep on praying keep your faith strong
