Fall of Man, and God’s Grace through Jesus

We’ve heard that everyone struggles with sin. Whether you are 12, 25 or 99, you deal with sin every day. Whether it’s lying to your parents, fighting with your sister, or being mean to someone at school, we all deal with sin, but where did it all start?
This is the story of the sin entering the world, the Fall of Man.

Twisting God’s Word
This is an important story to be reminded of, Adam and Eve had it all, all the food they could eat, eternal life, and life spent face to face in community with God. But Satan didn’t like that all was Good.
Satan didn’t want Adam and Eve to listen God, and he twisted the words meant for Good, into lies.
Genesis 3:1–5 ESV
Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’ ” But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
Satan is a known liar, it says in John 10:10
John 10:10a ESV
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy.
He doesn’t want us to hear the good words that come from God. What are some of the lies that satan tells us?
Ex.
Does God really love you?
You’ll be happier than you could ever dream.
Maybe God doesn’t want you to be happy
You don’t need God.
Satan promises us everything we could ever want. But he has nothing to offer but death.
Genesis 3:6–7 ESV
So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths.
Immediately after convincing Eve, and subsequently Adam to eat of the tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. They felt shame, they realized they were naked, and covered them selves up.
Genesis 3:8–13 ESV
And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. But the Lord God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?” And he said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself.” He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?” The man said, “The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate.” Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this that you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”
They hid from God. They were afraid, the were full of shame, and they didn’t want to face God.
When God called to Adam, and questioned him about how he know about his shame, and if he had eaten of the one tree they were told not to touch. Adam immediately shifted the blame to Eve. Gen 3:12“The woman whom you gave to be with me, she game me fruit of the tree, and I ate.”
Do you ever find yourself caught in a lie or a sin, and try to shift the blame to someone else? “He started it”
“She said we wouldn’t get in trouble”
etc.
The point is, this is the point where sin entered the world. From the moment Eve ate that apple, we were all doomed to a life separated from God.
Romans 3:23 ESV
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
This is the perfectly right thing for God to do. But we can’t possible live up to perfection, so God gave us a way out.
Romans 5:8 ESV
but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Even in our failure, God has unconditional love for us, he was willing to send us a savior! We were hopeless, but he gives us hope. We were unlovable, but He loved us. We couldn’t save ourselves, but Christ could.
Ephesians 2:1 ESV
And you were dead in the trespasses and sins
God chose to how mercy, love, and kindness to us. If God didn’t send His Son to deal with sin, we couldn’t be saved from the consequences of Sin.
Romans 6:23 ESV
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
This is the good news, this is the Gospel! We can’t keep the law, and we are subject to the consequences of our sins. But God gives us the gracious gift of eternal life through Jesus Christ.
We are deserving of death, but He has given us the chance to have life through the sacrifice of his son. Jesus gave up his place in heaven to come to earth, and live the lowly life of a carpenters son.
He lived his whole life without sin. He didn’t deserve death, but he died a sinners death. He paid the penalty for sin so we, the sinners wouldn’t have to! We don’t need to spend an eternity separated from God, when we come to believe in and follow Christ, come judgment day. We are washed white as snow, and God sees perfection, in his Son.
Romans 10:9 ESV
because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
Do you believe that Jesus is Lord? Do you believe He was the Son of God who died for your sin and rose from the dead? Are you willing to confess your sin, accepting the bad news that you are spiritually bankrupt without God’s help? Are you willing to accept the good new that God has made a way for you to have a relationship with Him and be saved from the penalty of sin?
You don’t have to live a life of brokenness and bondage, you don’t have to be hopeless. Jesus can set you free. Jesus can give you hope
2 Corinthians 5:17 ESV
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.
In a world looking for solutions to the brokenness of human sin, the gospel declares that Jesus is the answer.
First Gospel Promise
Genesis 3:14–15 “The Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, cursed are you above all livestock and above all beasts of the field; on your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life. I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.””
This is what is called Protoevangelium, or the “First Gospel”
This is God’s promise to send a savior to defeat sin and death.
And that’s just the start of seeing Jesus throughout the Bible.
What was the main consequence of Adam and Eve eating the fruit from the tree?
What was the first lie that Satan told Eve in the Garden of Eden?
How can you identify the lies that Satan tells you in your daily life?
In what ways can you remind yourself of God's unconditional love during tough times?
What is the ‘Protoevangelium’ and why does it matter to the whole story of the Bible?
