5258 What Could Remove Her Sin?

At a great parliament of religions, held at Chicago many years ago, practically every known religion was represented, and many were the learned discourses delivered.

During one session, Dr. Joseph Cook, of Boston, suddenly rose and said: “Gentlemen, I beg to introduce to you a woman with a great sorrow. Blood stains are on her hands, and nothing she has tried will remove them. The blood is that of murder, and nothing will take away the stain. She has been driven to desperation in her distress. Is there anything in your religion that will remove her sin and give her peace?” A hush fell upon the gathering as the speaker turned from one to another for an answer. Not one of the company replied.

Raising his eyes heavenwards, Dr. Cook then cried out, “I will ask another question. John, can you tell this woman how to get rid of her awful sin?” The great preacher awaited, as if listening for a reply. Suddenly he cried, “Listen, John speaks: “The blood of Jesus Christ, His Son cleanseth us from all sin.” (

The Testimony of Three

Believers are Born Again through the testimony of the three which begs the question, What have you done with Jesus or another way to say it is Are you Born Again?
Once again we have John driving home the truth concerning Christ to correct the Heresies of the day.
Gnostics had the idea when the Holy Spirit came on Jesus at His Baptism this was not the Holy Spirit by the Christ and up to this point Jesus was just a regular man.
And On the Cross when He says, “My God, My God, Why have You forsaken Me” This is when the Christ spirit left Jesus so the man would suffer alone.
So Accordingly the Gnostics taught that Christ was only present at the water but did not suffer through the Blood.
This would mean Christ didn’t die for our sins; however, John assures his believers that Jesus was fully man and fully God and came through both the water and the blood.
Verses 5-8 John is moving from who is Jesus to what are you going to do with Jesus
Keep in mind the NT covenant does not start until after the cross at Pentecost.
This is the completion of the covenant God made with Man in
Jeremiah 31:33 NASB95
“But this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days,” declares the Lord, “I will put My law within them and on their heart I will write it; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.
This was fulfilled at Pentecost bringing in the new covenant which is available through the shed blood of Jesus Christ.
1 John 4:15 NASB95
Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God.
John 6:29 NASB95
Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent.”
Luke 22:70 NASB95
And they all said, “Are You the Son of God, then?” And He said to them, “Yes, I am.”
Verse 6
Some would say we are saved by the waters of Baptism; however, Scripture teaches we are saved by the blood.
Many times referencing
1 Peter 3:21 NASB95
Corresponding to that, baptism now saves you—not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God for a good conscience—through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,
They use this to refer to the
water as baptism and the
blood as the death of Christ saying both are necessary
How ever this would suggest Jesus was saved at His baptism which would be contrary to Scripture.
This is a reference to the water in John 3 or the water of the physical birth as we discussed previously
John 3:5–7 NASB95
Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. “That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. “Do not be amazed that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’
The blood is a reference to the suffering and death of Jesus
So essentially we understand this to mean
Jesus was born of water and through His blood (death) we can be Born Again!
We are made alive because He died on our behalf
1 Corinthians 15:1–4 NASB95
Now I make known to you, brethren, the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received, in which also you stand, by which also you are saved, if you hold fast the word which I preached to you, unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,
1 Corinthians 15:20–22 NASB95
But now Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who are asleep. For since by a man came death, by a man also came the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be made alive.
1 Peter 3:18 NASB95
For Christ also died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, so that He might bring us to God, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit;
Verse 7
There are three that testify is a preface to verse 8
Matthew 18:16 NASB95
“But if he does not listen to you, take one or two more with you, so that by the mouth of two or three witnesses every fact may be confirmed.
Verse 8
What are the three?
The Incarnation (The Water)
The Crucifixion/Resurrection (The Blood)
The Indwelling (The Spirit at Pentecost)
The three agree in who
Jesus is (The Messiah and God the Son)
And what you need to do with Jesus to be saved!
Ephesians 2:8–9 NASB95
For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.
Romans 10:9–10 NASB95
that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.
