Reading of the Word
Reading of the Word
Watch over your heart with all diligence, For from it flow the springs of life.
Rid yourself of a deceitful mouth And keep devious speech far from you.
Let your eyes look directly ahead And let your gaze be fixed straight in front of you.
Watch the path of your feet, And all your ways will be established.
Do not turn to the right or to the left; Turn your foot from evil.

Heavenly Father,
Open our hearts and minds to Your Word. Remove distractions, renew our focus, and let Your truth take root in us. May we walk in wisdom, fix our eyes on Jesus, and live for Your glory.
Speak, Lord—Your servants are listening.
Amen.
Introduction
Introduction
Refocus. It can be hard to get proper focus in a photograph, especially in a dark room. Perhaps you’re taking a picture on your phone, and if you move at a certain angle, the picture blurs. You have to wait and refocus or retake the picture. Focusing takes time. Things that are wise or right in life take time; achieving focus in your life does not come overnight.
The writer of Proverbs highlights the profound truth that what we focus on shapes our lives. Our words reflect our hearts, and our actions follow our focus. If we are transformed by wisdom, it will change how we speak and act. Instead of deceiving, we will offer wise counsel to others. Wisdom calls us to look ahead, to fix our eyes on what’s right, and to live accordingly—walking a straight path without swerving.
The choice is clear: focus on God’s wisdom, and let it guide every step you take.
Protecting the Heart's Purity
Protecting the Heart's Purity
What is the heart?
Many times in Scripture, the word heart is used interchangeably to describe the soul as well.
Physical
The heart is what gives the body life. It pumps blood throughout your body, keeping everything else alive.
For the life of the flesh is in the blood.
Moral
The heart is the seat of the conscience, where wisdom is stored and shaped. It influences both life and character.
The Applied Old Testament Commentary Wisdom Is Supreme (4:1–27)
The “heart” is our inner being, our SOUL, our real self; it is from our hearts that our deepest thoughts and desires come. What we are on the inside will sooner or later express itself on the outside, in our words and actions
Spiritual
We also know that our spiritual life comes from the heart of God, given to us through the shedding of His precious blood.
And almost all things are cleansed with blood, according to the Law, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.
Just as junk food affects our physical health, what we feed our souls shapes our spiritual health. Whatever we take in will be reflected in our conscience and shown outwardly through our thoughts, desires, and actions.
Guarding the Heart
Guarding the Heart
Recognizing the Need
Now that we understand the heart, we must also recognize the need to actively guard it against all evil.
This is not a passive guard, like the soldiers who fell asleep at Jesus’ tomb. It requires active vigilance—something we must do continually, now and always.
A Real-Life Analogy
Have you ever played a video game where you protect a castle? You build defenses and watch for enemies, or the castle could be overrun! Guarding your heart is similar. Verse 23 tells us that we are responsible for fortifying our hearts against negativity and sin. Just as you strategize in the game, strategize in life to keep your heart safe from harm!
Living With A Pure Heart In Christ
Holiness is not based on our works but on the finished work of Christ on the cross. Through Jesus, we are:
Washed
Consider a coffee cup: if it’s cleaned but still holds the flavor of yesterday’s coffee, it’s not truly cleansed. Our lives can be like that cup; we may put on a nice front but still hold onto guilt, anger, or bitterness. Jesus doesn’t just clean us—He cleanses us, removing the residues of sin and replacing them with His peace and love, giving us a fresh start with a hope-filled future.
We allow God to meet us in our helplessness, acknowledging that without Him, we are nothing.
We must allow God to tenderize our hearts. As He seasons our hearts, He transforms them from stone to flesh—hearts that can be shaped and molded for His purpose.
We place our trust in His love, and He gives us a spiritual bath. While our sins are temporarily washed away, we know we must continually return to Him to maintain our purity.
Cleansed
The roots of sin are uprooted, making room for God’s holy love to fill and transform us.
We allow God to do this in us when we yield our will to His.
We say yes to God and no to the world.
The removal of sin is difficult and painful as our old nature is replaced with something entirely new.
Our focus shifts from thoughts of sin to thoughts of God, and we must continually keep our gaze fixed upon Jesus.
The Wellspring Analogy
In ancient Israel, the most important real estate in any town was the spring that provided water. The people built elaborate systems to protect these wells, knowing they were crucial to their survival. These elaborate systems cost a lot of money, but it better protected those who would be drinking from the well.
No less diligent effort is needed to protect our hearts from disaster. Just as the well was guarded from threats, we must guard our hearts with the same vigilance.
The Springs of Life
When we remain pure of heart, the springs of life flow from us.
The life of God flows from His throne (the well) to our hearts, and from our hearts to the world through our words, actions, and leadership.
Our Greatest Priority
Put up the guard so that the treasure won’t be stolen.
Pouring life into our hearts must be our greatest priority. What we put in shapes what comes out. We must ensure that nothing pollutes the wellspring of our hearts.
We need to be able to discern what can be allowed in our hearts so that our focus will be Christ-centered, which will enable us to live out God’s purposes.
Purify with Positive Speech
Purify with Positive Speech
Proverbs 4:24
The mouth reflects a person’s character. This is the greatest expression of the heart. Words are deeds. People remember them.
If our heart is aimed on the beautiful things of God, words of life will flow to whoever hears your voice.
We Must Reject Perverse and Corrupt Speech
Guarding Our Words Reflects Our Heart
The words we speak are a direct reflection of what is in our hearts. If we allow perverse and corrupt speech to take root, it will pollute our hearts and affect our relationship with God and others.
Proverbs 4:24 reminds us, "Put away from you a deceitful mouth and put devious speech far from you." Our words should reflect the purity and love of Christ.
Words Have the Power to Build or Destroy
Our speech carries immense power—it can either build others up or tear them down. Ephesians 4:29 urges us, "Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear."
Rejecting corrupt speech is not only about protecting ourselves but also about using our words to build others up and spread the love of Christ.
We must speak words that inspire others to reflect on and remember the beautiful truths Christ wants us to hold in our hearts.
Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, think about these things.
Speech holds immense value, shaping life for better or worse. As we focus on Christ, His words become our own, allowing our hearts to flow with the words of everlasting life to the world.
Persist with Perfect Vision
Persist with Perfect Vision
Proverbs 4:25
Our eyes are the gateway to knowledge, whether good or evil. We must choose carefully what we allow ourselves to see, ensuring that what we look at guides us toward the things of God and guarding our heart.
Where does Jesus want us to look? Straight ahead at him.
Imagine a picture of Jesus with a circle cut out, representing tunnel vision. When you enter a tunnel, your focus is entirely on what’s ahead. Everything else around you fades from view, and the only light you see is at the other end. In the same way, when we fix our eyes on Jesus, we are focused solely on Him, with everything else fading into the background. The light we need is found only by looking straight ahead toward Him.
When our eyes wander, our souls can drift away from Jesus. Distractions arise, often designed to appear pleasing and tempting, drawing our focus. It's often only after we stumble that we recognize the harm we've caused to our hearts.
But thanks be to God, we can still live pure lives because we are overcomers, empowered by the Holy Spirit!
Satan knows the power that concentration holds. As we fix our gaze on Jesus, we make it our heart's desire to follow Him with unwavering focus..
Keep your focus firmly fixed on Christ. Cultivate tunnel vision that sharpens your ability to concentrate, and watch as the world and its distractions fade into the background.
Pave a Purposeful Path
Pave a Purposeful Path
Proverbs 4:26-27
Watch wear you’re walking. The devil wants to put things in our path to cause us to stumble.
Once, I was navigating a new city with a GPS that led me on a series of unexpected detours. Each turn took me further away from my destination, frustrating me. One even led me to a dead end road. In life, the enemy presents us with enticing detours that may feel right, but can ultimately lead us astray from God’s plan. The detorus lead us fruther from the path or to areas in life that lead us to dead end roads. We must be careful to follow only the original route given to us by God so that we make sure we remain safe and on the best path to our destination.
If we stray from the path, we risk wandering into danger, lowering our guard, and leaving our hearts vulnerable to the enemy’s attack.
Before we act, we need to consider the consequences of our actions.
We have to make the choice whether to live for God or to stray into sin.
Either choice will have consequences.
When we walk carefully, we stay on the right path—one that leads us to live for God's glory and point others to Jesus.
When the gaze is fixed ahead, the feet follow.
To Sum It Up: Walking with Christ involves constantly battling distractions that keep us from focusing on Him, and we must turn our eyes from these distractions to fixate on Christ.
Conclusion
Conclusion
As we walk through life, our hearts are constantly shaped by what we focus on. If we fix our eyes on Christ, our steps will follow, leading us in the way of wisdom, purity, and purpose. But if we lose sight of Him, distractions and detours will pull us away, leaving us vulnerable to the enemy’s schemes.
The call today is clear—guard your heart, watch your steps, and keep your focus unwaveringly on Jesus. He is the path, the truth, and the life. Walk in His way, and your life will shine with His glory, pointing others to the Savior who alone can transform hearts and lead us home.
