Faith That Silences Doubt

1. Silence as an Invitation

Matthew 15:21-23

Jesus’s silence may be shocking here, as he seemingly ignores her. However, Jesus points out later that his first purpose was to minister to his wayward people of Israel. Romans 1:16.

Jesus graciously tests this Canaanite Woman’s faith, by not answering her right way. He was seeing if she was seeking him as one of the gods she worshipped, or the one true and living God.

Often, we are wondering why God is silent in our life, but he is often testing us, to refine our faith from trusting in ourselves, into trusting in God alone.

2. Surpassing Societal Surveys

Matthew 15:24-28

The Gospel breaks down human barriers.

Jesus calls this woman a “dog”. But not a mut. There are two words in the original language of the Bible, this one means family pet or lap dog. He called her a term of endearment.

Jesus was using a metaphor to explain that he had a higher obligation to serve his fellow Jews, not that he despised the Gentiles. The woman replied that Jesus need not neglect Jews by meeting Gentile needs any more than children go hungry.

Even then, the ministry of Jesus would ultimately expand to the Gentiles, through the Preaching of the Church.

I know that many here have been castaways from churches all over the place. The Gospel levels the playing field.

Many of you may feel like the world’s untouchables. Many of you may feel like you have no community. What Christ has done for us in the Gospel, reconciles us to God, and to others.
