2) Christ’s Death On the Cross
It was through His bodily death on the cross that Christ won
our redemption through His blood (2:7) . The cross is the symbol of the
substitutional death of Christ on our behalf, a death which was under the curse
of God (Galatians 3:13). That is why the Cross expresses the totality of the
gospel (1 Corinthians 1:18; cf. Romans 1:16). On the cross Christ received in
our stead the sentence of God’s wrath upon sin (Romans 3:24, 25; cf. 1 John 2:2).
(3) Christ’s Resurrection
In 1 Corinthians 15:5f., Paul gave the historical proof of
the resurrection of Christ. In Ephesians Paul spoke of the resurrection of
Christ as a demonstration of the power of God and a testimony that this power
is “to us-ward who believe” (1:19, 20). As in the other epistles, as well as
the whole of the New Testament, the resurrection of Christ has a central place
in the Epistle to the Ephesians (see Acts 2:24; Romans 1:4; 4:25; 14:9; 1
Corinthians 15; 1 Peter 1:3; Revelation 1:18).
