I. The Importance of Symbols 

A. The Old Testament Contains Many Symbols 

1. The Tabernacle Represented Christ

9 Which was a figure for the time then present, in which were offered both gifts and sacrifices, that could not make him that did the service perfect, as pertaining to the conscience;

2. The Rock that Gave Water Represented Christ

7 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, 8 Take the rod, and gather thou the assembly together, thou, and Aaron thy brother, and speak ye unto the rock before their eyes; and it shall give forth his water, and thou shalt bring forth to them water out of the rock: so thou shalt give the congregation and their beasts drink. 9 And Moses took the rod from before the Lord, as he commanded him. 10 And Moses and Aaron gathered the congregation together before the rock, and he said unto them, Hear now, ye rebels; must we fetch you water out of this rock? 11 And Moses lifted up his hand, and with his rod he smote the rock twice: and the water came out abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their beasts also. 12 And the Lord spake unto Moses and Aaron, Because ye believed me not, to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore ye shall not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them.

a. That Rock was Christ.

b. When Moses violated the symbol, he was severely punished. 

B. The New Testament Contains Symbols 

1. The Bread and Juice of Communion Represent Christ

23 For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread: 24 And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. 25 After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. 26 For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord’s death till he come.

a. When we violate this symbol, we will be severely punished.

II. Submission to Authority 

A. The Subject of I Corinthians 11 is NOT Hair

a. The Woman is Under the Man’s Authority

c. Christ (Humanity) is Under God’s (Deity) Authority

2. Hair Length is the Symbol of Submission 

a. A Man with Long Hair Dishonors His Authority

b. A Woman with Cut Hair Dishonors Her Authority

(1) Hair had a role in the Law of Jealousies (Numbers 5:11-31). When a woman’s hair was loosed (“uncover the woman’s head”), 
• she lost her symbol of morality. 
• Scholars believe that sentence for those guilty of adultery was to have their heads shaved (“the woman shall be a curse among her people”). 
(2) A Jewish man marrying a Prisoner of War (Deuteronomy 21) would shave her head. 
• Since this was a mark of shame for woman, it completely repudiated her old life as a Gentile. 
• Scholars agree that, once she became an Israelite, her hair would be allowed to grow again. 

III. The Definition of “Long” and “Short” 

A. According to the Greek 

1. Verses 14 and 15a: “long hair” = komao, which means “to let the hair grow.”

2. Verse 15b: “hair” = kome, which means “uncut hair.”

6 For if the woman be not covered, let her also be shorn: but if it be a shame for a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her be covered.

3. Verse 6: “shorn” = keiro, which means “to shear; to cut.” 

B. How long is long? 

1. The apostle spoke of learning from “nature.”

a. Obviously, “nature” is to be the guide in determining length. 

b. Since the scriptural standard for a woman is “long,” she should allow her hair to grow as long as nature allows. 

(1) Our Standard = No Cutting, Trimming, or Intentionally Damaging the Hair in any Way. 
(2) What About the Veil? 
(a) No Veil was Required in the Beginning. 
(b) A Woman’s Hair IS Her Veil.

(c) “Her hair is given her FOR a covering.” The word “Covering” is literally, “Veil.” 
(d) “FOR” = “Instead of, in the place of.” 
(e) Thus, a literal rendering would be, “Her hair is given to her instead of a veil.” 
(3) What About a Wig or Hairpiece? 
(a) While I understand that there are those who preach against wearing a hairpiece of any kind, I believe there is no compelling reason to completely ban the practice. 
(b) What about a woman who is undergoing chemotherapy? Is she to simply go around bald? I would rather she wore a wig. 
(c) There are, however, some guidelines I think which should be followed: 
(c1) They should not be worn for the sake of pride or trying to give a false impression (different hair color, etc.). 
(c2) They should not make the woman’s hair look cut or artificially colored. 

c. Since the scriptural standard for a man is “not long,” it should be as “short” as nature decrees. 

(1) Since a man’s hair is NOT to grow beyond what nature teaches, it only makes sense that nature’s guidelines be followed. Nature has set a “hairline” on a man that goes above the ears, stays above the collar, and does not hang into the eyes. If a man will keep his hair cut to follow the natural hairline, then he will never be accused of having “long” hair. 
(a) This is confirmed in two ways: 
(a1) Through the Principal of Gender Distinction.

5 The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman’s garment: for all that do so are abomination unto the Lord thy God.
(a2) Through the Principal of Godly Distinction.

17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you,
(b) Our Standard = Off the Ears, Off the Collar, Out of the Eyes; No Excessively Worldly Styles. 

IV. Dealing with Arguments 

A. “Jesus Had Long Hair.” 

1. This is Taken from Paintings – NOT Scripture! 

2. This is NOT Based Upon History – the Custom of that Day was SHORT HAIR. 

a. An article on CNN’s web site was entitled provides some insight into this matter. In it, the author wrote, “[Richard] Neave and a team of researchers started with an Israeli skull dating back to the 1st century. They then used computer programs, clay, simulated skin and their knowledge about the Jewish people of the time to determine the shape of the face, and color of eyes and skin. They turned to the Bible to determine the length of his hair. In the New Testament, ‘would Paul (one of the apostles) have written, “If a man has long hair, it is a disgrace to him” if Jesus Christ had had long hair?’ the article speculates.” [From the article From science and computers, a new face of Jesus By Jeordan Legon, CNN, Thursday, December 26, 2002.]  

3. Paul had Seen Jesus.

1 Am I not an apostle? am I not free? have I not seen Jesus Christ our Lord? are not ye my work in the Lord?

a. As the article points out, why would Paul condemn something practiced by His Lord? Obviously, Jesus did NOT have long hair! 

B. “We Have No Such Custom” 

1 Corinthians 11:16 KJV 1900
16 But if any man seem to be contentious, we have no such custom, neither the churches of God.

1. This is certainly NOT refuting everything Paul wrote up to this point! 

2. Consider Adam Clark’s Commentary on this: “If any person sets himself up as a … defender of such points, that a woman may pray or teach with her head uncovered, and that a man may, without reproach, have long hair; let him know that we have no such custom as either, nor are they sanctioned by any of the Churches of God, whether among the Jews or the Gentiles.” 

3. Consider also the NCV: “Some people may still want to argue about this, but I would add that neither we nor the churches of God have any other practice” (I Corinthians 11:16). 

V. Facial Hair 

A. Reasons Facial Hair is Unacceptable. 

1. It is a symbol of uncleanness.

45 And the leper in whom the plague is, his clothes shall be rent, and his head bare, and he shall put a covering upon his upper lip, and shall cry, Unclean, unclean.

2. “Shamefacedness” Applies to Men. 

1 Timothy 2:8–9 KJV 1900
8 I will therefore that men pray every where, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting. 9 In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;

a. “Shamefaced” = Not given to Pride or Flirtation. 

b. Even if it is not a matter of pride or flirtation with EVERYONE, I, as your pastor, have to draw a line that is safe for EVERYONE. 

3. Beards seem to be an “all or nothing” proposition in the Bible.

27 Ye shall not round the corners of your heads, neither shalt thou mar the corners of thy beard.
Leviticus 21:5 KJV 1900
5 They shall not make baldness upon their head, neither shall they shave off the corner of their beard, nor make any cuttings in their flesh.

a. The people were NOT told they MUST have beards, but they WERE instructed that, if they had a beard, they could not “mar” or “shave off” the “corner of their beard.” 

(1) The NCV says, “You must not cut the hair on the sides of your heads or cut the edges of your beard.” 
(2) GWT reads, “Never shave the hair on your foreheads, and never cut the edges of your beard.” 

b. Thus, if they were going to wear a beard, they had to let it grow without trimming it at all.  

c. It seems highly improbable – if not impossible – to have any pride in an “unkempt” beard. Keeping it trimmed becomes a matter of pride, and thus a violation of the principle of “shamefacedness.” 

3. Hold to Good Traditions.

15 Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle.

a. This has been a tradition among the vast majority of apostolic men with whom I have been in fellowship, and it certainly does not hurt the message OR the messenger. 

b. “In 1991, a survey was conducted among United Pentecostal Church members concerning the wearing of facial hair. The results were revealing: 71% prefer to deal with businessmen who are clean shaven; 67% said they trust those who are clean shaven more than bearded persons, and 65% are more suspicious of those with facial hair;… 79% said they felt a person’s Christian witness could be affected by the wearing of facial hair” [from Facial Hair – A Christian Perspective by Chancy Gore]. 

c. On the other hand, it is interesting to note how many Charismatic leaders sport facial hair. Could it be true that, “Free-growing hair is associated with free thinking and free living”? [from Facial Hair – A Christian Perspective by Chancy Gore]. 

4. Beware Being Associated with Wrong Crowds.

17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you,

a. “In light of all this, is facial hair a sin? The natural hair that grows on a man’s face every day is not inherently evil or, in allowing it to grow, necessarily sinful. However, could the motives behind it be sinful? The answer would simply be yes if it is associated and identified with a rebellious lifestyle, ‘macho-ism,’ ego, or pride. David K. Bernard, in his book, Essentials of Holiness, has stated that ‘beards… are a natural part of the male appearance. They are not inherently evil but are wrong only if associated with a sinful lifestyle, rebellion or pride.’ The Christian should avoid association or identification with any of these. Mainstream American society still links facial hair with a 60’s lifestyle, long hair on men, rebellion, non-conformity and outright pride. The clean shaven face serves the Christian well in avoiding these ills of society” [from Facial Hair – A Christian Perspective by Chancy Gore]. 

b. The fact remains that many business owners and managers feel that facial hair is unprofessional and lacks the clean image desired. Granted, not ALL feel that way, but many do. For example, the United States Air Force Auxiliary in Civil Air Patrol forbids the wearing of beards. In their booklet, Standards, customs and Courtesies, they explain this “standard” by saying, “You must comply with established dress and personal appearance standards… These standards consist of four elements—neatness, cleanliness, safety and image. The element requiring the most judgment is ‘image.’ It is the most important aspect of Civil Air Patrol appearance standards since other people, both military and civilian, draw certain conclusions about you and the Civil Air Patrol based upon what they see. … Your appearance must instill confidence and leave no doubt that Civil Air Patrol personnel respect and live a common standard and are responsive to order and discipline. Civil Air Patrol appearance standards are designed to reflect a moderate image and to exclude the extreme, the unusual, the fad.” 

c. “[T]ake notice of CEO’s, politicians, … the armed forces, and even the faces of various Presidents of the United States” [from Facial Hair – A Christian Perspective by Chancy Gore]. Until Abraham Lincoln (elected in 1860), no US President wore facial hair. Furthermore, none has worn it since William Howard Taft, whose term of office ended in 1913. The last president to wear a full beard was Benjamin Harrison, who served until 1883. Therefore, there has only been a period of a little more than 50 in US history in which those holding the highest office in our land wore facial hair. Only five US presidents have sported full beards, and another four had moustaches of varying degrees of glory. These were all during the half century run of the dozen Presidents between Lincoln and Taft, of whom only Andrew Johnson and McKinley were clean-shaven. No doubt there is a reason for those men to have been overwhelmingly clean shaven.  

d. The mustache has pretty much always had negative connotations, said Allan Peterkin, a Toronto psychologist and professor who wrote the book “One Thousand Beards: A Cultural History of Facial Hair.” [March 2002] 

(1) It might be interesting to note that, in his book, Mr. Peterkin cites as examples of “ Good” men who wore facial hair: Santa Claus (obviously fictional), Jesus and the disciples (none of which can he prove decisiviely). However, under the heading “The … Bad,” there is quite a list, including: Attila the Hun, Blackbeard, Henry the VIII, Bluebeard, Ho Chi Minh, and Jesse James. Also, there was Ghengis Khan, Ivan the Terrible, Joseph Stalin, Adolph Hitler, Saddam Hussein, and Osama Bin Laden. 

e. “Once a sign of virility and hotness, the great majority of young America now assigns three distinct possibilities to the mustache wearer: porn star, cop or homosexual” [from The Facial Hair Divide by Leslie Cohen – February, 2004]. 

5. Some Things are Done for the Gospel’s Sake. 

Acts 15:24 KJV 1900
24 Forasmuch as we have heard, that certain which went out from us have troubled you with words, subverting your souls, saying, Ye must be circumcised, and keep the law: to whom we gave no such commandment:

a. Although there was “no such commandment,” notice what Paul did with Timothy. 

Acts 16:1–3 KJV 1900
1 Then came he to Derbe and Lystra: and, behold, a certain disciple was there, named Timotheus, the son of a certain woman, which was a Jewess, and believed; but his father was a Greek: 2 Which was well reported of by the brethren that were at Lystra and Iconium. 3 Him would Paul have to go forth with him; and took and circumcised him because of the Jews which were in those quarters: for they knew all that his father was a Greek.

b. Although it was not MANDATORY, it WAS expedient so that Timothy could be well received among those he wanted to influence. 

6. Our Standard: No Mustaches or Beards; Sideburns at About the Middle of the Ear.
