Faith That Silences Doubt
Bible Passage: Matthew 15:21-28
Bible Passage: Matthew 15:21-28
Summary: In this encounter, a Canaanite woman approaches Jesus in desperation for her daughter's healing. Despite initially being met with silence and a seemingly harsh response, her unwavering faith and persistence lead to a miraculous healing, illustrating the tension between cultural biases and the transformative power of a belief that refuses to give up.
Application: This passage offers a profound lesson in faith, especially for Christians facing difficult circumstances or spiritual hindrances. It encourages believers to persist in their prayers and to confront doubts with unwavering confidence in God's ability to heal and deliver, urging them to rise above societal expectations that may discourage their faith journeys.
Teaching: The teaching centers around the concept that true faith is not easily deterred by initial rejection or obstacles. It promotes the idea that God honors persistent faith, emphasizing that while the journey of faith can be fraught with challenges, the rewards of steadfast belief can lead to profound spiritual breakthroughs.
How this passage could point to Christ: This passage showcases Christ as the embodiment of grace and patience, emphasizing His mission to reach the marginalized and the outsiders. The narrative foreshadows the inclusion of all people in God's redemptive plan, as seen throughout the New Testament, ultimately directing readers to Christ's universal call to faith and salvation.
Big Idea: Persistent faith can break through barriers of doubt and despair, leading to miraculous encounters with God that redefine our understanding of grace and healing.
Context: major division between the Jews and the Gentiles.
The Gentiles were steeped in paganism, worshipping all kinds of God.
1. Silence as an Invitation
1. Silence as an Invitation
Matthew 15:21-23
Jesus’s silence may be shocking here, as he seemingly ignores her. However, Jesus points out later that his first purpose was to minister to his wayward people of Israel. Romans 1:16.
Jesus graciously tests this Canaanite Woman’s faith, by not answering her right way. He was seeing if she was seeking him as one of the gods she worshipped, or the one true and living God.
Often, we are wondering why God is silent in our life, but he is often testing us, to refine our faith from trusting in ourselves, into trusting in God alone.

2. Surpassing Societal Surveys
2. Surpassing Societal Surveys
Matthew 15:24-28
The Gospel breaks down human barriers.
Jesus calls this woman a “dog”. But not a mut. There are two words in the original language of the Bible, this one means family pet or lap dog. He called her a term of endearment.
Jesus was using a metaphor to explain that he had a higher obligation to serve his fellow Jews, not that he despised the Gentiles. The woman replied that Jesus need not neglect Jews by meeting Gentile needs any more than children go hungry.
Even then, the ministry of Jesus would ultimately expand to the Gentiles, through the Preaching of the Church.
Isaiah 49:5-6.
Matthew 28:19, 20.
Acts 1:8.
Ephesians 2:11-22.
I know that many here have been castaways from churches all over the place. The Gospel levels the playing field.
Many of you may feel like the world’s untouchables. Many of you may feel like you have no community. What Christ has done for us in the Gospel, reconciles us to God, and to others.
