The desire to please others?
Tension: How do I live a life pleasing to God?
Tension: How do I live a life pleasing to God?
Context:
Solomon Building the Temple - Divinely Appointed to Do So.
2 Chronicles 6:7–11 “Then Solomon said, “My father, David, wanted to build this Temple to honor the name of the Lord, the God of Israel. But the Lord told him, ‘You wanted to build the Temple to honor my name. Your intention is good, but you are not the one to do it. One of your own sons will build the Temple to honor me.’ “And now the Lord has fulfilled the promise he made, for I have become king in my father’s place, and now I sit on the throne of Israel, just as the Lord promised. I have built this Temple to honor the name of the Lord, the God of Israel. There I have placed the Ark, which contains the covenant that the Lord made with the people of Israel.””
Solomon Goal is how to GET HIS WORSHIP RIGHT. He wants to please God. We can relate!
We want to do all the right things. We say the right things, we look the right way. But we feel like we’re spinning tires.
We begin to wonder if this thing is legit? Like is there actually a benefit to all of this fighting, and rules, and living.
How do I honour God? Am I pleasing Him with my life?
Scripture
Scripture
2 Chronicles 7:1–4 “When Solomon finished praying, fire flashed down from heaven and burned up the burnt offerings and sacrifices, and the glorious presence of the Lord filled the Temple. The priests could not enter the Temple of the Lord because the glorious presence of the Lord filled it. When all the people of Israel saw the fire coming down and the glorious presence of the Lord filling the Temple, they fell face down on the ground and worshiped and praised the Lord, saying, “He is good! His faithful love endures forever!” Then the king and all the people offered sacrifices to the Lord.”
2 Chronicles 7:14–16 “Then if my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and restore their land. My eyes will be open and my ears attentive to every prayer made in this place. For I have chosen this Temple and set it apart to be holy—a place where my name will be honored forever. I will always watch over it, for it is dear to my heart.”
SANCTIFICATION
Set-Apart - Holiness. Separate yourselves from that which is unholy.
What did Solomon do that PLEASED GOD?
Main Point: Humility Precedes Holiness
Main Point: Humility Precedes Holiness
Holy Spirit here WORKS as the SANCTIFIER.
Temples don’t exist! What does this mean for me today?
Application
Application
1 Corinthians 6:19 “Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself,”
Even though the location of the temple has changed, the stewardship of that temple has not changed. Nor has God’s perspective of it - his NAME WILL BE there forever. He has STILL set it apart. It’s still dear to his heart.
Humility still precedes Holiness.
THE HOLY SPIRIT WORKS SANCTIFICATION in OUR LIVES NOW
Instantaneous and Progressive.
THIS IS YOUR LIFE. THIS IS WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A DISCIPLE.
What it isn’t
Legalism, Perfectionism
What it is
Our focus, is HUMILITY and OBEDIENCE - GOD works the change in our lives. It’s a partnership. We can’t create the growth
1 Peter 1:2 “God the Father knew you and chose you long ago, and his Spirit has made you holy. As a result, you have obeyed him and have been cleansed by the blood of Jesus Christ. May God give you more and more grace and peace.”
1 Corinthians 6:11 “Some of you were once like that. But you were cleansed; you were made holy; you were made right with God by calling on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.”
2 Thessalonians 2:13–14 “As for us, we can’t help but thank God for you, dear brothers and sisters loved by the Lord. We are always thankful that God chose you to be among the first to experience salvation—a salvation that came through the Spirit who makes you holy and through your belief in the truth. He called you to salvation when we told you the Good News; now you can share in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
FRUIT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
Galatians 5:22–23 “But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!”
How do you please God? How do you begin to see that change in your life.
If you want to EXPERIENCE the SANCTIFICATION of God it starts with your HUMILITY. It starts with surrender.
Response: Surrender
Response: Surrender
What are the things in your life, you need to surrender to God?
Attitude. Faith over Feelings.
A situation - releasing the results and responses of other people?
An addiction -
Focus on your part - humility and obedience today.
Practically - means having a conversation with God, and living it out everyday.
We want to pray with you.
