Introduction to the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit gets a bad rap.
He’s often referred to as it.
He’s mistaken for the force from Star Wars.
He’s confused with a ghost in paranormal activity.
Oftentimes, he’s just ignored or forgotten
As Charismatic Pentecostal believers our historical emphasis on having a personal experience with the Holy Spirit has sometimes brought us into a great deal of criticism from other members in the Christian family. Many have perceived us as basing reality upon the subjectivity of our own experience rather than upon the objectivity of God’s Word.
George O. Wood, “Foreword,” in The Holy Spirit: A Pentecostal Perspective (Springfield, MO: Logion Press; Gospel Publishing House, 2001), 9.
But ultimately they have forgotten that there are so many accounts of individual’s experiencing God in the Bible
Moses and the burning bush
Samual hearing the Lords voice as a boy
Gideon asking for a sign
Judges 6:34 NLT
Then the Spirit of the Lord clothed Gideon with power. He blew a ram’s horn as a call to arms, and the men of the clan of Abiezer came to him.
The list is endless and there experiences show us that we serve a living God who not only created us in His image giving us a spirit soul and body
(use slide of spirit soul body)
The body of man is a home for the soul and spirit, the soul and spirit are immortal, the body is mortal.
Until a man is born again he assess situations
with his will, emotions and intellect.   These are influenced by his soul, as the soul is the seat of the emotions and mind, which drives the will.
His desire will come from his soul and flesh, and primarily the spirit of man is dead (cut off from God).
So outward spirits can influence his decisions and desires by darkening mans spirit.
Ephesians 2:1–3 NLT
Once you were dead because of your disobedience and your many sins. You used to live in sin, just like the rest of the world, obeying the devil—the commander of the powers in the unseen world. He is the spirit at work in the hearts of those who refuse to obey God. All of us used to live that way, following the passionate desires and inclinations of our sinful nature. By our very nature we were subject to God’s anger, just like everyone else.
See Also: Rom 8:5,9,13. Gal 5:17
Romans 8:5 ESV
For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit.
So before we are born again we live as two bit people in our body and soul.
“Until a man is born of the Spirit, his soul will run his life.  He is used to assessing situations with his mind, and reaching his own conclusions.  He makes his own decisions, based upon the reasoning of his mind, or as a result of the emotional desire he has, or by a combination of the two.” (Colin Urquhart: In Christ Jesus)
Proverbs 20:27 NKJV
The spirit of a man is the lamp of the Lord, Searching all the inner depths of his heart.
(KJV) The spirit of man is the candle of the LORD, searching all the inward parts of the belly.
Before we are born again the Holy Spirit works on us because we don’t chose God he chose us.
2Th 2:13 (WEB) But we are bound to always give thanks to God for you, brothers loved by the Lord, because God chose you from the beginning for salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief in the truth;
Once we are born again (Jhn 3:1-23) our spirits are connected to God through the Son and Holy Spirit.  We are a new creation but it’s only our spirit that is reborn, and our spirit needs feeding with the word.   We also need a relationship with the triune God, by that our flesh and soul needs to come in to order to our spirit, and likewise our spirit to God.  Even though we are born again the sinful nature still resides in the flesh and the passions of the soul, so we need to become spiritually minded (Rom 8: 4-8).
Consequently our soul and body can be damaged, so we need the Lord to heal and restore us (i.e. from soul ties, past relationships, family ties and sickness) to what He created us for.

The point of the study’s we will be looking at over the coming weeks is to give us a biblical understanding of the Holy Spirit.
First, if you have already had a powerful experience or experiences in the Holy Spirit, this work will put a biblical floor underneath your feet.
It will provide you with a thorough understanding of the person and work of the Holy Spirit, as revealed throughout the Scripture—our totally trustworthy source for truth.
A great Pentecostal leader of another generation, Thomas F. Zimmerman, remarked that the relationship of the Spirit to Scripture is like a river to its banks. “The Holy Spirit,” he said, “is the river, but the Spirit will only flow within the banks of Scripture.” These study’s will help you know those banks, better enabling you to “walk in the Spirit.”
Second, if you have not already encountered the person of the Spirit through conversion, baptism in the Spirit, exercise of spiritual gifts and fruit then oppurtunity will be made for prayer every week???

Sola Scriptura (Scripture alone)

The Reformation watchword of sola Scriptura (Scripture alone) is a good foundation all we endeavour to do as a church is based on Gods word
Anthony D. Palma, The Holy Spirit: A Pentecostal Perspective (Springfield, MO: Logion Press; Gospel Publishing House, 2001), 15.
We are living in an age when the Holy Spirit is the active Agent of the Triune God. We ought to know Him in His real nature, in His attributes, in His names, and in His ministries. All matters and questions pertaining to the doctrine of the Holy Spirit, therefore, should be of unusual interest to us who live in this period of special spiritual privilege.
It is vitally important that we know the Holy Spirit not as an impersonal force, but as a divine Person—the third Person of the Trinity. He possesses the attributes of deity, so is properly designated God, the Spirit. He is presented in Scripture under various names and symbols.
Study Objective over the coming weeks
To recognise the nature and character of the Holy Spirit, and seek His fullness in our lives.
Frank M. Boyd, Baptized in the Spirit, ed. Clancy Hayes and Gary Leggett, Spiritual Discovery Series (Springfield, MO: Radiant Life, 1996), 9.
We are back on the bus again and the passenger that we need more then ever is the Holy Spirit
THE HOLY SPIRIT: OUR GUIDE
The road of life is a complicated journey. There are many choices of ways to go, including wrong turns and dead ends. Sometimes circumstances permit you to back up and try another route if a mistake is made. But often when a decision is made to travel a particular path, there can be no turning back. Jesus has promised us the Holy Spirit to guide us through life. He knows the way to go and we can trust our lives in His hands. The following maze illustrates how difficult life can be without the help of the Holy Spirit to lead us on our way. Attempt to go from the top left-hand corner to the bottom right-hand corner in just 30 seconds.
Frank M. Boyd, Baptized in the Spirit, ed. Clancy Hayes and Gary Leggett, Spiritual Discovery Series (Springfield, MO: Radiant Life, 1996), 92.
Now try this maze again, this time following the route of the numbers in order, 1 through 6. This direction makes this difficult maze easy to complete. The Holy Spirit desires to give us the same kind of direction and guidance for our lives, and we need it. Seek Him today and earnestly desire His powerful presence in your life. Basically the Holy Spirit is our SatNav Gods Word lights up the way the Holy Spirt gives us the direction subtle pointers we need
Frank M. Boyd, Baptized in the Spirit, ed. Clancy Hayes and Gary Leggett, Spiritual Discovery Series (Springfield, MO: Radiant Life, 1996), 93.
Use the maze as an example

The importance of knowing the Holy Spirit

Romans 8:14 ESV
For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.
as a young teenager our Sunday school teacher took us to Sheffield Bramall lane to listen to Billy Graham 1985 etc I remember been in Leeds town hall at a graham kendrick event called fanning the flames it was 1986/87 I believe i vividly remember wanting God to reveal himself to me id read the bible and read the events in Acts; but nothing happened at that instance apart from a increasing desire to not just know about God but to experience him on a deeper level we know about a lot of people in the news ie Kier Stammer the prime Minister or King Charles we know about them lots of things but we dont know them, easter 1987 baptised in the holy spirit at Spring Harvest It is exceedingly important that Christians know who the Holy Spirit is and understand something of the vital role He plays in their lives.
We ought to know Him in His real nature, in His attributes, in His names, and in His ministries. All matters and questions pertaining to the doctrine of the Holy Spirit, therefore, should be of unusual interest to us who live in this period of special spiritual privilege.

Who is The Holy Spirit ?

The Holy Spirit is a fully and completely divine person who possesses all of the divine attributes. God the Spirit applies the work of God the Son. The Spirit’s distinct role is to accomplish the unified will of the Father and the Son and to be in personal relationship with both of them.
Crossway Bibles, The ESV Study Bible (Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles, 2008), 2520.

1. He is a spirit

Read
John 3:8 ESV
The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”
a)A spirit is a being without a physical body.
b)The Hebrew word for spirit is "ruach" which means wind.
The Greek word for spirit is "pneuma" which also means wind.

2. He is a Person

Read John 14:16-17
John 14:16–17 (ESV)
And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.
The personal nature of the Holy Spirit is evident in his title “Comforter” or “Helper” (Gk. Paraklētos)
a)Jesus had no doubts that the Holy Spirit is a person and not just a powerful influence. He always used the personal pronouns ("He”, “His”, “Himself") when talking about the Holy Spirit:
b)The Holy Spirit also has the three characteristics of a personality/intellect, emotions and will.3.

(1) Intellect

1 Corinthians 2:10–11 ESV
these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God. For who knows a person’s thoughts except the spirit of that person, which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.
He understands and thinks.
John 14:26 ESV
But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.
He teaches.

(2)Emotions

He can be grieved.
Ephesians 4:30 ESV
And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
He can be insulted.
Hebrews 10:29 ESV
How much worse punishment, do you think, will be deserved by the one who has trampled underfoot the Son of God, and has profaned the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has outraged the Spirit of grace?
He can love.
Romans 15:30 ESV
I appeal to you, brothers, by our Lord Jesus Christ and by the love of the Spirit, to strive together with me in your prayers to God on my behalf,
He can be lied to.
Acts 5:3 ESV
But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and to keep back for yourself part of the proceeds of the land?

(3)Will

He gives as He determines.
1 Corinthians 12:11 NLT
It is the one and only Spirit who distributes all these gifts. He alone decides which gift each person should have.
He forbids.
Acts 16:6 NKJV
Now when they had gone through Phrygia and the region of Galatia, they were forbidden by the Holy Spirit to preach the word in Asia.
He commands.
Acts 13:2 NKJV
As they ministered to the Lord and fasted, the Holy Spirit said, “Now separate to Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.”
That the Holy Spirit is a person is beyond doubt. He is a mighty unlimited person without a physical body but what kind of person is He?
He is God and God is triune
Right throughout the Bible we have the concept of a triune God. God is one, but consists of three persons; Father, Son and Holy Spirit
1 John 5:6–7 NKJV
This is He who came by water and blood—Jesus Christ; not only by water, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit who bears witness, because the Spirit is truth. For there are three that bear witness in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit; and these three are one.
Other scriptural support for the divinity of the Holy Spirit.
The ESV Study Bible The Deity of the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit possesses all the divine attributes, as shown in the following scriptures. When the Holy Spirit works, it is God who is working.

1)He is eternal.
Hebrews 9:14
Hebrews 9:14 ESV
how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God.
(2)He is absolutely holy.
Romans 1:4
Romans 1:4 ESV
and was declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord,
(3)He is present everywhere.
Psalm 139:7-12
Psalm 139:7–12 ESV
Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence? If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there! If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me. If I say, “Surely the darkness shall cover me, and the light about me be night,” even the darkness is not dark to you; the night is bright as the day, for darkness is as light with you.
(4)He is all-knowing.
1 Corinthians 2:10-11
1 Corinthians 2:10–11 ESV
these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God. For who knows a person’s thoughts except the spirit of that person, which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.
(5)He is all-powerful.
Ephesians 1:19
Ephesians 1:19 ESV
and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might

What is the Holy Spirit like?

1.He is the Spirit of grace.
2.He is the Spirit of faith.
3.He is the Spirit of truth.
4.He is the Spirit of wisdom and revelation.
5.He is the Spirit of power and love.
Acts 1:8 NKJV
But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

What is the Holy Spirit likened to?
