Welcome back - hope everyone had a good week.
We are continuing our journey through the names of God.
The foundation of our faith life is
Know God - Make Him Know
The more we know God , the more we will want to make him known
Last week we saw 3 names most commonly used for God
Elohim / Yahweh (Jehovah) / Adonai
Last week looked at God naming and describing Himself as Yahweh / Jehovah
Before God revealed himself this way He revealed his character through creation his interactions with it
1 In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.
Elohim - the creator God
For the next few weeks I want to look at many of these interactions
But before we do that I have a question.
Anyone play hide and seek when young?
What is the point of the game?
My story....
One of the fundamental needs of humans is to be seen and heard
We have a need for connection - this is the issue with social media.
Psychologist confirm feeling seen is pivotal for mental and emotional health.
What would it mean then if I told you God sees you?
That’s what I want to talk about today.
Let’s pray.
To Be Seen
The story of Abraham - God promised an heir
1 Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, had borne him no children. She had a female Egyptian servant whose name was Hagar. 2 And Sarai said to Abram, “Behold now, the Lord has prevented me from bearing children. Go in to my servant; it may be that I shall obtain children by her.” And Abram listened to the voice of Sarai. 3 So, after Abram had lived ten years in the land of Canaan, Sarai, Abram’s wife, took Hagar the Egyptian, her servant, and gave her to Abram her husband as a wife. 4 And he went in to Hagar, and she conceived. And when she saw that she had conceived, she looked with contempt on her mistress.
Circumventing and manipulating God’s timing
It doesn’t help the Hagar probably was throwing it in Sarah's face
5 And Sarai said to Abram, “May the wrong done to me be on you! I gave my servant to your embrace, and when she saw that she had conceived, she looked on me with contempt. May the Lord judge between you and me!” 6 But Abram said to Sarai, “Behold, your servant is in your power; do to her as you please.” Then Sarai dealt harshly with her, and she fled from her.
Hagar runs, but God finds her
7 The angel of the Lord found her by a spring of water in the wilderness, the spring on the way to Shur. 8 And he said, “Hagar, servant of Sarai, where have you come from and where are you going?” She said, “I am fleeing from my mistress Sarai.” 9 The angel of the Lord said to her, “Return to your mistress and submit to her.” 10 The angel of the Lord also said to her, “I will surely multiply your offspring so that they cannot be numbered for multitude.”
Hagar - and Egyptian pagan comes face to face the God
13 So she called the name of the Lord who spoke to her, “You are a God of seeing,” for she said, “Truly here I have seen him who looks after me.”
El Roi - the God who sees
How does that make you feel?
God Sees Us
So what does that mean
God knows all about us
1 O Lord, you have searched me and known me! 2 You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar.
God knows where we are going and have been
3 You search out my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways.
God knows where we are
7 Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence?
We are seen.
We are known.
We are loved.
17 How precious to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them! 18 If I would count them, they are more than the sand. I awake, and I am still with you.
Any thoughts or questions?
To Be Seen
To Be Seen
There is no where we can go that God does not see us
There is nothing we do He doesn't know about.
Scary, but also comforting
To know He is ever present in my distress and joy
18 Behold, the eye of the Lord is on those who fear him, on those who hope in his steadfast love, 19 that he may deliver their soul from death and keep them alive in famine.
He is not absent
He is not distant
He is the God who sees me
Next week - The God Most High - Gen 14: 17-20
Let’s pray
