And help us to remember that ultimately the work we do is all for your good and glory in the world.”

Introduction

As I was thinking about our topic for today (which is “Enjoying Your Job,”),
SEGUE
According to a post on LinkedIn, 85% of people hate their jobs.
But I don’t think that’s true.
Another article, said that 65% of us are happy in our jobs, and 20% of us would even call ourselves passionate about what we do.
Since most of us spend 40% of our waking hours doing work, my hope for this morning is that, whether you’re happy or indifferent about your current job, that by the time you leave here this morning, you’ll have five skills you can take to your job tomorrow that will help you be a Masters of Joy on your job, or at least like it a little bit more than you currently do.
So, in this 4th Sunday of our Joy series, I want to give you Five Principles for Finding Joy in Your Job…

Main Teaching

 Open a Bible to Colossians3
Here’s the first principle for finding joy in your job:
Working casually never feels good. Working hard brings satisfaction.
 Bible teaches in Colossians 3
Whatever you do, do it from the heart, as something done for the Lord and not for people, 24 knowing that you will receive the reward of an inheritance from the Lord. You serve the Lord Christ. Col. 3:23-24
When you put your heart into your work, your work always feels better.
We were made in the image of God, and God never does half-hearted work.
So if we ever do half-hearted work, we can’t feel good about it, it’s not in our nature.
The Apostle Paul says, “If you want to be motivated to do your best work, then don’t think of it as:
work you’re doing for a paycheck,
or work you’re doing for who ever employs you,
but work you’re doing for Jesus.”
Jesus gave His life for you; how greatly do you want to please Him?
Do you work like you’re doing it to please Him.
Working hard, whether it’s on a driving range, behind a desk, at school, at the end of the day, you feel good if you know you gave your best to whatever you did.
The second principle is:
2. Having goals gives you something to look for ward to.
(And…) Accomplishing goals gives you something to feel good about. Is. 32:8
Goals help you to be a better person at what ever job you may have.
Setting Goals help you in every area of your life.
Set goals on how many book you can read in a year, and so on -
Mick Jagger recorded that he tried and tried and tried and tried, but he couldn’t get no satisfaction
But you can.
The joy factor increases when you began to set goals that help you work hard to accomplish goals that you set.
Which might be what the Bible is talking about when it says,
The noble man makes noble plans, and by noble deeds he stands. Is. 32:8 (NIV 1984)

#3 is
3.    Working with friends is more fun than working with people. Make friends with the people you work with. Zeph. 3:9

The application to that is, make friends with the people you work with.
Learn about their families, the things they like, what their hopes are.

Way back in the sticky pages of the Old Testament, a prophet named Zephaniah brought a word that one day Messiah would come, and when that happened, it would be a new day.
Through Zephaniah, God said,
“When that day comes…Then I will purify the lips of the peoples, that all of them may call on the name of the Lord and serve him shoulder to shoulder.
Zephaniah 3:9
That image of serving together “shoulder to shoulder” resonates with men that the U.S. Marines, talking about how good it feels to serve shoulder to shoulder with men who become like brothers to you. (Photo showing Philippine and US military working shoulder to shoulder)
Example:
Find 2-3 people at work that seem like they could become friends, and make friends of them.
Invite them to eat lunch with you.
Invite them to some things outside of work with you.
Invite them to church. Get to know them.
SEGUE
A fourth On Mt. Sinai, God gave Ten Commandments to the children of Israel.
His fourth commandment is, “Remember the Sabbath, to keep it holy.”

Sundays, is a great way to slowdown and take a break from work every 7th day.
It’s the principle of stress and release.
Our minds and bodies were made to actively engage at a high level for short periods of time, and then to disengage for a few minutes before engaging again.
Ergonomics experts have discovered that people who engage in manual labor actually get more labor done if they’ll take a 15-minute break every two hours.
And people who engage in mental labor get more done if they take a 5-minute mental break every hour.

If you’re a gym-rat, you know that if you do leg work today, you want to do arm work or ab work tomorrow.
Giving your legs a break enables the muscles to recover and grow bigger.
This principle is so universal, God embedded it in the Bible.
In Genesis 1, God personally rested on the 7th day of creation as an example for us.

#4    The 4th principle - You were made for a rhythm of stress and release.
Remember the Sabbath and keep it holy! Is. 58:13-14

You grow better, you feel better, and you’re more joyful because you’re living according to the way you were designed when you actively engage (which is stress) and then passive withdraw (which is release).
The application to that principle is: Remember the Sabbath and keep it holy!

The prophet Isaiah promises:
13 “If you keep from desecrating the Sabbath, from doing what ever you want on my holy day; if you call the Sabbath a delight, and the holy day of the Lord honorable; if you honor it, not going your own ways, seeking your own pleasure, or talking business;
14 then you will delight in the Lord, and I will make you ride over the heights of the land, and let you enjoy the heritage of your father Jacob.” Isaiah 58:13-14
The Sabbath principle is so powerful concept!
You will achieve more and feel better about your life if you honor the Sabbath by releasing from work and engaging with God and His people every seven days.

 PRINCIPLE
When God tells us to do something, it’s because He wants to make our lives better.
God knows that releasing us from labor on Sundays will make you more effective and more joyful at work than packing Sundays with 1,000 honey-do’s, or kids sports, or other things that distract from God and rest.

The fifth principle that’s helped me to enjoy my job, is doing what you’re good at.

In 1 Peter 4:10, God says…
Just as each one has received a gift, use it to serve others,as good stewards of the varied grace of God. 1 Peter 4:10

Peter is talking about spiritual gifts.
There are 27 unique spiritual gifts listed in the Bible.
God endows each person with one or more of those when they receive Christ.
A few of the gifts are leadership, service, helps, administration, showing mercy, giving generously, and teaching.
That’s 7 of the 27.

If you’re a Christ-follower, at the moment you invited Jesus into your life,
He came into your life and brought you one of those abilities on a supernatural levela level most of the rest of us aren’t able to match.
Peter is saying, “Every Christian has a spiritual gifta supernatural enablement to do something for the church, really well.”
His point is, “You ought to figure out what your spiritual gift is, and then volunteer to use that gift to further the cause of the church.”

Conclusion

The principle of doing what you’re gifted in, as in doing that for the church, also applies to your work as well.
 Here’s the principle:
5. Everyone has strengths and weaknesses.
If possible, work in an area of your gifting.
Remember - 1 Pet. 4:10
So it’s not always possible, but as often as possible, work in an area of your gifting.
When you’re just starting out in the work force, you may have to prove yourself by doing whatever entry-level tasks you’re assigned.
But as you gain some experience and acquire a positive reputation with your superiors, eventually you ought to be able to get yourself assigned to things you’re really good at.
And of course, most people like doing things they are good at.

Salvation:

The Word of God says in: John 3:16
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
Romans 10:13 NKJV
For “whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
If you’d would like to receive Jesus today, please pray this prayer with all of us:
Lord I believe that Jesus is the Son of God, and that He died On the cross for my sins and His resurrection from the dead gives me eternal life. I ask forgiveness of my sins, and I accept Jesus as my Lord and Savior. Amen.

Communion

I want to take a few moments to give you the opportunity to ask forgiveness of any sin in your life.
Let us pray over the elements (Cross Exposed) in the name of the father, the son, and the Holy Ghost
Read first Corinthians 11:23- 26 - (Taking the elements together)
23 For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you: that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread;
24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” (take bread)
25 In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.” (Take Cup)
26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death till He comes.

Benediction

Just as each one has received a gift, use it to serve others, as good stewards of the varied grace of God. 1 Peter 4:10
We do not draw people to Christ by loudly discrediting what they believe, by telling them how wrong they are and how right we are, but by showing them a light that is so lovely that they want with all their hearts to know the source of it.” -Madeliene L’Engle (Lang ill)
