This week we read Parasha Bo, Exodus 10:1-13:16, in which we continue with the saga of Adonai freeing Israel from slavery in Egypt. Exodus 10 relays to us plagues 8 and 9, Locusts and Darkness; and Pharaoh’s continual hardening heart toward Israel and HaShem. Chapter 11 brings the details of the 10th and final plague, the death of the first born of all of Egypt—which, though sad, ultimately paved the way for Israel to be Shalach Yisrael (sent out—In Exodus 5 when Moses says, “The G-d of Israel says, ‘Let my people go…’” The Hebrew is “Shalach et ami” better translated as “send my people out…”).
In chapter 12, through Moshe, Adonai reveals to Israel how they are to observe what we now know as the first Pesach, the first Passover. And in this observance will Israel find protection from the 10th and final plague. And at the end of Parasha Bo we read the beginning of chapter 13 which describes the prominence of the firstborn of Israel, both man and animal, and how Israel is to redeem their firstborn sons when they come into the Promised Land.

Exodus 10:7–11 TLV
7 Pharaoh’s servants said to him, “How long will this man be a snare to us? Send the men, so they may serve Adonai their God. Don’t you realize yet that Egypt is being destroyed?” 8 So Moses and Aaron were brought to Pharaoh again. “Go, serve Adonai your God,” he said. “But who will be going?” 9 Moses answered, “We will go with our young and our elderly, our sons and our daughters. We will go with our flocks and our herds—for we must have Adonai’s feast for Him.” 10 But he said to them, “So may Adonai be with you, if I ever do let you go, with your little ones. See clearly now! Evil is in your face. 11 Not so! Go now—the men—and serve Adonai! For that’s what you were seeking.” Then they were driven out from Pharaoh’s presence.
Notice Pharaoh says that Israel is evil for wanting to take THEIR kids with them, for wanting to protect their kids…
With regards to Exodus 10: 7-11 Maayanah Shel Torah says:
Pharaoh was willing to let the menfolk go, as long as the children remain behind; for as long as the younger generation remains “in Egypt,” there would be no future for the people of Israel.
The “Pharaohs” of our day have the same attitude. If the older folk wish to cling to Jewish tradition, that is perfectly acceptable; but the youth should be raised in “the spirit of the times…”
This is an argument made by many voices today against the Body of Messiah, that the parents shouldn’t “indoctrinate” their kids with their beliefs but rather let the kids figure out their own beliefs… If we don’t teach them the world will…

Exodus 12:24–28 TLV
24 Also you are to observe this event as an eternal ordinance, for you and your children. 25 “When you come into the land which Adonai will give you as He has promised, you are to keep this ceremony. 26 Now when it happens that your children ask you, ‘What does this ceremony mean to you?’ 27 You are to say, ‘It is the sacrifice of Adonai’s Passover, because He passed over the houses of Bnei-Yisrael in Egypt, when He struck down the Egyptians, but spared our households.’ ” So the people bowed their heads and worshipped. 28 Then Bnei-Yisrael went and did it. They did just as Adonai had commanded Moses and Aaron.

In Exodus 13 G-d commands the consecration of the firstborn of animals and the consecration and redemption of the firstborn males of Israel
This is a direct result of the final plague on Egypt—death of the firstborn
He also commands Israel to eat no Chametz for seven days during Pesach
Exodus 13:8–16 TLV
8 “You are to tell your son on that day saying, ‘It is because of what Adonai did for me when I came out of Egypt. 9 So it will be like a sign on your hand and a reminder between your eyes, so that the Torah of Adonai may be in your mouth. For with a strong hand Adonai has brought you out of Egypt. 10 You are to keep this ordinance as a moed from year to year. 11 “Now when Adonai brings you into the land of the Canaanite, as He swore to you and your fathers and gives it you, 12 you are to set apart to Adonai every firstborn from the womb, and every firstborn male animal you have will be Adonai’s. 13 Every firstborn donkey you are to redeem with a lamb, and if you do not redeem it, then you are to break its neck. But you are to redeem every firstborn male among your sons. 14 “So when your son asks you in times to come, ‘What is this?’ say to him, ‘By a strong hand Adonai brought us out from Egypt, the house of bondage, 15 and when Pharaoh refused to let us go, Adonai slew all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both men and animals. So I sacrifice to Adonai all firstborn males, but I redeem the firstborn of my sons.’ 16 So it will be like a sign on your hand and like frontlets between your eyes, for by a strong hand Adonai brought us out of Egypt.”
Pesach and Sukkot both have a few key themes in common… But, one of the most important in my opinion is that both relay commands from HaShem that we are to observe both Moedim in ways in which our children will one day ask us, “why do we do these things?”

Principle: The enemy seeks to destroy your future testimony, while G-d aims to transform the redemption of your past into your future’s testimony.
Parasha Bo 5785
It isn’t just about our children in a literal sense, thought that is certainly a part of it
It is about the future of our testimony…
The enemy wants to destroy the future of our testimony
Psalm 71:14–18 TLV
14 But I—I will hope continually and will praise You more and more. 15 My mouth will recount Your justice and Your salvation all day, though I do not know the sum of them. 16 I come because of the mighty deeds of Adonai my Lord. I will remember Your righteousness —Yours alone. 17 God, You taught me from my youth, and I still keep declaring Your wonders. 18 So even until I am old and gray, O God, do not forsake me, till I tell of Your strong arm to the next generation, Your might to all who are to come.

John 4:27–30 TLV
27 At this moment, His disciples came back. They were amazed that He was speaking with a woman. Yet no one said, “What do You want?” or “Why are You speaking with her?” 28 So the woman left her water jar and went back to the town. She tells the people, 29 “Come see a man who told me everything I ever did! He couldn’t be the Messiah, could He?” 30 The people left the town and began coming to Him.

John 4:39–42 TLV
39 Many of the Samaritans from that town put their trust in Him because of the word of the woman testifying, “He told me everything I ever did!” 40 So when the Samaritans came to Him, they kept asking Him to stay with them. He stayed there two days, 41 and many more believed because of His word. 42 They kept telling the woman, “It’s no longer because of your words that we believe. We’ve heard for ourselves! Now we know that this really is the Savior of the world!”

Romans 8:31–39 TLV
31 What then shall we say in view of these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare His own Son but gave Him up for us all, how shall He not also with Him freely give us all things? 33 Who shall bring a charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. 34 Who is the one who condemns? It is Messiah, who died, and moreover was raised, and is now at the right hand of God and who also intercedes for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Messiah? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? 36 As it is written, “For Your sake we are being put to death all day long; we are counted as sheep for the slaughter.” 37 But in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. 38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Messiah Yeshua our Lord.

Revelation 12:10–11 TLV
10 Then I heard a loud voice in heaven saying, “Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of His Anointed One, for the accuser of our brothers and sisters—the one who accuses them before our God day and night—has been thrown out. 11 They overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives even in the face of death.
