Vision: Taking Jesus with us everywhere.
Now it’s time to talk about values. Everyone of us has values.
Jesus told us to abide.
John 15:4–8 ESV
Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in me he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples.
Today we’re focusing on the first of seven values for LGT:
Relationship with Jesus
10 min exposition on John 15.
Introduction to strategy.
Scripture
Prayer
Praise.
(Practical application points for families).
Why value relationship with Jesus? Well, He valued it with us, and:
Fellowship with God
Standing strong - not withering
Victory
Godly character
Success - in doing what God asks.
So the question is, how do you live out relationship with Jesus?
Scripture
Prayer
Praise

John 15:4-8

John 15:4 ESV
Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me.
Our command from Christ to abide
Relationship with Jesus is the first value at LGT because it shapes everything we are a do. Christ desires relationship with you! As we talked about last week, often people think being a Jesus-follower is religion. But it’s about having saving faith - life saving relationship with Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour. Just like with your spouse you would continue to cultivate that relationship, so we want to keep growing in our walk with Jesus. We want to be growing in Him, ever getting stronger in our faith! Furthermore, we want to live out our mission! But to do that, we have to abide!
This is where strategy comes in. If values are who we are, then strategy is how we live it out. How do we live out relationship with Jesus? Through Scripture, Prayer, and Praise. These help us to abide in Christ - growing in our relationship with Him. Let’s dive into them:

Prayer

Colossians 4:2 ESV
Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving.
1 Thessalonians 5:16–18 ESV
Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.
Prayer is crucial for all that we do. Not just praying for needs, but learning to properly listen to the voice of the Holy Spirit. The primary way God speaks is through His Word, so if you are not in His Word do not expect to hear Him super well!

Praise

Psalm 7:17 ESV
I will give to the Lord the thanks due to his righteousness, and I will sing praise to the name of the Lord, the Most High.
Praise is integral to what we do. Peter & John, etc… Praise is a weapon that we have. It reorients our hearts and minds, causing us to look up (Jesus) and out (others), instead of down and in (Selfishness). Abiding in Jesus means spending time with Him. Learning to adore Him, appreciate Him, and just be in His presence is life-giving to our souls.
Tangible ways to live this out.
Sunday Worship
Prayer Gathering worship
Worship in your home.
Play worship while you work.
There’s always a song in my head. Seriously. I love lot of kinds of music. I will listen to lots of Christian, some country, even a bit of pop or rock if it’s fairly clean. But do you know what I notice? If I spend time listening to worship, that’s usually the stuff playing in my head the next day. The same can be said for country, pop, rock, etc. What song do you want playing in your head?

The Bible

2 Timothy 3:16–17 ESV
All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
This verse I feel frames the section. The Word of God is our final authority for belief and practice. Why? Because it is God’s Word. Not just an ordinary book. It is infallible. Here’s the thing, if the primary way God speaks is through His Word, and we are called to abide in Jesus, this means steeping ourselves in Scripture. Learning it, asking God to open it to us, being challenged by it, and allowing our lives to be shaped by it.
Psalm 1:1–3 ESV
Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.
Psalm 119:105 ESV
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
Colossians 3:16 ESV
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.
